ULTIMATE GUIDE TO TALLINN OLD TOWN - TOURIST HIGHLIGHTS, AERIAL VIEWS, BEST PLACES TO EAT & DRINK

In this vlog we take you on a tour of the famous Medieval Tallinn Old Town which is a UNESCO World heritage site and one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe! If you missed part 1 of the tour you can check it out here:

Part 2 of our tour of Tallinn Old Town begins in the lower part of the old town in Lai, as we walk through the passage of history and into the main Town Hall Square to look around what used to be the central hub and market place of this old Hanseatic town back in the middle ages.

We climb to the top of the Town Hall Tower which was only 4€ per person for entry and 115 steps high, but these are some seriously steep steps, there a rope/bannister to help pull you up a bit.

For lunch we head to the very well known Olde Hansa restaurant which is an authentic medieval restaurant with it’s own medieval shoppe attached.

After lunch we head back across the Old Town Square (Raekoja plats) to check out the oldest pharmacy in Europe (Raeapteek) which has continuously operated in the same premises with records dating back to 1422 and is still operating as a modern pharmacy today.

Turning left out of the pharmacy we head out of town hall square and walk along Vene to St. Nicholas’ Orthodox Church and then onto St. Peter & St. Paul’s Cathedral which has a beautiful courtyard garden with a quaint seating area for lunch, coffee and snacks. Along Vene you’ll find St. Catherine’s passage (Kateriina Käik - Kateriina lane) You can stroll straight through from Vene street to Müürivahe and past the very well preserved tomb stones exhibited on the south wall of the church which date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

We then exit St. Catherines passage onto Müürivahe where we are met with the imposing Town Wall Walkway and Hellemann Tower. Turning left at the end of the Old town wall brings you onto Viru Tänav and directly in front of Viru Gate (Viru Väravad) - one of the last original gates to Tallinn old Town and a stunning entrance to it, the flower market!

We head straight back into the old town through Viru gate along Viru Tänav which is full of shops and restaurants and even has a museum with medieval torture instruments - Keskaegsete Piinariistade näitus which costs 8€ for entry and has over 50 exhibits.

We go past Sõprus cinema on our way over to Freedom square - get a little distracted by a super cute doggie who was cooling off in the water fountain and just wanted to play! :) We also stumble across Gloria restaurant which is tucked inside a wine cellar and is jam packed full of wines!

We finally get to Freedom square (Vabaduse Väljak) which is a modern and vast square with cafes and museums including the People’s Front Museum. Here you can’t miss the War of Independence Victory column which is a glass pillar and cross erected in 2009 to memorialise Estonia’s 1918-1920 War of Independence. The bright yellow church on the opposite side of Freedom square is St. John’s Church a 19th Century Lutheran church built in a neo-Gothic style.

We make our way along Niguliste to see St. Nicholas’ Church and Museum which was restored after WWII bombing and now houses the largest and most valuable ecclesiastical art collection in Estonia. We make our way up the steps of Lühike Jalg (little leg) back into the upper old town on the Toompea Hill and into the Danish Kings garden - birthplace of the Danish Flag (with an abstract sculpture of the Danish flag in front). Here you’ll be met by the three monks; Ambrosias, Bartholomeus and Claudius.

The other side of the Danish Kings Garden we finish our tour at the entrance to the Kiek in De Kök museum and Bastion tunnels.

Also check out the guided tour we took around Tallinn old Town:

Built up from the 13th to 16th centuries, when Tallinn was a thriving member of the Hanseatic trade league, this enclosed neighbourhood of colourful, gabled houses, half-hidden courtyards and grandiose churches is, quite rightly, the city's biggest tourist draw.
It’s small, compact, and very easily explored on foot.
Tallinn’s Old Town is divided into two areas – the lower town and the upper town.
Those two towns were once separated by gates, almost like two different cities.
Nowadays, the combination of the upper town on the high limestone hill and the lower town at its foot form an expressive skyline that is visible from a great distance both from land and sea.
The lower town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Probably the biggest tourist attraction here, in the heart of Old Town, is Town Hall Square with the Town Hall and its tower.
There has been a Town Hall in Tallinn since at least 1322 and a town square next to it ever since.
On Town Hall Square you will also find the Europe’s oldest continuously-operating pharmacy.
Today it operates as a museum and modern pharmacy.
Major sights of the lower town also include the city wall and its towers.
Originally the almost 4 km-long limestone wall came with 8 gates and 46 towers, today about half of the wall and towers are still standing.
Some of the towers are open to the public, offering a chance to climb up, and possibly even visit a museum inside!
Visitors who are not afraid of heights may go and walk on the town wall and admire the view from the top.
Besides the towers, Tallinn has more than 20 churches, most of them situated in the Old Town.
Be sure to visit Tallinn’s spectacular medieval churches like St. Olav’s, St. Nicholas’, and the Holy Spirit Church, as those are truly magnificent pieces of architecture.
The upper town, Toompea, has always been the seat of power.
The major attractions here are the viewing platforms, Toompea Castle (housing the Estonian Parliament, the Riigikogu), and two churches – St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin, more commonly called Dome Church (Toomkirik in Estonian).

