Why You Should Visit SOUSSE, TUNISIA (& El Jem) ???????? سوسة

Sousse is Tunisian port city with a charming Medina and pristine beaches. After exploring the city centre, I take a day trip to one of North Africa's most spectacular historical sites, the El Jem Colosseum.

WHY Should Tourists Return to SOUSSE, TUNISIA? ???????? (Sousse & El Jem)

Sousse سوسة is a city in Tunisia located just 140 km south of the capital Tunis.

Perhaps most famous for it's purpose built tourism area of Hammam Sousse حمام سوسة and Port El Kantaoui القنطاوي سنتر marina, tourism here was decimated by the terrorist attack in 2015 and covid more recently.

But that's the past - Sousse now has a lovely Medina and beach front but with little tourism.

Why return? This video will show you if you should include Sousse on your Tunisia itinerary.

I'll also visit El Jem, with it's incredibly preserved Roman amphitheatre - perhaps topping the Colosseum of Rome!

EL JEM TUNISIA The magnificent Roman Colosseum of Tunisia | Why you should visit Sousse!

Welcome back to our vlog of Tunisia where we continue our journey to the slightly eastern part of the country.
Taking a train from Tunis we made our way to the magnificent and historic El Jem, the third largest colossuem of the Roman period, tried out some Tunisian fast food, took the famous louage and finally reached Sousse. We explored the Sousse medina, interacted with locals and enjoyed our stay in this beautiful city of Tunisia.

Tunisian Dinar is a closed currency which means you cannot bring in or take out any TND cash to/from Tunisia.

1 TND = 1000 millims and you need to carry enough coins.

As of Sep 2023, the bank notes mostly used are of 5, 10, 20, and 50 denominations and the coin denominations are 1,2 and 5 TND and 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 milims.

لم نر الكثير من السياح الهنود في تونس. لكننا أحببنا كرم الضيافة للتونسيين.

Tunisia Visa for Indian Passports in Sep 2023 :

As of Sep 2023, Indian passport holders need pre-arranged visas to Tunisia from an overseas Tunisian consulate. We applied from the consulate of Tunisia in Nice, France and the process was time consuming.

Visa Fees: 75 Euros each (cash only)

Documents submitted: Passport copy, Residence Proof in France, Filled in and signed Application Form, Photograph, Hotel Bookings (Booked on Booking.com, having accommodation proof is mandatory for Tunisia tourist visa) and round trip flight tickets

20th July 2023: Submitted application, paid visa fees, they did not keep the passport with them.

12th Aug 2023: Went to the consulate for a follow up on the visa processing, they told us our file reached the Tunisian Ministry on 26th July, decision was still pending.

25th Aug 2023: Got a call from the consulate that the visa has been approved and to come with our passports.

25th Aug 2023 (same day): Went to the consulate and got the visa stamp.

The entire process was pretty straight forward and simple, the hardest part being the wait from 20th July to 25th Aug. Normal processing time for Tunisia visa here is around 3-4 weeks.

Exploring Monastir, Sousse & El Jem in TUNISIA

Video chapters:
00:03 - 1. Exploring the Ribat of Monastir.
01:57 - 2. The Medina and the Kasbah in Sousse.
05:30 - 3. The magnificent Amphitheatre of El Jem.
11:58 - Extra clip 1: Happy Tunisian people at the Ribat.
12:15 - Extra clip 2: My friendly guide to the Medina in Sousse.
12:40 - Extra clip 3: Mahdia's best spot revealed by a kind local girl.

I was on a short winter holiday in Tunisia and visited three places with unique attractions to explore. Firstly, I was surprised over how grand the Ribat of Monastir was, then how busy it was in the Medina of Sousse and finally how similar the Amphitheatre in El Jem was to the Colosseum in Rome (but without the crowd!). But what made me so happy during this trip was how happy and friendly the Tunisian people was and they all wanted to help and show me their beautiful country.

I can warmly recommend Tunisia as your next tourist destination. But check out my video first for inspirations.
