Why Don't Indians Buy Gaming Consoles? (Video Game Market Tour ????????)
Gaming is huge in India, but gaming consoles are nearly non-existent in India. Why is that? I went to a video game market in New Delhi to see the condition of the market and tell you why barely anyone are buying Xboxs, Playstations, or Switches in India.
This is the largest video game market in Delhi, located in Karol Bagh's Gaffar Market. But that's not saying much, because there are only 5 video game stores there! The rest of Delhi's stores are scattered around the city. It's quite a strange thing when resellers in India tend to clump around in single locations like Nehru Place for computer parts, Gaffar Market for mobile phones, or Banjara Market for antiques.
At these game stores, all consoles are available including Xbox Series X and Playstation 5. Even Nintendo switches are available, even though Nintendo doesn't officially sell in India.
If you want to avoid India's high prices for video game consoles, there's really only one way. You have to have a friend from the US carry your console back for you. That way you can avoid the incredibly high duty taxes. Or a shopping trip to Dubai will also work if you're buying multiple expensive items while you're there.

India's Oldest Video Game Shop?
This might be the oldest video game store in India! Babu started his store in 1980 by renting out the Nintendo Game & Watch handhelds for 1 rupee an hour.

This was Nintendo's first successful video game product and it led the way for their mega-hit, Gameboy.
30 years later, Babu's store is still here in Pune, and he has a workshop where he repairs and mods consoles.
Where I'm from, sadly, these types of independent game stores run by gamers are long gone, so I loved visiting Babu's shop and buying a Nintendo Switch. What's your favourite video game? Tell me in the comments.

Inside an Indian Video Game Store from the 80s! (+ Workshop Tour!)
I visited a video game shop in India that started in the 80s. Watch as we tour Babu's Video Games and go to his workshop to see where he mods and repairs consoles. He also shows us his massive retro gaming collection, including many rare retro games from Nintendo's Game & Watch, NES, SNES, and N64 systems. It brought back a lot of nostalgia from my childhood as a Super Nintendo gamer!
I also decided to get back into the Nintendo ecosystem after hearing so many people rave about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017). And I wanted to try all the other Nintendo-exclusive games I missed over the years like Metroid Prime Remastered. So at the end of the video, I bought a Nintendo Switch OLED. Now I'm ready for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023)!

Update: How's the Nintendo Switch been? I fell in love again with handheld gaming! I can game anywhere while travelling and catch up on many older games I missed. It's been an excellent addition to my Xbox Series X and PS5. I'm looking at the Steam Deck next.

See what's available inside a small video game store in Peshawar, Pakistan's smugglers' market (Karkhano Bazaar). There we'll see what consoles are available in Pakistan and why both Indians and Pakistanis prefer to buy PCs and buy last-gen consoles.
The most selling consoles today in Pakistan are still the last-gen PS4 and last-to-last-gen Xbox 360 because they can easily be modified to play pirated games. Pakistanis earn significantly less per annum than Westerners but are expected to pay American prices for console games. Hence the popularity of PC gaming and old chipped consoles. Netflix, Spotify, YouTube Premium, and Amazon Video offer special pricing for this region of the world for this very reason.

We explore Lahore's most famous video game market where you can find everything including cheap second-hand consoles, repairmen, PlayStation 5, pirated games, and modchips. I grew up modding my PS1, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PS3 so this market really took me back to those days.
Why Don't Indians Buy Gaming Consoles? (Video Game Market Tour ????????)
This console market is in the Palace Arcade under the Sunfort Hotel in Liberty Market, Lahore, Pakistan. There you'll find 10-12 stores selling video game consoles, video games, accessories, and console repairmen. They sell all consoles including Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation. Next-gen consoles are available there, but for marked-up prices due to the global semi-conductor shortage.
Xbox Series X price: Rs. 115,000 PKR.
Playstation 5 price: Rs. 160,000 PKR.
If you want a cheap console, then the Sunfort Hotel market is also the place for you. The full array of previous-generation gaming consoles with modchips or software mods are available. Xbox 360, PS3, and are all available there for cheap rates. Xbox 360 and PS3 start at around Rs. 18,000 PKR. Pirated games are extremely cheap at Rs. 150 PKR per game. PC games are Rs. 70 PKR per DVD (but just bargain the seller down on games on many DVDs).

Scam Shops in Pakistan & India - Don't Be Fooled!
While travelling in India & Pakistan you'll find shops that have straight-up copied a famous shop's name, and then, opened their store next-door to the original!
In this video, you'll see the original Grato Jalebi sweet store in Rawalpindi and there's a big queue because locals know it's legit. But just a few metres down the road are 3 copies with the same name.
Karim's in Delhi also has the same problem. There are many counterfeit Karim's restaurants.
These fake shops make enough money to stay open by simply fooling travellers.
So don't be fooled, check online reviews to verify locations. Has this ever happened to you?

I revisited Babu's incredible retro game shop and went deeper into his story and his unseen game collection in his childhood home. I also stumbled upon many PS2 games that were made in India!
I found many retro consoles, including Sega Nomad, Dreamcast Karaoke, Super Nintendo, and many more! Plus, a massive collection of games that were made in India during the PlayStation 2 era, including Hanuman: The Boy Warrior, Desi Adda: Games of India, Don 2: The Game, RA.One: The Game, and Cart Kings.
