Why Do Airplanes Avoid Flying Over The Himalayas?

You might have thought there were no corners of the earth modern aircraft didn’t fly over. But there are still a few last frontiers: the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Himalayas, for example.

It’s not that airplanes never overfly these areas. Rather, for safety reasons, they generally prefer not to. Here, we’ll take a look at why airplanes avoid flying over the Himalayas.

A Flight to Mount Everest + World’s Most Dangerous Airport - Lukla

Our helicopter was one of the first to take off at sunrise around 6:20am from Kathmandu Airport. There are many helicopter operators offering tours to see the majestic mountains in Nepal but there’s only a small window of season to do this. I’d recommend going in April or October when the weather is at its clearest and not so cold.

Lukla is the gateway to Mount Everest. There is no road so no car can get there. A flight to Lukla is 25 minutes on a fixed-wing airplane or 40 mins by helicopter. We arrived there at 7am.

We took off again after refueling and headed to Mt Everest, on the way we passed Namche Bazar, Syangboche airstrip, Khumbu Icefall…

Mount Everest is the one with the sharp peak with snow blowing at the top. We were almost at 20,000 ft but Mt Everest stood really tall from where our helicopter was. We were trying to get up to Camp 2 of Mt Everest which is the absolute limit of the helicopter.

We eventually landed at Kala Patthar. I was so frantically taking photos and videos and started to use the oxygen supply from the helicopter. Our next stop is the pristine Gokyo Lake. On the way, we saw the world’s highest glacier, Khumbu Glacier. It really amazes me how close we fly to those mountain terrains. After a brief stop on the lake, we headed towards the world’s highest hotel, hotel Everest view for breakfast.

The whole trip took about 5 hours. The cost of doing it is about $1200 per person sharing on the helicopter. Helicopters don’t just bring tourists, they also bring cargo and bring down sick and fatigue trekkers from the mountain down on a daily basis.

Way Point of our helicopter flight:

1. Kathmandu (4,390 ft / 1,338m)
2. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
3. Namche Bazar (11,290 ft / 3,440m)
4. Syangboche (12,402 ft / 3,780m)
5. Khumbu Icefall (17,999 ft / 5,486m)
6. Mt Everest (29,031 ft / 8,849m)
7. Kala Patthar (18,519 ft / 5,644m)
8. Cho La Pass (17,782 ft / 5,420 m)
9. Gokyo Ri (17,575 ft / 5,357m)
11. Hotel Everest View (12,729ft / 3,880m)
13. Lukla (9,380 ft / 2,860m)
14. Kathmandu (4,390 ft / 1,338m)

I Went To Tibet, China’s Most Restricted Province (#162)

Tibet. A land that is known by many, and seen by very few. As a foreigner, it's the most restricted place to visit in China. You need to register in advance for a group tour, who will get you all the required paperwork for going around.

But once you get there, once you touch down in Lhasa, you have to forget about all that. It's a beautiful place, with incredibly friendly people. I couldn't wait to experience it, starting with the capital city.

One thing I couldn't forget though was the altitude..

What Is China Really Doing In Tibet? (#163)

Tibet. I've always wanted to go there and explore. Nowadays the only thing you ever hear about the place is how China runs it. What was life like there now, in 2023? How has Tibetan society changed?

To visit Tibet as a foreigner, you need a permit and a group tour. It's not easy to go around exploring on your own. But I made it my mission to find some time to sneak off and talk to the real people of Tibet.

Tibet Travel: Is It Safe to Travel Tibet?

With incredible plateau view and harsh natural environment closely intertwined, traveling to Tibet is truly like no other! So, is it safe to visit Tibet? Well, the answer is definitely “Yes”! Let’s take a quick look.

High Altitude (AMS)
Averaging an elevation of above 4000m, Tibet is arguably the highest place for travel on our planet. For that, some are pretty concerned about the issue of altitude sickness.

Actually, so long as you are physically fit and have no heart problem, it’s quite safe to visit Tibet. Though for the newcomers to Tibet, you may experience headache, dizziness, or shortness of breath, etc., there is no need to panic. Have a good rest; as your body gradually gets acclimated to Tibetan plateau, all the initial discomfort will disappear soon.

Climate
Next comes to weather and climate in Tibet. Due to the high altitude, the air in Tibet is crisp, arid, and thin. Eye-blinding sunshine and dramatic temperature change are pretty common. Do dress properly and keep yourself warm; it’s better to wear multiple layers. On top of that, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, are also quite necessary.

Road Condition, easy transport( reliable, efficient)
The transport to Tibet is also quite safe. You may choose to fly to Lhasa or take the scenic Tibet train, or even travel overland from either Chengdu or Kathmandu to Lhasa. Of these three, the Tibet train is the most cost-efficient and punctual choice.

Surprisingly, the road condition in major 7 prefectures across Tibet is exceptionally good. The well-built asphalt road leads to all the landmark attractions, including EBC.

