Advanced imaging technology uses automated target recognition software that eliminates passenger-specific images and instead auto-detects potential threats by indicating their location on a generic outline of a person.

Security Screening Upgrade
Brisbane Airport is progressively upgrading screening equipment in accordance with an Australian Government directive for all major Australian Airports. These upgrades include the replacement of metal detectors with body scanners and the upgrade of carry-on baggage x-ray screening equipment. From January 2020, when travelling through either of Brisbane Airport’s Terminals, you may be asked to use a body scanner instead of a metal detector when going through the screening process.

Shocking Secrets of Airport X-ray Machines Exposed
While you pass through the metal detector, your carry-on items undergo screening through the X-ray system. A conveyor belt moves each item past an X-ray machine, utilizing electromagnetic waves known as X-rays. These energetic waves can penetrate various materials. Airports commonly use a dual-energy X-ray system, employing a single X-ray source with a range of 140 to 160 kilovolt peak (KVP) for penetration.
In the dual-energy X-ray system, X-rays pass through a detector, a filter, and then another detector. After passing through the item, the X-rays are detected and transmitted to a filter, blocking lower-energy X-rays. The remaining high-energy X-rays reach a second detector. A computer circuit compares the two detector readings, enhancing representation, particularly for low-energy objects like organic materials.
As different materials absorb X-rays at varying levels, the displayed image allows the operator to discern distinct items inside your bag. Items on the monitor are typically color-coded based on the energy range passing through the object, representing three main categories:
Organic
Inorganic
Metal
While color schemes for inorganic and metal may vary among manufacturers, all X-ray systems use shades of orange to represent organic because most explosives fall into this category. Operators are trained to identify not only obvious threats like guns or knives but also anything that could be a component of an improvised explosive device (IED). Since commercially available bombs don't exist, IEDs are the primary means by which terrorists and hijackers attempt to gain control. IEDs can range from basic pipe bombs to sophisticated, electronically-controlled devices.