The number one site to enjoy in Tallinn is the Town Hall square, where the market has always been located, and it is still the busiest place in town. Surrounded by some of the finest architecture, housing shops and outdoor restaurants and beer halls and the great collection of market kiosks in the center of the square.
The excellent preservation of this medieval architecture is a result of three major factors: during the 13th and 14th centuries it became a very important trading center part of the Huns the Arctic league and therefore these buildings were constructed and built up in a grand style befitting the wealth of this community.
But after a few hundred years of trade and expansion the prosperity tapered off the trade moved to other places and Tallinn was sort of left behind in the wake of history.
In the 20th century it was occupied by Russia and was left alone because there was no money to pay for any modern development creating this unique situation of a well-preserved ensemble with medieval and Renaissance buildings in this extremely beautiful setting.
Tallinn has a few gentle hills, creating an interesting topography where you get some intersections of streets going high and low. One of the first of the impressive historic sites you come upon on Pikk Street is three connected houses called The Three Sisters. These are typical examples of what the dwellings of wealthy merchants would look like in the Middle Ages.
Tallinn has always depended on merchants for its prosperity, and in this street we find many of the guild houses. They were the headquarters of the various merchant organizations.
This elaborate facade and beautiful doorway leads to one of the most interesting of the guild houses. We're in the house of the Brotherhood of Blackheads, and you see here a gothic guild hall. This would have been the principal meeting room inside the Guild Hall.
St Olav's Church is claimed to have been the highest church in Europe, and there are some who claim it was the world's tallest building in the late 16th century. They say its height was 200 meters, but lightning has struck at numerous times and the height's been reduced now to 125 meters.
Wander through the nearby little lanes, and you will soon come upon a section of the wall that you can actually walk on for free.
The oldest sections of Tallinn's city wall were built in the 13th-century. During the next 300 years, it became one of the largest and strongest defense systems in all of northern Europe. More than half of the magnificent defense system has been preserved, which includes nearly two kilometers of the wall, 26 defensive towers and two major gates. It would be very easy to miss this wall-climbing adventure, so be sure to look for it.
One way to reach the Upper Town is walking through that fortified gateway that was part of the barrier between the upper and lower towns, on an extension of Long Leg street, the main street of town.
There are a couple of lookout points up here where you get splendid views looking down at the Lower Town, especially at the city wall, and the watchtowers, and the clay tile roofs of the old buildings. There are 26 of these medieval towers still standing.
When finished with the Upper Town, it's quite easy to get back to the Lower Town. It's all downhill, perhaps returning the same way you came up along the Long Leg street where you're going to find more of those paintings and crafts on display.
Katerina Käik, or St Catherine's Lane, is one of the nicest streets in town because it's a quiet respite with this ancient architecture. And it's lined with open studios that function as everyday work rooms for the artists.
The Great Guild was the most important of the merchant societies, and the impressive Gothic headquarters was converted into the Estonian History Museum with a fascinating collection.
The main building on the town hall square is the city hall itself. It's the best-preserved town hall in the Baltic and Scandinavian states, dating back to 1402. The Town Hall has a small museum inside with costume attendants to explain the history. The magnificent building celebrated recently its 700th anniversary.

SECRETS OF TALLINN - Our Favourite Places Outside of The Old Town! TELLISKIVI, ROTERMANN & KALAMAJA!

