St. George is a top destination in Utah and still an underrated place for outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of hiking trails, golf courses, scenic views and so much more.

Snow Canyon State Park is located right near the city (only a 15-minute drive) and offers plenty of hiking, camping and exploration activities.

The city was named for 19th century Morman LDS Church apostle George A. Smith. But settlers were here long before the Morman faith decided to seek the desert sun. The city is conveniently located near Zion National park and is only 90 minutes away from the iconic Las Vegas, Nevada.

Beyond those nearby landmarks, the city is well-suited for other day or weekend trips with places like Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Great Basin and Capitol Reef only located a 2-3.5 hours drive from St. George.

Today I’m sharing the top five things to do if you take a trip to St. George, the national parks, or anywhere in southern Utah!

There are so many great things to see and fun experiences to have when you visit this beautiful area of the country. With my best friend living in Salt Lake City, and Derek’s aunt and uncle retired in St. George, we’ve managed to visit this region a lot over the past five years. And this year we spent an entire month!

The Beginnings of St. George Utah and its historic Pioneer Courthouse

The City of St. George started out much differently than other towns in the Southwest because of America's Civil War. One of its first buildings was the Pioneer Courthouse, which today serves as a museum. Watch this virtual video tour and you'll learn how St. George came into being and how the courthouse played an important role in early life here.
