Why WestJet Flew 20-Year-Old 767s

In 2015 and 2016, WestJet Airlines of Canada took delivery of four Boeing 767s, all formerly flown by Australian flag carrier Qantas.

Although the decision to buy a small fleet of used 767s may seem bizarre, they served a very important role for WestJet, as a way for them to test the waters of transatlantic flying.

Although all four aircraft are no longer with WestJet, it’s worth looking back on the past 5 years with these aircraft, and this widebody experiment as a whole.

This is the WestJet 767 story.

Why WestJet Leased Boeing 757s

WestJet will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and it's been interesting to watch them progress from 737-200s to 787-9s!

Before they committed to adding widebody aircraft to their fleet though, some might not know that they had actually leased some Boeing 757s.

This is the WestJet 757 story!

With thanks to @westjet for the North American 757 photos.

Why Flying Ryanair Is Worth It????

Here’s why I choose to fly @ryanair????

People love to hate on Ryanair but honestly how can you complain about a €10 or €20 ticket? Even if they’re more expensive, let’s say €100, odds are their competitors will be at least 2 to 3 times more. There’s no way I am paying that much more for a free bottle of water and the ability to say I don’t fly Ryanair????????‍♂️ In most cases, I can add an extra legroom seat, a meal, airport priority, and still pay less than I would to fly their full-service competitors.

As someone who grew up in a secondary city, I am also really grateful for Ryanair because they opened up a ton of routes that wouldn’t have been operated by any other airlines. They, more than any other European airline, contribute to connecting this part of the world????????

If you are one of those people who refuses to fly Ryanair (but not just because of pride), I’d love to hear why in the comments????

WestJet's Small Jet Problem

Calgary-based WestJet is going through a bit of a transitional period when it comes to their overall business strategy.

One big announcement that they made recently was an order for 42 Boeing 737 MAX 10s.

This upsizing highlights a bit of an ongoing trend for them when it comes to their fleet - let's see why that might be a problem.

Big Changes at WestJet

Last Thursday, June 16th, WestJet published an article with the headline of “Securing the future: how a growing, stronger, sustainable WestJet benefits Canadians”.

In it, they essentially outline a shift in their business strategy going forward, and a t the helm of all of this is WestJet’s new CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, who joined the airline from the Lufthansa Group in February.

Naturally, it’s all very carefully worded to avoid specifics, but there are a few points in here that are worth talking about!

Why Alberta's Busiest Air Route Exists

Calgary and Edmonton are the two largest cities in Alberta, located about 300 kilometres apart, and 3 hours by car. Yet, there are a substantial number of flights between the two.

So why are there so many flights between these two relatively close cities?

WestJet Retires First 767 - C-FOGJ's Final Takeoff from Calgary Airport

As with many other aircraft around the world these days, the time has come to say farewell to WestJet's four 767s. Their first one, C-FOGJ, left Calgary this morning after 5 months of storage for Lake City, Florida, to start a new life as a cargo bird for Amazon's Prime Air.

C-FOGJ was with WestJet for just shy of 5 years, having been delivered to Calgary early in the morning on August 27th, 2015. The addition of the 767s was a stepping stone for WestJet, and they launched transatlantic service to London-Gatwick from 5 Canadian cities the following year.

With the success of those transatlantic flights and the subsequent investment in the Dreamliners, the 767s were no longer needed, and this was slated to be their last summer anyway. Sadly though, their final passenger flights came much sooner than expected, and all four were stored in Calgary by the end of March.

So, long, FOGJ! Enjoy this bittersweet catch.

Why Air Canada Flew The A340-500

For a brief period in their history, Air Canada flew the rare Airbus A340-500, with just two aircraft. They didn't last long at all, having been removed from service just three years after being delivered new from Airbus.

Today, I explore why Air Canada flew the A340-500!

Why No Canadian Airline Bought The A380

The Airbus A380, the world’s largest airliner, is without a doubt a technological marvel, even if it wasn’t quite the success that Airbus had hoped for.

The current global climate aside, as traffic peaked in Canada pre-2020, and airports became more congested, why didn’t any of Canada’s airlines take advantage of the A380?

I Flew on Japan Airlines' Boeing 767!

Back in May, I spent a week in Japan with a couple friends after flying there on WestJet's inaugural flight from Calgary.

That wasn't the only interesting flight we took on that trip though, and after spending a day in Tokyo, we hopped on board a Japan Airlines 767 to Hiroshima. Let's see what a Japanese domestic flight is like!

I Flew The STRANGEST Transatlantic Route...

About three years ago, I made a video talking about one of the most unique transatlantic flights that Canada gets - Condor's seasonal service between Frankfurt and Whitehorse, Yukon.

In September 2022, I finally got to fly that very route!

WestJet Boeing 737-800 review - Safety Demonstrations CAN Be Funny!

While WestJet received their first Boeing 737 MAX, they were also getting new 737 NG aircraft delivered. One of the latest deliveries to the WestJet fleet is the one that I flew on to Montreal last week.

From Edmonton to Montreal is about a 4 hour flight and it still baffles me that a country can be so big, that you can be on a plane for so long and you still land in the same country.

Remarkably, no on board menus where to be found on the plane. And because it was a flight of just under 4 hours, no lunches were for sale. That was unfortunate, because it was during lunchtime. It still was a very good flight and I very much enjoyed it, regardless of having an hour long turbulence.

Route: YEG-YUL
Flight Number: WS522
Airline: WestJet
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Aircraft registration: C-GOCD (just over a year old)
Seat: 14F (emergency exit)

I Flew on a RARE Boeing 757-300!

Back in September last year, I had some free time in Frankfurt between flights, and naturally went looking to see if there were any interesting planes I could fly on.

Lo and behold, I found just that on one of Condor's many flights to Palma de Mallorca, Spain! Condor still operates some of the rare Boeing 757-300, of which only 55 were built, and I knew I had to take the opportunity to try the world's longest single-aisle airliner!

The Boeing 767: The Aircraft That Changed WestJet

Did you know that up until this year Canadian airline WestJet operated four Boeing 767-300ER aircraft? While only flying with the carrier for under five years, the jet fundamentally changed WestJet from a domestic Canadian airline to a more significant rival for Air Canada.

History of WestJet | Past, Present, and Future

When I saw the words Canadian Airline, chances are, the first airline that comes to mind, is Air Canada. To be fair, that is totally understandable. After all, Air Canada is the largest airline in the country, carries around 48 million passengers a year, and is the national flag carrier of Canada. However, the video today is going to inform you on the history of the second-largest airline in Canada, one not nearly as old or established as Air Canada, but an airline gaining popularity over the last two decades, and it is the one and only, WestJet Airlines.

The LAST EVER WestJet Boeing 767 Flight - Takeoff from Calgary Airport

After 5 years of having the 767 in their fleet, WestJet has officially retired its fourth and last aircraft.

C-FOGT, Tail 673, departed Calgary this morning for the very last time for Lake City, Florida to join the other three aircraft at their new life with Amazon Prime Air.

I definitely feel an attachment to these planes, having caught the delivery flights of all four back when they first arrived in Calgary, and they'll be missed! By WestJet maintenance and customer service though, perhaps not so much.

So long, 767!

What's It Like Flying WestJet During COVID-19?

The aviation industry has changed drastically over the past several months, and Canada's airlines aren't immune to the effects of COVID-19.

As Canada's second largest airline, WestJet has had to make some serious adjustments in their service and their domestic schedules.

Having already flown with their 737 in this new climate, I wanted to get a sense of what it’s like to fly with regional subsidiary Encore, and with mainline WestJet's 787-9 Dreamliner, in these different times.