In this video we take you on a tour of our top places of Tallinn outside of the Old Town. We start by heading over to Rotermann City within the Rotermann quarter, which until just a few years ago, was just a factory area between Old Town and the Passenger Port and was little more than a collection of dilapidated buildings, discarded leftovers of late 19th and early 20th-century industry. Now the area has been magnificently-restored and serves as home to a number of shops and restaurants, as well as an active cultural scene. The quarter's main square is often used for festivals and outdoor performances.

After eating lunch in Rotermann city we then make our way over to the Kalamaja district with our first stop being the Linnahall which upon initial sight doesn’t look very aesthetically pleasing but what lies beneath it is a huge amphitheatre designed to hold 4500 people. It was originally named the V. I. Lenin Palace of Culture and Sport, and was built by the Soviets for the Moscow 1980 Summer Olympics when the sailing events were hosted in Estonia. Now it is a vast, dilapidated building that although is in need of some serious renovation is still nonetheless fascinating to see up close and offers stunning views over the bay of Tallinn once you reach the top.

From the Linnahall we continue walking through Kalamaja along the bay and over to Patarei prison which was originally built in 1828 as a sea fortress and later turned into a prison where crimes of Communism and Nazism took place between 1940-1991. For 8€ you can visit the exhibition, ‘Communism is Prison’ in the eastern wing of the prison, where you can see the original interior and prison yard.

From there we take a quick look at the historical Seaplane harbour museum which is 15€ per adult and looks fascinating. We also take a walk around Suur Tõll, the largest preserved pre-war icebreaker in the world. Suur Tõll has had a colourful past of ownership between the Russian Empire (1914-1917), The Soviet Union (1917-1918), Finland (1918-1922), Estonia (1922-1940), Soviet Union again (1940-1988), before finally being sold back to Estonia in 1988.

After following the arrows which take you on a full tour of Suur Tõll we head over to Port Noblessener which is a newly and very artistically renovated port area with beautiful apartment blocks, filled with restaurants and great places to sit back and have a drink watching the sun over the bay of Tallinn.

Then we walk through Kalamaja Cemetery Park which links Port Noblessner to the leafy green residential area of Kalamaja and onto our final stop: Telliskivi Creative City which since 2007 has developed from old soviet factories into a vibrant, artist-friendly complex that has spaces for businesses, restaurants, shops and organising events. It is located between the city centre and Kalamaja and Pelgulinn districts in North Tallinn. It is currently Estonia's biggest creative economy enterprise centre bringing together a variety of activities - acting as a community platform for the creatives.

We both love Telliskivi and have spent most of our time in Tallinn living in an apartment building right opposite Depoo which is an area in Telliskivi where old shipping containers and an old train have all been converted into different restaurants with foods from around the world, it’s a really cool place to visit and we walk through it to get to the famous Balti Jaama Turg (Baltic Station Market) which is a place worth visiting in itself!

Tallinn Estonia - Must Visit Attractions & Best Things To Do

The breathtaking capital of Estonia — Tallinn — is possibly one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Europe. The encompassing medieval stone walls, sky-scraping church bell towers, and winding cobblestone streets opening into squares and courtyards will certainly cause visitors’ jaws to drop in awe. Continue reading to learn the top sights to enjoy during an escape to Tallinn.

Viru Gates
Enter Tallinn’s marvelous old town through Viru Gate, which was part of the city’s 14th-century extensive defense system. Though a portion of the Viru Gate was demolished to allow for horse-drawn traffic, the towers of the gate remain. The area around Viru Gate is now home to market stalls selling woolen mittens, sweet smelling roasted nuts, and numerous restaurants.

Old Town
The Old Town has to be the top draw for visitors to Tallinn. Featuring beautiful architecture and locals dressed in medieval clothing, the Old Town somehow escapes feeling overly touristy or kitschy that other cities with costumed workers might experience.

Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform
For the best view of Tallinn, and to take your own stunning photo for Instagram (don’t forget to add the hashtag #visitestonia), head to the Kohtuotsa viewing platform. Located on Toompea Hill, visitors will be treated to unobstructed views of the harbor, bell towers, and the terra-cotta colored roof tiles. This is also a popular spot for local musicians to hang out, providing some background music to the view.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Also located on Toompea Hill, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is relatively recent addition to the medieval old town — it was completed only in 1900. This Russian Orthodox church has distinct, black onion domes that can be easily spotted towering above Tallinn. The interior of the church can be visited, although visitors should first check service times and be respectful of private services as this is an active church. Visiting the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is free of charge.

