Top 10 Powerful Passports of 2019 | MojoTravels

This little booklet is your ticket to see the world . . . but they’re not all created equal! Welcome to MojoTravels, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 10 Powerful Passports of 2019.

For this list, we’re looking at passports from around the world that enable you to travel the globe with the least limitations. To put this list together, we looked at the two big authorities on passports. First, the Henley Passport Index, which assigns 1 point to a passport for every country that can be entered without the need for a visa, or which offers a visa on arrival or similar arrangement. Second, the Passport Index, which takes into account the number of visa-free and visa-on-arrival countries accessible with each passport. Please note, this list is based on early 2019 rankings and the power of passports changes regularly.

Top 10 Passports Gaining the Most Power (2019) | MojoTravels

This little booklet is your ticket to see the world, but the power each one holds is constantly changing! Welcome to MojoTravels, and today we'll be looking at Top 10 Passports Gaining the Most Power (2019).

For this list, we’re looking at passports from around the world that experienced the greatest growth in terms of power between 2018 and 2019, as documented by passportindex.org. Note: from 2018 to 2019, the passport of the United Arab Emirates added access to a staggering 36 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations, taking it from a passport that didn’t even crack the top 10 to arguably the most powerful passport in the world. Though the UAE’s upward momentum is in a league of its own (more than doubling that of its closest competitor), we thought we’d take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on a number of other countries whose passports are similarly on the upswing.

About PassportIndex
The Passport Index is an interactive online tool that provides its users with insights about passports, including the ability to compare and rank the world’s passports. Rankings are based on the freedom of movement and visa-free travel open to holders of particular passports. The site allows the display of various territories' passports using a variety of filters such as region and passport cover colour.

World Openness Score
The World Openness Score is a measure that tracks the ability of the world’s population to travel visa-free. It has grown from 17,904 to 20,143 between 2015 and August 2018.

Methodology
The Passport Index compares passports mainly on their visa-free travel options, but also on how welcoming the countries are to visiting foreigners. In its ranking, The Passport Index looks at 193 United Nations member countries and six territories, which include ROC Taiwan, Macao (SAR China), Hong Kong (SAR China), Kosovo, Palestinian Territory and the Vatican. Territories annexed to other countries such as Norfolk Island (Australia), French Polynesia (France), British Virgin Islands (Britain) are excluded.

Visa-free score: The Passport Index ranks passports based on a total visa-free score, which assigns passports a point for each country their holders can visit without a visa, with a visa on arrival or by obtaining electronic travel authorization (ETA). The country with the highest visa-free score has the most powerful passport.

Welcoming Score: The Passport Index awards one point to each country’s passport which allows its bearer to enter visa-free or with visa on arrival. The country with the highest welcoming score is the most welcoming country in the world.

World Openness Score: The World Openness Score is a measure that reflects the travel openness between countries. It has grown from 17,904 to 18,680 between 2015 and August 2017. On 21 November 2018 it had reached 20,189.

Global Mobility Score: The Global Mobility Score is a benchmark that shows an individual’s level of freedom of global mobility reflecting one or more passports in their possession. Higher scores reflect increased freedom of mobility.

Ranking
Global Passport Power Rank: World’s passports are ranked by their total visa-free score. Countries that share equal visa-free scores, are sorted by the number of visa-free countries portion of that score.
Individual Passport Power Rank: Data from the latest UN Human Development Index is used to further break the ties and order the countries in unique ranks.
Welcoming Countries Rank: The Passport Index ranks countries by how welcoming they are to other nationalities.

WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL PASSPORT Shocking Insights In Covidious Times. How Does Your Passport Compare?

The Passport Index - Which country has the most powerful passport in times of Covid-19?

0:13 - The Most Powerful Passports in the World

Your Passport can be your gateway to other countries or be a hindrance to you.

This pocket-size booklet is not just for travel identification purpose but can also be a source of pride.

Passports allow more freedom and unrestricted access to other countries which not all travellers have a choice.

In our new world order, dictated by coronavirus, the world's passports have taken a rollercoaster ride in rankings.

How countries managed their response to the coronavirus pandemic affected their passport rankings.

But who are the biggest losers and the biggest gainers?

You'll never guess how many visa-free countries you need to lose to retain a top ranking.

You may be surprised which continent dominates the list in times of the coronavirus.

01:07 - WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL PASSPORT

It is a bittersweet moment for holders of New Zealand passport as it takes the top spot in the world's power rankings.

The New Zealand passport is now the most valuable travel document in the world according to a recent ranking by the Passport Index.

The index which compares the access granted by the passports of 193 United Nations member countries deemed the New Zealand passport to be the world's most powerful.

But what does this label mean during a global pandemic?

01:55 - The World's Most Powerful Passports During Covid-19

The Coronavirus pandemic which has caused a radical change in visa-free travel has also meant that New Zealand has visa-free access to fewer countries than before.

Although New Zealand passport holders have not been affected as badly by travel restrictions, unlike other nationalities.

Following Australia's extending of quarantine free travel to New Zealand passport holders – there are now 129 countries offering visa-free access.

This is up 80 countries from the height of the pandemic crisis in six months ago.

However, it is a decrease of 40 places offering restriction-free travel to New Zealanders in 2019.

Japan slips to second place, along with joint entries Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Ireland, South Korea and Australia.

European countries make up the bulk of the top 10 list, as most retain access to the Schengen 'free movement' zone with few travel restrictions between borders.

A remarkable absence from the top 10 is the United States, which fell to a low of 21st place in the passport rankings.

While it has regained some footing since July, the freedom once enjoyed by US passport holders have been badly affected by the impact of coronavirus in the country.

In July the US passport dropped to an all-time low of 28th in the rankings below Mexico and Uruguay. Perhaps no passport has fallen from grace so quickly as the American travel document.

It was pointed out at the time by the index's compilers that the US travel document provided roughly equivalent access to many of the countries the current Whitehouse administration had sought to block from its borders.
