Why Abandoned Railroads Still Matter ????

Stalin's failed GULAG: The Trans-Polar Railway (Construction No. 501)

The Trans-Polar is also referred to variously as Dead Road, and Stalinbahn, is an incomplete railway in Northern Siberia. The railway was a project of the Soviet Gulag system that took place from 1947 until Stalin's death in 1953. Construction was coordinated via two separate Gulag projects, the 501 Railroad beginning on the River Ob and 503 Railroad beginning on the River Yenisey, part of a grand design of Joseph Stalin to span a railroad across northern Siberia to reach the Soviet Union's easternmost territories.

The purpose of the railway was threefold: to facilitate the export of nickel from neighboring Norilsk; to provide work for thousands of post-war prisoners; to connect the deep-water seaports of Igarka and Salekhard with the western Russian railway network. With the Soviet industry relocated to western Siberia during World War II, it was seen as a strategic advantage to use the northward-flowing river systems to deliver supplies to Arctic Ocean ports. Salekhard was on the Ob River, downstream from Novosibirsk and Omsk, and Igarka was on the Yenisei. Connecting these two rivers was beneficial for transferring goods between cities and regions.

A rebuilt section of the railway between Nadym and Novy Urengoy on the east bank of the Nadym River is still in operation, as is the extreme western section connecting Labytnangi and the railway to Vorkuta. The section from Salekhard to Nadym is planned to be rebuilt, including a new bridge over the Ob to connect Salekhard to the rest of the Russian railway system via Labytnangi.

Me and my friend Kenji hitchhiked along the Trans-Polar Railway and explored some of the abandoned labor camps located next to the railway. We started out our journey in Novyy Urengoy and finished it in Salekhard. Along our way, we visited 2 forced labor camps of GULAG.

Enjoy!

Why Railroads Issue Heat Restrictions

Most areas of America have no need for heat restrictions as it doesn't get hot enough for it to be an issue (heat indexes aren't considered). Here in the southwest, however, daytime summer temperatures often exceed the 110 degree mark, and 120 in certain areas, which are the benchmarks for these restrictions.
So, join me as I talk a little about Heat Restrictions!

ABANDONED CALIFORNIA RAILROAD // Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge

Mountain Biking to the Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge

The Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge is located deep in the California desert down an abandoned California railroad line. To get there you will pass abandoned railroad tunnels and bridges. Along the route you will see several abandoned trains in the California Desert. You can hike or Mountain bike this route. Be careful in the summer months, as it can get very hot. We did this ride in December and the weather was perfect. This is one of the best Abandoned places in California that I have explored

Hidden Soviet Relics Discovered - Abandoned Vehicles | Urbex

With the collapse of communism, many things have changed. The fallen empire left behind a scene of devastation in huge parts of the world. What remains from the socialist era today, are ruins that tell the history of the past. These include the final resting places of precious artifacts. In the fourth episode of our Hungary road trip series, we're exploring maybe the most unique vehicle graveyards of the country. From legendary jet fighters to partially one-hundred-year-old steam engines, we discovered true achievements from Soviet years. Also this time, we had to be especially careful since many adventurers before us have been caught here in the past. Well-prepared, we started two infiltrations of the most impressive vehicle graveyards we have experienced so far! #urbex #abandonedplaces #bwturbex

How Vintage Railroad Signals Work: The Inside Story

There are lots of Railroad Museums around the country, but one of the things that sets the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum apart from most others is its Signal Garden. A large collection of working vintage signals is something I've seen no where else. With wig-wags, semaphores, rotating banners, and many more, Tehachapi has it going on.
Realizing what a rare treasure we have there, I got the idea of showing the inner workings of those with moving parts. So, join me for a look inside these fascinating signals.

In Search of Walkable L.A.: How Defunct Electric Railways Could be Southern California's Salvation

Do you ever think about the inflection point in US history where we stopped building streets and communities for people walking and accessing electrified rail, and started building streets for individuals driving their personal vehicles wherever and whenever they wanted? Well, I do!

Today's video is an exploration of the history of electrified rail (streetcars) in greater Los Angeles, including the Pacific Electric Railway (the Red Cars and the Los Angeles Railway (the Yellow Cars). Even though the last of the streetcars were ripped out by the middle of the 20th century, the urban form and street design remains, persistent , like a phantom limb that keeps reminding you what once was.

We'll explore great streetcar suburbs like Silver Lake, Larchmont Village, and Highland Park -- L.A. neighborhoods that still have intact urban fabric and are in higher demand than ever. We'll also look at places where the region is investing in modern rail to reconnect and leverage these great assets.

Massive Abandoned Steelworks Leaves Thousands of Workers without Job | URBEX DOCUMENTARY

Urban Exploration: Infiltrating an Abandoned Steel Mill in Germany (English and German subtitles are available!) Episode #133

This colossus is one of Germany’s biggest industrial monuments. In the past, several thousand workers were drudging here under the most severe conditions day after day. In this former steel mill, all the production stages, from processing ore to the final goods, were realized in the tightest of spaces. After 15 years of being decommissioned, the monstrous industrial park was still appearing in working order. But when we were daring to enter the belly of the beast, we realized that the old plant is only a ruin. Pipes and steel beams, thick like tree trunks, are the skeleton of the leviathan but have been gnawed on by rust. So, it became really dangerous to move inside the spacious halls. But curiosity was the reason why we kept exploring and ultimately made an unusual find. And it was also why we had to end our exploration early.

On this adventure, we were accompanied by an anonymous friend. In the past, we were on several mutual explorations and there are even more to come. So, follow him and stay tuned:

Vennbahn: The World's Weirdest Border?

Hidden away in the rolling Eifel hills is one of the world's weirdest international borders: a long, string-shaped piece of Belgium that runs through western Germany. Why is it there, and what does it have to do with an abandoned railway? I went to investigate the story of the Vennbahn...

Along The Railroad 2018 | Abandoned Poland

Join me during a 22 miles long journey along the railroad. In this video, I follow the abandoned railroad line number 190 from Bielsko-Biała towards Cieszyn in Poland. I visit every station on my way to do some climbing at the end and watch fireworks.

2018 was a bad year, I had to withdraw from the university and go back to Poland. I even lost my flashlight on this adventure, but there cannot be a worse year than the worst, so now everything will be better.

The line was abandoned in 2009 and no-one knows the future of it for sure, it's really damaged.
