It was a battle that Poland was not supposed to have won: A David and Goliath battle so pivotal yet so criminally-overlooked in the shadows between two world wars. If Poland lost, it would mean the end of its short-lived independence. But for the rest of Europe, a Soviet victory could have changed the history of the continent immensely. 100 years later, we take a look at the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, or as it's known in Polish - Cud Nad Wisłą (ENG: The Miracle On The Vistula).

Keep Digging! New Archaeological Discoveries in Central Asia

The Silk Road played a world-changing role in ancient history. Central Asian civilisations influenced Europe and China, and infamous figures from Alexander the Great to Genghis Khan destroyed and, in some cases, rebuilt what were at the time the largest, most populous cities on the planet.
In this talk, our guest expert Sophie Ibbotson will present some of the most exciting new archaeological discoveries from the region, including a previously unknown megalithic culture, a polo stadium built for 10,000 spectators, and the lost city of Alexandria on the Oxus.

How The World Became Spicy (In Only 20 Years)

It all started with a simple question- when did Thai food become spicy?

From there, we did our best to find an answer that's never before been properly explained, unraveling the entire story of the post-Columbian spice trade, taking us to the ports of southern Africa, the kitchens of Gujarat, and the central Asian plateau as we follow the written, genetic, and linguistic history of the humble chili from the New World to the Far East.

This is our attempt at telling the story of the history of the chili pepper: history's spiciest conquest.

In December 1985, UNESCO decided that Segovia and its aqueduct should be part of the World Heritage Site. There was no shortage of reasons as the city is remarkable for its beauty, environment, buildings and streets.

With an economy based on its cultural and gastronomic assets, the city includes interesting museums and showrooms; and its streets and squares become every year, for a few days, the scene of artistic activities such as Holy Week or the puppet performances of Titirimundi. Folksegovia has become the world’s most prestigious music festival in Spain.

Palace courtyards, convent cloisters and the facades of important buildings are also the scene of the many days of the International Festival, during which one can flourish with Chamber Music Week, the Youth Festival and the Festival Open to Theater, Music and Dance. Its two university campuses also promote training and cultural activities, making Segovia a must-see.

The territory currently occupied by the province of Segovia was, at first, a Celtic stronghold. During the Roman period it belonged to the juridical convent of Clunia and during Visigothic Hispania it became the episcopal seat of the Catholic Church. The surprising speed of the conquest of Visigothic Hispania by the Muslims in the 8th century strongly conditions the conformation of the territory of Segovia.

The civil wars between Berbers and Arabs in the 8th century forced them to abandon the center and the north of the peninsula. In the twelfth century the repopulation of Sepúlveda and Sacramenia begins, but in any case during this period the territory of Segovia will remain sparsely populated, with eremitic colonies, groups of Christian cattle breeders, without having a determined social or political organization.

Segovia Cathedral
The Lady of Cathedrals

She is known as “The Lady of Cathedrals” for her size and elegance; the Holy Cathedral Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and San Frutos of Segovia is a cathedral built between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Gothic in style but with Renaissance features, it is the latest Gothic cathedral in Spain and Europe, as it was built in the middle of the 16th century, when in Europe it was Renaissance architecture that prevailed. took precedence. The old Cathedral of Saint Mary of Segovia was destroyed in 1520, during the War of the Communities, and it was therefore in 1525 that the construction of a new cathedral began under the direction of Juan Gil de Hontañón.
