Winter Camping For 5 Days in a Hot Tent and Super Shelter

Winter Survival Shelter, Stay Warm Overnight With No Fire

How to build a simple emergency winter survival shelter for use in a solo overnight stay in the field. If you end up getting caught out in bad weather while out in the field and have limited resources this style shelter can be made with no tools, and little skill. Just build it small and use as much material as you have energy to gather, the more you get the warmer you will be.
The Arid Scablands can be a tricky place to be when the weather gets bad. Cold winds, low temperatures and steep cliffs and ledges can become hard to navigate at night. In other areas that have an abundance of resources building a shelter can be pretty simple, and there are many videos of building bamboo huts, stick lean-to's shelters, fern and bark huts. We have to be a little creative out here having almost none of those building materials, even firewood is scarce.

No Sleeping Bag or Shelter - Surviving the Night in the Snow

I wanted to see what it was like spending the night between two Siberian log fires with no sleeping bag or shelter in below-freezing temperatures

I normally would never use this much wood so I figure Id donate $200 to #TeamTrees for all the firewood and the spruce bows I used in this video :p

3 Days Solo Winter Camping - deep snow, no tent, below -20°C

2 nights out in the woods and some seriously difficult snowshoeing and cold weather in Ontario, Canada. The first-day temp was around -12C and dropped to -20C overnight, by far the coldest I have ever experienced sleeping outside. My tarp shelter worked against me this night, an experience I will never forget.

The second night stayed around -9C through the night with light snow so I went without my tarp, a beautiful relaxed evening beneath the stars.

------ Commonly asked questions: ------

Why are you cutting down trees?
The trees I cut down are all dead, trees that die and remain standing dry out and prevent rain and moisture from saturating the wood so it makes great firewood.
Live trees contain a lot of moisture and don't burn, I also love trees and I don't cut down live trees

If you are alone who's filming?
I film everything myself from a tripod and yes I do walk back to get the camera when I film myself walking away from the camera. it's pretty straightforward, it just takes time. Two Unedited Clips from the video -

Are you scared of wild animals?
Bears are Hibernating over winter and wolves aren't an issue in this area, so no

-20C wheres your jacket?
The first-day temp was around -12C and dropped to -20C overnight. Pulling the sled sawing/chopping wood and working hard creates a lot of sweat. If I sweat it will eventually freeze which is bad news so when I'm working I wear a long sleeve a small sweater than a big wool sweater which is on the cooler side but prevents sweating and is perfect for the conditions.

Spoon? Why not Chopsticks?
I ate oatmeal, soup and rice not shown in the video, the sausage spoon thing was a joke :p Yes, chopsticks would work better and are easier for sausage, and yes I am proficient with chopsticks :p

What's with the Poo?
It was some animal Scat I found, I was curious and I didn't recognize it, was hoping someone would point out what animal it was. Its likely Fox scat

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.

We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)

So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.

Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this channel to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.

4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time!

After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time international traveling! And now we are in our 9TH YEAR of finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)

We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ???????????? Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey!

Surviving the Night Under a Rock in the Snow - no sleeping bag

Went out with the hopes of creating a shelter out of a natural formation and found this incredible location. slept in this cave, in the dirt with heavy snow and a snowstorm outside

Smoke at beginning of Video:
I used a clip at 0:47 that I took later in the day because it looked good at that part not realizing that there was clearly smoke showing in the background. I used the same clip at 3:44 which is when I took the video

Taival Outdoors is a channel about the great outdoors, spending time in nature doing everything from day hikes and overnight adventures to bikepacking and multi-day wilderness backpacking. Trekking is close to my heart, but I’m not tied to any particular genre like ultralight or bushcraft – instead I do what I've found through my experience in the wild to work the best for me. I'm also making gear reviews and skill videos based on what I actually use and how I operate in nature. Thanks for watching!

Surviving my first Winter of Extreme Van Life, Blizzard, Snow Storm Camping & Freezing Cold #vanlife

What I learend from my first Winter of Extreme Van Life, Blizzard, Snowy Storm Camping, Extreme Cold in the Arctic North #vanlife #wintervanlife

This is my complete first winter of Winter Van Life in extreme conditions in the North, living in a van during freezing temperatures. Starting in January I go through the whole winter season of snowy winter adventures from January to April, with snow storms, blizzards, extreme cold, extreme snowfall, slippery roads and some amazing winter beauty as well.
I also show you what I learned from my first winter in the van.

Episode 1 of 2.

If you want to support my video creation you can sign up for exclusive content at Patreon.com/NorwegianXplorer

Includes Camping in Winter in snow storm in my van/Rv whereI found myself stuck in a blizzard on a mountain pass in a snow storm. Elements of ASMR and strong wind sounds.
The weather forecast said 27 m/s, 60 mph or 97 kph and the wind and snow was howling. It was a whiteout. At the end of the day I had an interesting stormy view while having my breakfast, coffee and making pan pizzas.

Enjoy camping and vanlife friends from around the world!

About me: I am a Norwegian adventurer and wilderness explorer. My youtube channel focus on outdoor wilderness adventures and exploration, backpacking, hiking, canyoneering, skiing, climbing and mountaineering. Nights spent in a tent, alone or with friends. From the snow covered mountains and misty fjords of Norway and Scandinavia to the remote plateaus of Yellowstone and the debts of the red canyons of Utah to the summit of Mt Whitney and the heart of Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. I love the Wilderness! Email is under For business inquiries, for general questions please comment on a video, I try to answer everyone.
