I’ve wanted to get tattooed by the world's oldest tattoo artist since I was 13 years old. I saw a documentary about her on an episode of Tattoo Hunter, the series which inspired me to get tattoos. Never did I dream then that Whang Od, the Philippine’s last Kalinga, would still be tattooing today and that I’d get the chance to meet her. She’s 105 years old and still going strong. Must be something in the rice! We flew 6,666 miles from the UK to the Philippines for this tattoo and I’m excited to share the journey with you. Because it was one hell of a journey to get there…

We are so much fortunate to meet legendary one of the oldest 107 y.o. Tattoo Artist in the world - Apo Whang Od deep in the mountains, in the village Buscalan. The trip from Manila to Buscalan took us 10 hours by mountain serpentine road, but it is worth it.

Buscalan: We visit the oldest Tattoo artist in the World | Real Filipino traditions and hiking

Buscalan is a place, a small village in the middle of the northern mountains of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines. And an absolute must for any tourist who wants to experience the cultures as they existed in the Philippines before colonisation. The tradition of tattooing only survived because the villages in the mountains are so hard to reach. And the Spaniards just left the people there alone. Those traditions are more than 1000 years old, and the methods for the Tattoos too (just the paint is new). Apo, one of the eldest in the village, has brought this tradition back to life and passed it on to her children. She is said to be over 100 years old (surely the oldest tattooing in the world) and you can still meet her. She does three (3) dots as a tattoo because she is old. And she is a National Cultural Treasure (National Treasurer). Because she has preserved the heritage of this region. Now the intricate tattoos and the ancient script of the Philippines are done by younger tattooists, but with the same style and white. With a pomelo thorn that is repeatedly pricked into the skin with a small bamboo hammer, the paint is apülied under the skin.
The length of the village in the middle of the mountains, with a few rice fields (rice terraces) and many wooden houses, is also interesting. It is also pleasantly cool and not as hot as in other regions of the Philippines. You can also go hiking here. And is perfect to sleep outside.
The people in the village are also really lovely and take care of the tourists in their own houses (homestay). Of course, this is also lucrative, but not yet too commercialised. So you can really get to know Filipino culture, which is not completely westernised like all the rest.
So we can only recommend it.

BUSCALAN: Home of the Oldest Tattoo Artist | Apo Whang Od

This December my friends, a handful of volunteers, and I took on the 15 hour journey up the mountains to Buscalan Village, home of the oldest tattoo artist in the world and last living mambabatok — Apo Whang Od

We were welcomed with open arms and were able to distribute our donations to the children of the village. Apart from that, we met with several local tattoo artists knowledgeable in the art of Batok—their traditional tattooing technique (almost 1,000 years old!)

Our weekend up north was filled with so many highlights that I just hope I was able to capture and give this amazing province justice through this video.