Local Tibetan
Unlike the preconception that Tibetans are barbarian and rude, you will find the smiles of local Tibetans infectious and genuine; their devotion for Buddhism and pure innocence worth your respect; since all the Tibetans are Buddhists, the crime and theft in Tibet is hardly heard. It’s a perfect place for a female, solo travelers, or family tour.

Other Dos and Don’ts (religious taboos)
One thing to remind you. As you visit Tibet, try not to violate Buddhist taboos. Skimpy clothes are not allowed for visiting Buddhist monasteries; do not swim in the holy lakes in Tibet; don’t take photos inside the Tibetan monasteries, etc. When you are not sure of a local Tibetan custom, asking your guide’s permission first is always a wise choice.

Besides, you don’t need a particular vaccination for Tibet visit. The plague can’t survive at such high altitude and all the day-to-day visit is well-designed for best tour experience and travel safety.

When Visiting Tibet, There are 3 Things You Can't Do [Insider Tibet Travel Tips]

Tibet, the land of snows, is a place of breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. You will have a unique and unforgettable experience, however, there are three things you can’t do in Tibet.

Hello everyone, this is Lotse, your Tibetan local tour guide.

In Tibet, you can see the prayer flags everywhere. It is an important part of Tibetan Buddhism. These colorful flags, adorned with sacred symbols and mantras, are believed to spread goodwill and bring blessings to all human beings.

So, avoid removing them without permission. Never step or walk over them. The proper way is to lift them above your head and walk under them.

The second thing is that you can’t do is taking photography inside the monastery or temple. It is not allowed to take photos inside the monasteries. But you can take photos outside. So, when you walk into the chamber of the monasteries, put down your camera, embrace the serenity, and allow the temple’s essence to resonate within you.

The third thing is that you can’t do is going around buildings counter clockwise.

According to Tibetan buddhism, no matter whether you are a pilgrim or a casual visitor, all people should walk clockwise when visiting Tibetan monasteries.

So, no matter you are visiting a monastery, Barkhor Street, or following the pilgrims doing a kora, don’t go counterclockwise.

There are more things you need to know before taking a lifetime Tibet. Just contact us for more.

We are the Tibetan local travel agency, and we will show you the real Tibet, Let’s enjoy a spiritual trip in Tibet together.

তিব্বতের ওপর দিয়ে বিমান ওড়ে না। Flying over Tibet is Dangerous | Reasons for not flying over Tibet

Tibetan Plateau is the highest in the world, and is rightly said to be the “Roof of the World.” Mount Kailash, the holiest of the holy mountains is situated in the Tibetan Plateau as well. At that much of an elevation and being such a sacred place for at least four different religions, the holy mountain also has surrounded itself with more than a handful of mysteries and secrets and folklores. Most of the mysteries are godly or been on rounds since eternity, but some are there which can be explained. Like the one asking the question as to why the planes or helicopters not fly over the Kailash-Mansarovar or for that matter, over Tibet itself? The curious mystery investigators shall be blessed by getting answers by reading out further.
As the years have passed by, many theories have been flying over to try and state a logical reason for the flights not going above the snowy peaks. Before indulging into the discussion of cracking an answer we should first see what people have formulated about the mystery. There are some superstitions that say that an invisible force or a ghostly presence does not allow the airliners to go forward from a certain point at that high of an elevation. Keeping these aside, let’s start digging on the reasons for the topic.

Altitude :
The Himalayan Mountain ranges are spread across a large amount of Asia covering parts of India, Nepal and Tibet. This range has the highest of all peaks on Earth, including Mount Everest (29,035 ft). While most commercial planes are said to be able to fly above 30,000 feet above sea level, they usually fly in the troposphere. As we all might have read at some point in our science classes, the Earth’s atmosphere consists of 5 main layers, the troposphere is the lowest of them all. The Himalayan top touches the stratosphere, the second layer. Now, the thing is that the air in this layer as well as the level of oxygen is extremely thin, which would cause turbulence for the machine and uneasiness for the travellers. Other than this, the wind flow speed will be very strong which could cause the movement of the ‘craft even more difficult.
Emergency Landing:
If some technical difficulty arises or engines are jammed or something, the pilot has the responsibility to emergency land the aircraft. Now, the catch when flying over the mountain ranges will be that an emergency land needs to be done on a flat surface which would be an impossible task at that great height. The risk factor increases due to the presence of mountains everywhere.
The Drift down Procedure:
Most of the aircraft are programmed to be able to fly at high altitudes with low levels of oxygen. But the airlines are given just a short time to fly in oxygen. If an emergency arises, and the supply of oxygen in the cabin is decreasing at a high rate, the aircraft needs to descend at around 10,000 feet to get the oxygen back. This would be an issue when travelling at a place so high up and trying to descend more than half of the altitude you were at.
Airport Hopping not Possible:
Aircraft are to follow a geodesic path to reach from one point to another maintaining a constant velocity and in shortest of times. All plane routes are planned according to the geodesic curve. But Tibet has just two small airports that too at a distance of at least a thousand kilometres from each other.
These are a few of the various reasons which help decode the Mystery of any flight or helicopter not flying over the Roof of the World. It is not as much of a mystery now, as it is a scientific reason for the same.
