Drive Through Te Puke - Kiwifruit Capital of the World in New Zealand

Te Puke is known as the Kiwifruit Capital of the World for good reason. The town is surrounded by kiwifruit orchards and pack houses, and it traditionally hosts an anuual festival that pays tribute to the kiwifruit industry and its role in the town.

Te Puke is part of the coastal Bay of Plenty region and conveniently located a short drive from several major centres – Tauranga , Rotorua and Whakatane

Te Puke owes its prosperity to kiwifruit – a natural delicacy that's brown and furry on the outside; bright green and juicy on the inside. Hundreds of local growers produce millions of kiwifruit, which are exported worldwide. You can even visit a working kiwifruit orchard. Honey and bee-related health products are produced here too. Te Puke is also home to Comvita honey, their visitor centre offers a view of a working hive, and an interactive media experience about the working life of a New Zealand honey bee.

Kiwi picking in the kiwifruit capital of the world: Te Puke, New Zealand

A lot of backpackers and locals seek out kiwifruit picking because it’s a quick way to earn good money, but it’s not as straight forward as you’d think. Sure, some days it’s show up and pick but it’s also still very much of a job and a lot of hard work. Here are some of my biggest takeaways from my time picking.

???? Make global connections. I worked with people from all over the world, learned a lot and made some lasting friendships. Also my language skills came in handy! I had the chance to work with Germans, Kiwis, Czech, French, Scottish, Japanese, Chileans, Argentinians, Chinese, Latvians and more. It’s truly a global industry and super interesting to learn everyone’s stories.
☔️ Find good rainy day hobbies and activities. You won’t pick kiwis in the rain and it may rain a lot.
???? Treat your body right. You will get sore and tired, but it’s okay to take a day off. If you aren’t feeling good both you and your team won’t make good money.
???? Time is money. The harder you work, the closer your team, the better your communication the more money you’ll make.
???? Find a good contractor! There are a lot out there but that doesn’t mean you need to stay somewhere you aren’t happy. Go where the pay is good, you’re treated right and people are transparent. Transparency is the most important thing in picking!
???????? There truly is no I in team. Kiwi picking is a team sport where you pick bins and divide the total by person for your bin rate. Ex: 44 bins by a team of 4 is 11 bins each at your bin rate. You don’t need to be best friends with your team (although it makes it more fun), getting in with a good team can earn all of you good money. Networking is a valuable tool.
???? Have fun! Some days will be hard, but other days you’ll be singing under the kiwi vines with people you just met from around the world.

???? Thames Butterfly and Orchid Garden – New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

Day 3: Join us at the Coromandel’s ridiculously beautiful Thames Butterfly and Orchid Garden! It’s part of our activity challenge in New Zealand’s Biggest Gap.

Yesterday - Day 2 -

Tomorrow – Day 4 –

About this video:

It’s day 3 on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where today’s activity is to go to the Thames Butterfly and Orchid Garden. The affordable activity holds many surprises as we wander around this tropical hot house abundant with beautifully-coloured butterflies and plants. You can find the Thames Butterfly and Orchid Garden just a short drive from Thames in the Dickson Holiday Park. It’s definitely worth checking out in the Coromandel region of New Zealand.

However, things don’t start quite so smoothly this morning when our campervan gets stuck in the mud. Backpacker problems, right? See how we get out of that mess in the video. Plus, we have a few campervan repairs to do so that we can continue on our backpacking trip around New Zealand by campervan!

The Old Packhouse Market Kerikeri

New Zealand: North Island: Te Puke - Kiwi Picking, 2018

Being a backpacker in New Zealand means that there´s a huge probability of becoming a picker. Approx. 100,000 working-holiday makers come to New Zealand every year. A lot of pickers!

Well, there are 2,516 kiwifruit growers in New Zealand and they produce about 140 million kiwi trays (a tray is approx. 3,6kg) for export (valued at 1,660 million dollars in 2016: the highest ever recorded value for exported kiwifruit).????

The video was shot in Te Puke during 2018 kiwi picking season. Usually, we, backpackers, picked around 3 tons per person per day. That´s a big number, isn´t it?

It was a hard job! Fun too, though!
