Wow, People in Guyana Are Fun! (#104)

For a very long time, I had looked at the map of South America and wondered about those 3 tiny countries at the top -- the countries that no one knew even existed. One of those countries, Guyana, actually had a huge immigrant population in New York, where I'm from. It was the only English speaking country in South America, they said. It was a country of unspoiled natural beauty, they also said. With the world slowly reopening again, I knew I had to go. Guyana is not rich, but with it's recent discovery of oil, that will be changing very soon. But I was there for the people.

If You're Foreign Don't Walk The Streets Here ???????? (#105)

If you're one of the rare souls who decides to take a trip to Guyana, the least visited country in the Americas, chances are your first stop will be Georgetown, the capital city. With a population of only around 200,000, it looks and feels almost like a small town. But this city is no joke. With the newfound oil wealth driving prices up, crime is starting to skyrocket. Although everyone in Guyana suffers from theft, American oil workers and Chinese merchants in particular are hunted in the streets by muggers. I was no oil worker, but I was assumed to be one.

Guyana: South America's Weirdest Country

In this urban adventure, I will travel into Georgetown's Stabroek Market to experience the street culture of this humid city. Although Guyana is on the fringes of the Caribbean region, it is NOT a tourist destination. Instead, Guyana is a minerals, oil and agriculture rich country on the brink of massive development. Before Guyana changes, let us explore this country.

Paramaribo: The Coolest City You've Never Heard Of ???????? (#108)

If you look at a map of South America very carefully, you'll notice a little country called Suriname in the top right corner. They don't speak Spanish there. They surprisingly speak Dutch, along with a ton of other languages. Gone are the Latin influences, instead you find touches of Indonesia, India, China, Holland and West Africa. It's a fascinating place, and I was going to start with the capital, Paramaribo, to get a better understanding of it.

Thankfully, there was plenty of food and Parbo beer waiting for me. But first, I had to learn Dutch - a sentence I never thought would escape my mouth.

Crossing Into Brazil On Foot From Guyana ???????????????? (#113)

BRAZIL! The day had finally come. I had been learning Portuguese here and there for years, but had never made it to the country, until now. But I wasn't going to take the typical tourist route and fly into Rio de Janeiro. Oh no, that's not how I do things.

Instead, being that I was already in the rarely visited country of Guyana, I decided I would go down to their southern border and cross into Brazil that way. There, in the state of Roraima, was a region rarely ever visited by foreigners, but worth the trip. It's mainly the home of different indigenous communities like the Macuxi and Wai Wai, that live on both sides of the border: speaking English on one side, and Portuguese on the other. This is what I live for.

Meeting The African Tribes Who Live in the Amazon (#110)

Deep in the Amazon rainforest of Suriname, which covers almost the entire country, you will find the Maroon tribes, who have been living there for hundreds of years. Their story is a unique one, having escaped slavery and forming new African tribes and societies in the jungle -- the Saramaccans, the Ndyuka, the Matawai. Some of them maintained their Animist religions from their homelands.

On this day, I went with my friend Mr. Mai, who was also the head of the local government, to go and visit these villages up and down the river. You could say I was shocked at what I found.

I've Never Seen A City Like Kampala Before (#47)

You think your city is busy? Uganda laughs at you. Come to Kampala. I was shocked by the level of energy I saw all over the city, even in the middle of the pandemic. I decided to walk from the busy markets of downtown up to the palace of the Kabaka, the king of Buganda. When I arrived there, I had an interesting encounter that I never expected.

She Showed Me Something Inappropriate In Brazil (#117)

Samba. Carnaval. Parades in the street. And that was just the start of my trip. If you ever visit Brazil, you'll end up meeting some of the friendliest people on the planet. You'll be invited to meals and parties, and you'll leave smiling ear to ear. But Brazil can also be unpredictable. For example, I never expected to go looking for a statue of a giant phallus in Recife, but that's exactly what happened. You might also not expect that there's a place in Brazil closer to Africa than it is to Peru, but it's true.

In this video, I went searching for all of these things, with a little help from some new friends.

The Indonesia Hidden In Suriname ???????????????? (#111)

Suriname, a country like no other. In the 1800's, the Dutch were looking for labor to replace the slaves they brought from Africa. This led to a contract program that brought over thousands of Indonesians from the island of Java. These Javanese-Surinamese would go on to have a big impact on the country's culture and food. Being that their arrival in South America was such a unique situation, I wanted to learn a bit more about their history.

I decided to best way to do this was by visiting a fun food market, and then an abandoned plantation where a bloody uprising had occurred. A typical Sunday afternoon, you could say.

There Are Bad People Here. Very Bad People ???????? (#100)

In the past few decades, one city in Argentina has begun to develop a rather unsavory reputation for criminality. Rosario, which connects the north of Argentina to Buenos Aires through the Parana River, is actually a fairly beautiful city. But as with many places, there are two different sides to it. On the outskirts was a very different city, and on this day I would go to see what was there.

It's Dangerous Outside, Come In My House! ???????? (#116)

I had come to Salvador in Northeast Brazil, a famous yet often overlooked part of the country. My plan was simple: I would rent a car and drive through the region, getting to know the real Brazil along the way. But before that, I had to explore Salvador, a city with an unfortunate reputation of being the most dangerous in the country.

What I found in the favelas that day shocked me, but not in the way I expected..

I Met The Family of Nazis Who Fled to Argentina (#99)

Far from the bustling capital of Buenos Aires in Argentina lies Bariloche, a scenic resort town that feels like it was pulled right out of the Swiss Alps, or maybe Austria. German settlers arrived here in large numbers in the early 1900’s, and they were later followed by a more questionable group of immigrants - Nazis fleeing prosecution after World War 2. All of the most prominent Nazi commanders and scientists came here, some if only for a brief period. There was even a conspiracy that Hitler himself escaped here.

I decided I would have to look into this a bit more -- and I was quite surprised by what I found.

Stopped By The Ugandan Military! (#50)

In western Uganda, along the border with Congo, lies the Rwenzori Mountains, and I was excited to go see what was over there. We took a “taxi”, also known as a bus in Uganda, to the outskirts of the mountain, where languages I had never heard of before like Amba and Teso were spoken. But before the fun could begin, the Ugandan military had some words for us…in Swahili?

I Can Have 2 Wives in Guyana? Welcome to South America

In this video, we will take a deep dive back into the streets of Georgetown, Guyana. Although Guyana is on the northern coast of South America, its culture and feel is that of a Caribbean island. Unlike its Caribbean neighbors, Guyana's growing economy will allow for it to grow far beyond its colonial outline. Guyana's diversity and rich history makes it the most unique country in the region.
Let's go enjoy Guyana!

She Took Me Driving Across Mexico (#10)

It was time for more driving in Mexico. But this time, I had a teacher. We would journey from Ajijic to Guanajuato, avoiding the pinches pendejos along the way, and while also picking up some harmless refreshments. Which, naturally, had to be consumed while we were driving.
