Why Cuban cab drivers earn more than doctors

x

The Secret Behind Cuba's Extraordinary Healthcare

The success of Cuban healthcare has little to do with cutting-edge equipment or advanced diagnostic techniques. But Cuba's doctors pay a heavy price.

The Cuban government operates a national healthcare system that covers all of its citizens. It also exports tens of thousands of doctors to just under 70 countries.

For decades Cuba has held its own against first world countries on in most indicators of health. Their infant mortality and life expectancy is on par with the United States. Detractors have pointed out discrepancies in the statistics but the overall message is clear: For the resources it has, Cuba is providing excellent health services to its citizens.

This may soon change. Cuba recently eased restrictions on its doctors leaving Cuba. This may result in a mass exodus of medial personnel to countries that pay far better than what the Cuban government can afford.

Whether you praise or criticize Cuban healthcare, it’s worth taking a close look at a system that provides universal healthcare at a fraction of the cost of most developed countries.

What’s in Cuba’s Monthly Food Distribution?

It's a great idea - provide everyone the staples they need at a fraction of the market rate. Until it runs out...
_____________
Even Castro realized that you can’t learn on an empty stomach, so in 1962 he started giving everyone a monthly food distribution. All you need is a ration booklet.

It gets you rice, beans, and a host of other dry goods. And it’s all incredibly cheap:
• Sugar’s a penny a pound.
• Oil’s less than two cents.
• Salt is practically free.

In fact, the entire distribution costs about $1.20 – That’s 40 times cheaper than the open market. In an effort to save money, cigarettes were taken off the distribution list, along with certain hygiene products, like toothpaste. Cubans now have to pay two day’s wages for a brand name bar of soap and almost as much for the local kind.

It’s not a high-tech system – everything’s still done by hand. But it seems to work, and the manager is extremely well organized. Unfortunately, the distribution only provides about half your necessary daily calories and each year they cut it back even more.

The meat distribution across the street used to include fish, chicken, sausage, and sometimes eggs. Nowadays if they have anything at all, it’s blended soybean paste.
Once they sell out they just lock their doors until next month.

Cuba's Best Driver? - Full Movie (HD)

This is the full version of this story...
In Cuba, things - and people - aren't always what they seem. The people you see and meet on the street providing goods and services often have very different careers & training than you may suspect. The woman making coconut drinks may be a doctor. The man offering a photo tour of Havana is also one of Cuba's preeminent photo journalists. And your driver? Well, he may just be a lawyer. I spent a week on the road with Javier, my driver and window into an aspect of modern Cuban culture I find fascinating: the second economy.

Better Cuban Food Than Cuba?

Miami's Little Havana holds the rare (perhaps exclusive) distinction of being an expat neighborhood that has surpassed the motherland in terms of culinary importance (due to a variety of political and socio-economic factors that we wont get into here). We've been to big Havana and can attest to the fairness of that determination.

So join us as we show you around one of the most culinarily fascinating neighborhoods in one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the Unites States. As always, we're washing it all down with copious amounts of coffee and booze. #gobad

Could You Live In This Country? ????????

???????? Most of us have access to the basic essentials in life. We take being able to use an ATM for granted, that the trains won't run out of petrol and be cancelled or that milk will be available in a shop when you visit. But the people of Cuba are not so lucky. They live under a different system and to be honest, it's not working out well for them...So tell me, could you handle live under that system?

What happens when you get robbed in Cuba

The first question everyone asked me about getting robbed in Cuba…

“But I thought PEOPLE ARE GOOD!?”

Yes, what happened in Cuba does not jive with the Nowhere Men philosophy.

But allow me to explain…

When we drove through Latin America, we always kept our wits about us. And even though we squeaked by without any real issues, we met plenty of people who were robbed.

We knew it existed. We knew how much it sucked. And we still know it happens.

But the overwhelming majority of people have good intentions and want to help.

This video - although created ‘by accident’ - is more of a reminder than anything that people are good.

And by the way, it’s important to not walk away from this video with a bad impression of Cubans.

We happened to be THE ONLY CASE reported to the police that day. Crime is very low in Cuba, making my problem all the more ironic.

POISONED / SICK IN CUBA ????

While studying in Cuba, I passed out in the middle of a little village and then they had to take me to many hospitals until I ended up in the one for foreigners... I would never suggest anyone to get sick / food poisoned and especially if you get sick in a foreign country things may not be so easy and doctors could mess up. So in the first hospital, they didn't have a solution for my sickness, in the school hospital at EICTV they forced me to take an ambulance and in the hospital for foreigners they weren't really able to understand what I had. And that's why I decided to share this story with you. Plus I never get sick, so everything was new to me and at least now I've got something to share.
Let me know if you'd like to see more storytime travel vlogs ????
What do you think of when you hear the name Cuba? Here is the Cuba that nobody shows you ????
