Djibouti: A Window to Africa's Strategic and Cultural Riches

Crossroads of Africa - Djibouti's Rich Culture and History

Djibouti, a small but strategically important country in the Horn of Africa, has a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period. Once part of various sultanates, it became a French protectorate in the late 19th century and achieved independence in 1977. It's home to diverse ethnic groups, predominantly Somali and Afar, with Islam being the major religion. French and Arabic are official languages, but Somali and Afar are widely spoken. Geographically, Djibouti features diverse landscapes, including the Danakil Desert and the Mousa Ali range. Economically, it capitalizes on its strategic location with major ports and is a hub for regional trade, hosting military bases for several countries. Politically, it's a presidential republic with limited political pluralism and media freedom. Djibouti's culture reflects its nomadic heritage, and its cuisine showcases influences from neighboring countries and France.

The History of Djibouti
The history of Djibouti is a tale that weaves together ancient cultures, colonial influences, and the quest for independence. Situated at the crossroads of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Djibouti's strategic location made it a natural trading hub for centuries. It has seen the footprints of various civilizations, from the ancient Djiboutiians and Greeks to Arab merchants and Ottoman rulers, who recognized its significance as a gateway to the Red Sea.
The 19th century brought European colonial interests, with the French establishing a presence in the region. Djibouti became a French colony in 1888, known as French Somaliland. The colonial period saw the construction of infrastructure, including a railway connecting Djibouti to Ethiopia, further enhancing its role as a trade conduit. The 20th century brought turmoil, as Djibouti underwent periods of struggle for independence, finally achieving sovereignty in 1977 as the Republic of Djibouti.
In the decades since gaining independence, Djibouti has sought to harness its geographical significance for economic growth. The nation's ports and naval bases have made it a valuable partner in international trade and security efforts. Djibouti's history serves as a testament to its enduring resilience and its ability to navigate through the currents of changing powers, ultimately forging a distinct identity as a bridge between continents and cultures.

Djibouti

Djibouti is in northeast Africa, at the tip of the Horn of Africa, and at the entrance to the Red Sea. It borders Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia.

It is a small country, about the size of Wales (UK). But it packs a punch, with some stunning places to visit. For example Lac Assal, at the lowest point in Africa, fringed by dazzling salt flats. And Lac Abbe, in its landscape of limestone chimneys. If you want to chill out, Moucha Island is ideal.
In summer Djibouti gets very hot, so the best time to visit this beautiful country is between October and April.

Exploring Lac Abbé in Djibouti

Exploring Lac Abbé in Djibouti, which has been named by Lonely Planet as one of their Best in Travel destinations of 2018. We visited in December 2017.

Lac Abbé was used as a location for the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. With its belching chimneys and steaming hot springs, the salt 'lake' is a suitably apocalyptic setting. It is located on the Ethiopian border in the west of the country. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon to witness the truly magical sunset.

Decan wildlife reserve in Djibouti

The wildlife sanctuary, DECAN (DECouvrir et Aider la Nature), was set up as a refuge for animals that have been orphaned or illegally caged for trafficking purposes. The refuge has been recently renovated and reopened this year with larger compounds for all the animals. The big cats (thankfully!) are housed behind fencing, but many of the herbivores such as ostriches, zebras, gazelles and oryx roam freely.⠀
