Sailing Bahamas, Sailing Eleuthera - Nassau to Dunmore Town - HR54 Cloudy Bay - Jan'20. S20 Ep1

Exciting times: narrow shallow entrance at night, depth challenges getting into Spanish Wells, piloted through infamous Devils Backbone passage. And enjoyable times exploring Dunmore Town on Harbour Island and Spanish Wells.

Our late decision to depart Nassau for Eleuthera meant we had a nervous entry into the very narrow and shallow channel of Royal Island Harbour, at low tide, in the dark and no leading lights! Once in, we hid from the next strong weather system for 2 days before heading the short but challenging distance to Spanish Wells. We literally bumped our way there, over the shallows!
Rather than stopping in Spanish Wells we took the tide and weather window to continue onto Dunmore Town on Harbour Island, hiring the piloting services of Bruno to guide us through the very tricky Devils Backbone Passage.
We enjoyed the delights of Dunmore Town and its fantastic beach for almost a week, while again hiding from another weather system. We nervously completed the passage back to Spanish Wells without a pilot, simply following our outward track on the plotter.
Spanish Wells was a very pleasant surprise. We really enjoyed this small but prosperous little fishing community and its uniquely friendly people, before again heading south to cruise Eleuthera Peninsula. 4-14 Jan 2020

Sailing Bahamas, Spanish Wells to Cape Eleuthera - Hallberg Rassy 54 Cloudy Bay - Jan'20. S20 Ep2

Sailing Eleuthera. Passing Current Cut. Boat engine maintenance in Cape Eleuthera Marina.

From the unique Spanish Wells we motored through the famous Current Cut, with its extreme tidal current, onto the bank on the west side of Eleuthera peninsula. Over the next few days, we hopped all the way down the west side of the peninsula, anchored in several interesting bays in the wonderful sheltered lee of the north-south elongated peninsula.
Then we again had to run for cover. We found shelter in the rather expensive Cape Eleuthera Marina where we stayed two days and serviced Volvo, ran an anticalc raw water engine flush, repaired the mainsail, did the laundry and gave Cloudy Bay a clean and polish. Busy but productive days.
Then finally headed to our original Bahamas destination, the Exuma Islands. 14-19 Jan 2020

Sailing Bahamas, Sailing Exuma - O'Brien's Cay & Cambridge Cay - HR54 Cloudy Bay - Jan'20. S20 Ep4

In Exuma Land and Sea National Park. Johnny Depp's island. Snokel over tha Aquarium and a crashed drugs plane. Testing the hookha diving system. Encounters with wildlife.

From the beautiful Warderick Wells moorings we have an upwind sail on the Exuma bank then wiggle our way through channels and shoals to anchor in the shelter of O’Brien’s Cay. Here we snorkel over The Aquarium, view a crashed drugs plane and dinghy around Johnny Depp’s island.
We then move to Cambridge Cay park moorings. Here we again explore the exquisite surroundings by dinghy: walking on an exposed sand bar, having encounters with wildlife (rays, snakes, sharks) and strolling on picture perfect and deserted beaches.
We also try out our new Hookha airline dive system to repair the rudder and experiment with the GoPro bubble that can focus the camera both above and below the water at the same time. 24-28 Jan 2020

British Virgin Islands Sailing - Virgin Gorda, January 2020

It was Tuesday, January 21, 2020. We were glad looking back that we were able to go on this trip before COVID-19 screwed up everyone's sailing plans.

We left our mooring on Cooper Island and headed east towards Virgin Gorda. That is a common route in the BVI because most of the islands lay upwind of Tortola. You will spend the week motoring or sailing upwind to get to the next island.

We dropped our mooring at Cooper Island and planned to head to the Baths and spend the morning hiking around this amazing BVI National Park. We had a great hike and swim and then headed up to the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. We picked up a mooring ball at the Leverick Bay Marina and resort for the night.

We arrived on a Tuesday which meant that the Micheal Beans Pirate Show was starting about Happy hour. I called ahead a got us a reservation right down in front. We all dressed up in our best pirate attire and headed in for one of our best nights of the trip. So proud of this crew for letting their hair down a bit and having a little fun. We were all getting to know each other a little better and I was feeling very lucky to be sailing with this amazing group.

The next morning we stopped at the fuel dock and took on some water and ice before heading 15 miles North to Anegada.

Our final days in the Atlantic - Sailing Tarka Ep. 42

Proceeds from this video will be donated to the Coral Reef Alliance. Donations can also be made directly by visiting their website:

Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.

Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by:

Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection
Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to.