St. Olaf’s Church
St. Olaf’s Church is one of the most important structures in Tallinn, and is the city’s largest medieval building. This well-preserved church was likely built in the 1200s and is notable due to its high church tower that has been struck by lightening numerous times throughout its history. St. Olaf’s Church is not open for visitors during the winter (open from April until October) and is free of charge. Visitors can climb the narrow stairs to the top of the church for a beautiful view over Tallinn’s Old Town.

Town Hall Square
Stunning in every season, but particularly during the annual Christmas market, Town Hall Square has been the heart of Tallinn since the 13th century. Though no longer acting as the city’s marketplace, the Town Hall Square sees bustling activity with café chairs and tables spilling into the square in the summer, numerous tour groups, and occasional festivals. The surrounding architecture is also stunning; keep an eye out for dragons on the Town Hall!

Eating out
Boasting some of the best restaurants in the three Baltic states, eating out is certainly one of the best activities offered in Tallinn. Visitors can indulge in anything from traditional Estonian cuisine to Indian or medieval fare. Some of our top restaurant suggestions include Ribe, Rataskaevu 16, and Olde Hansa.

Free Walking Tour
The Free Walking Tours by Traveller are the best way to learn about Tallinn’s best sights, get local insight, and uncover Old Town’s myths. Friendly guides provide excellent tips for where to eat cheap and must-sees, all while learning about the history of some of Tallinn’s top sights. Free Walking Tours take place every day at 12 pm and last for approximately two hours.

Promenade along the Tallinn Town Wall
Visitors can climb a portion of Tallinn’s wall to explore the towers and enjoy beautiful city views. The wall was formerly 2.4-km long and had 46 towers; while not as magnificent as it once was, it still is impressive at approximately 1.9-km long with around 20 towers remaining. It really is a privilege to walk these ancient defensive walls. Opening hours for the Tallinn Town Wall vary depending on the season.

Toompea Castle
Located next to Alexander Nevsky Church, the present Toompea Castle was built in the late 1700s. This understated castle features a salmon pink exterior, white details, and the national flag and crest. The castle can be visited on weekdays, but visitors must book ahead of time. A large park can be found next to Toompea Castle, providing visitors with a bit of a green reprieve from city life.

Tallinn (/tʌlˈɪn, tæˈlɪn/) is the capital and most populous city of Estonia. Situated on a bay in north Estonia, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn has a population of about 454,000 (as of 2023) and administratively lies in the Harju maakond (county). Tallinn is the main financial, industrial, and cultural centre of Estonia. It is located 187 km (116 mi) northwest of the country's second largest city Tartu, however only 80 km (50 mi) south of Helsinki, Finland, also 320 km (200 mi) west of Saint Petersburg, Russia, 300 km (190 mi) north of Riga, Latvia, and 380 km (240 mi) east of Stockholm, Sweden. From the 13th century until the first half of the 20th century, Tallinn was known in most of the world by variants of its other historical name Reval.

Tallinn received Lübeck city rights in 1248, however the earliest evidence of human population in the area dates back nearly 5,000 years. The medieval indigenous population of what is now Tallinn and northern Estonia was one of the last pagan civilisations in Europe to adopt Christianity following the Papal-sanctioned Livonian Crusade in the 13th century. The first recorded claim over the place was laid by Denmark after a successful raid in 1219 led by King Valdemar II, followed by a period of alternating Scandinavian and Teutonic rulers. Due to the strategic location by the sea, its medieval port became a significant trade hub, especially in the 14–16th centuries, when Tallinn grew in importance as the northernmost member city of the Hanseatic League. Tallinn Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tallinn has the highest number of startup companies per person among all capitals and larger cities in Europe and is the birthplace of many international high-technology companies, including Skype, Wise and Bolt. The city is home to the headquarters of the European Union's IT agency, and to the NATO Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence. In 2007, Tallinn was listed among the top-10 digital cities in the world, and in 2022, Tallinn was listed among the top-10 medium-sized European cities of the future.

Historic Centre of Tallinn - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Historic Centre of Tallinn is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city itself is split into two parts: the Toompea Fortress, home to the government of the day, and the Lower Town, where the houses, shops, and harbour are located. Tallinn has historically been one of the most important trading cities on the Baltic Sea, and has a fantastic legacy of interesting stuff to see. Let's check it out!
