Macau Holiday: What, How and Why to visit Macao - China (4K)

If you are planning to visit Macau (Macao), in China, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Macau city.

In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including: Kun Iam Temple, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, the fortress of Guia Lighthouse, Monte Fort, the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square, the Mandarin's House, Av. da República, Taipa and Coloane.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow an easy tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Macao.
Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Macau, with his rich historic city center.

WHAT
In Macau there are many attractions to see, all very close together. Here you’ll see a route easy to follow and that passes through the 10 attractions that I liked the most.

1. Kun Iam Temple (Marco Polo): is one of the oldest temples in Macau and inside there is a statue of Marco Polo, of course exciting to see for an Italian like me.
2. Then you can move in Lou Lim Ieoc Garden to see bamboo plants and pagodas everywhere.
3. In the fortress of Guia Lighthouse, with its breathtaking view, I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time in my life.
4. In Monte Fort you can admire the cannons of the colonial era.
5. When you arrive in Ruins of St. Paul’s you can’t think of the ruins of the Igreja do Carmo in Lisbon, the capital of the past colonial empire.
6. Senado Square: is a part of the UNESCO Historic Centre of Macau World Heritage Site.
7. And you have to see this historic residential: the Mandarin's House, a relaxing UNESCO World Heritage Site
8. We end our route in Av. da República, in the south of the Macau peninsula, full of colonial houses. But, if you want to visit more, here two more ideas…
9. Taipa: an area full of skyscrapers and casinos, the main attraction of Macau.
Macao has the highest gambling revenue in the world.
10. And Coloane: not being good players, we went here in this fishing village where we found our dimension, walking around and eating a pastela pastry, a very good Portuguese cream cake.

WHY:
But why visit Macao? The real attraction of this city is its diversity, both architectural and ethnic. Macao is the mix of two cultures: that of Portugal, today a small nation, once however the center of an empire that arrived here; and that of China, once in crisis, closed in on itself and today the second world power. How variable the history is, isn’t it?
That colonial architecture of small Portuguese churches near the modern skyscrapers creates this memorable picture of Macao! Have a good travel!!

Saving Macau’s Dying Language

Macau is best known today for its casinos, but 20 years ago, it was a colony governed by the Portuguese, who had been there for over 400 years. Many of the Portuguese traders married Chinese women, and their children developed their own distinct food, culture, and language.

But now this mixed-race group, known as the Macanese, makes up less than 1 percent of Macau’s population, and their language, Patuá, is dying.

Macau is perhaps one of the most unique nations I've ever visited. Who would have thought that Portugal had an entire colony for almost 500 years in China. What makes Macau even more authentic is how well preserved the colonial buildings are, given you a real authentic experience of how life must have been like in the past centuries.

Next Episode: Hong Kong Guide - TOP 30 Attractions

Special thanks to my friend Emily for showing me Taipa & Cotai

The easiest way to reach Macau is by TurboJET ferry from Hong Kong for just $171 HK dollars or $22 US dollars for a one-way. Do bring your passport because you will have to go through immigration! Once in Macau jump into a taxi towards your hotel or Airbnb ($47 USD OFF) but keep in mind that most taxi's in Macau do not have seat-belts.

Macau is a great place for new and unique selfies, my favorite place being this incredible shot taken from R. Nova a Guia street. It took me almost an hour to find this secret site for that magical selfie. It is a perfect blend of new and old, like a giant spaceship just crash landed into a tiny Portoguese village.

Macau does offer an incredible fusion cuisine of Chinese and Portuguese called Macanese! With popular dishes like African chicken, Pork chop buns, Pork Jerky, Portuguese egg tarts (Pastel de Nata and plenty of desserts including durian ice cream and steam milk pudding from Yee Shun Milk.

The most popular tourist attractions in Macau include the Ruins of St. Paul's of which only the front facade is still standing after 3x major fires and Senado Square for its beautiful Portuguese-style cobble stone roads. Do not miss visiting other gems like Monte Fort, Museum of Macau and the villages of Taipa and Coloane for an authentic Portuguese colonial experience.

Macau's nightlife may be small but does have a few fantastic places for a night out, I recommend to start off the night at SKY 21, a gorgeous rooftop lounge on top of the AIA tower overlooking the Grand Lisboa and Macau Tower, they often have a live DJ, ping-pong and shisha's for a fun evening and is open until 4am.

My favorite experience in Macau was the Macau Bungee, World's highest urban bungee jump at 233 meters or 764 feet with a 6 or 7 second free-fall with a speed of 120km/h, click here for my full Macau Bungee experience. The bungee jump is pricey, roughly $400 US dollars, they also offer a Sky Jump, Sky Walk and Tower Climb for the true thrillseekers.

In conclusion, Macau truly surprised me, especially after staying here for 6 days. Most tourists make a day trip from Hong Kong but that is simply too short to do this nation justice. I recommend visiting Macau for 2 days and 2 nights to truly take in this unique former Portuguese colony and all its beauty.

WHAT IS MACAU? (Las Vegas of Asia)

If you think Las Vegas his the gambling center of the world, then think again!

WELCOME TO MACAU — this Chinese owned, former Portuguese colony and semi-independent nation will leave you absolutely stunned.

It's my 3rd time in Macau over the last few years, and I get more and more fascinated with each visit.

Macau is not only the Las Vegas of Asia — it is home to 8 of the 10 largest casinos in the world, which take in over 5 times the annual revenue as Sin City. Let's just say that the Chinese love to gamble, and it shows when you walk around this place called Macau.

Gambling aside, Macau is a great place to walk around and enjoy the European architecture while eating delicious Portuguese snacks.

Macau: A City That Blends History, Culture, and Modernity

Macau is a unique city in the world, located on the south coast of China, in the Pearl River Delta. As a former Portuguese colony, Macau has a rich cultural heritage that is distinct from mainland China. In 1999, it became a special administrative region of China, with a one country, two systems approach that grants it a high degree of autonomy.

The city is famous for its casinos, which have made it a major gambling destination and one of the wealthiest cities in the world. However, it also has a rich history and culture that is evident in its architecture, cuisine, and festivals.

Macau has a population of over 650,000 people, most of whom are Chinese, with a significant Portuguese and other foreign community. Its official languages are Chinese and Portuguese, and it has a unique blend of eastern and western cultures.

Visitors to Macau can explore its historic landmarks, such as the Ruins of St. Paul's and the Senado Square, as well as its modern attractions, like the Macau Tower and the Cotai Strip. They can also indulge in the city's famous food, which is a fusion of Chinese and Portuguese cuisines.

Some popular events in Macau include the Macau Grand Prix, the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest, and the Macau Arts Festival. These events attract visitors from all over the world and showcase the city's unique blend of cultures.

Macau is a city that offers something for everyone, from its glitzy casinos to its historic landmarks and cultural events. It is a unique destination that is well worth a visit.

Did You Know Macau Has It's Own Currency? Let Me Show You It
