A Day in the Life of a Maori — New Zealand | The Travel Intern

We have something a little different this time! During our time in New Zealand, we stopped by the Mitai Maori Village and we got to experience the Maori way of life. Centuries ago, the Maori culture set up it a kinship and connection with the land in New Zealand.

We got to learn about the Mitai tribe and experience their customs and traditions. We got to see their version of the Haka (War Dance) and Poi (Traditional Dance), and we even got to try their traditional food, Hangi.

The Travel Project: The Legend of the Haka

A haka will represent many things – to welcome guests, to challenge others, to tell a story, to pay respect or show love – but at its core it will always speak of three elements – a relationship to the land, remembering those who have gone before, and connection.

Maori culture in New Zealand

Discover New Zealand's fascinating Maori culture.

Who Are The Māori People Of New Zealand? Te Puia Rotorua New Zealand ???????? | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Join us for a tour of Te Puia Springs and Kiwi Conservation Center in Rotorua, New Zealand.

It was also our sweet Angelique’s special day, and we thought visiting this geothermal attraction would add to a birthday worth remembering.

We joined a guided tour that introduced us to Maori art, culture, and history. We also had the opportunity to see different traditional spaces such as the Marae and Pātaka, also known as a communal Maori “fridge” or storehouse.

Then, we visited the National Bone & Stone, Wood Carving, and Weaving Schools. They make up the Maori Culture Conservation Center, where students learn traditional Maori arts and crafts, Maori language and history, and much more.

We also had the chance to look at the artworks exhibited in the Āhua Gallery and learn about the traditional Maori war canoes that could fit up to 100 warriors!

On our way to the Kiwi Conservation Center, we stopped by to witness Pohutu - the largest active geyser in the Southern hemisphere that shoots water up to 30 meters in the air. Just wow!

The Kiwi bird is a national symbol of NZ and where New Zealanders get their nickname from. It stands for humility and sacrifice.

Kiwis are also nocturnal birds and very sensitive to light, so we couldn’t show you inside their habitat. Unfortunately, New Zealand loses about 2% of the Kiwi population every year, putting the bird on the list of endangered species.

The second part of the Te Puia experience included a tour of the volcanic plateau, geysers, bubbling mud, and geothermal formations. We enjoyed every minute of learning about the chemical processes, the natural history of the area, its formation, and its influence on the rich Maori culture.

We loved the spectacular views and appreciated the warmth but weren’t keen on the sulfur smell :-) At times it even felt like we were walking on the Moon!

Believe it or not, the steam was so hot that they even used it to cook fish, vegetables, meat, and seafood.

Our guide steamed some sweet pudding that doubled as a birthday cake for Angelique. She definitely didn’t expect such a big b-day party!

An interesting fact we learned was that there was only one native Maori language, spoken in different dialects. The Maori also worshiped the same deities, which helped avoid religious wars.

It seemed like everywhere we went in Rotorua, we experienced something extraordinary, and Te Puia just added an extra unique experience to the list.

We did a little more sightseeing around the volcanic area on our own, and we ran into a display with the recently launched Maori emojis.

Julia and Chantal also had fun pronouncing Te WhakarewarewatangaOTeOpeTauaAWahiao - one of the longest Maori words we have ever seen.

On our way out, we shopped for souvenirs to remind us of our visit to Te Puia and had the warmest farewell greeting in Maori.

Overall, it was a wonderful birthday experience for Angelique!

We can’t wait to show you more of our Rotorua adventures. Stay tuned for upcoming videos.

local People from New Zealand (Kiwi and Maori)

local People from New Zealand (Kiwi and Maori)
Travel Videos (Subscribe Now) ????
The word Maori can have several meanings. Firstly, it can be used to refer to members of the ethnic Maori, the first people to settle in New Zealand. Secondly, it is the informal name for the Maori language, which is called “Te Reo” among Maori speakers. Thirdly, the word Maori in Te Reo literally translates into English as “common people.” Unlike the Aborigines, the Maori tribes in New Zealand had a common language which made it easier for them to develop a collective Maori identity in response to British colonization during the 19th century. Usually, Maori is spelled with a macron above the “a” but many websites including Quora lack that function.

The word Kiwi has two meanings. It can refer to the Kiwi bird, a flightless bird native to New Zealand. Kiwi is derived from the “keewee” cries made by the bird. Secondly, it can be an informal colloquialism referring to New Zealanders just like Aussies, Yanks, Brits, and Canucks. Kiwi is a broad term used to describe all New Zealanders regardless of their ethnic background including Maori, Pakeha/Europeans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Africans, Arabs, etc.

As Judi Joubert rightfully pointed out, kiwifruit is never used to refer to Kiwis. They are simply called kiwifruits. The term kiwi simply applies to humans and birds.

Māori - The indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand

This is not my text! But it fits perfect.

Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand, and their story is both long and intriguing. On the basis of oral records, archaeological finds and genetic analyses, historical treatises place the arrival of Maori in New Zealand in the thirteenth century AD.

The origin of Maori has been reliably traced to the islands of Eastern Polynesia, and their journey to New Zealand occurred in a number of epic waka (canoe) voyages over a significant period of time. These journeys established Maori as daring and resourceful adventurers, and as one of the greatest navigating peoples of all time.
Maori Culture

Contemporary Maori culture has been shaped by the traditions of its rich cultural heritage, with an outward view of the challenges faced by indigenous peoples in a global society.

Defining aspects of Maori culture include art, legend, tattoo (moko), performances (notably kapa haka), customs, hospitality and community. Since the early 1980s Maori culture has undergone a renaissance. The regeneration of interest in Maori culture has extended to language, and Maori language programs (such as kohanga reo) are now flourishing.

Please take some time to explore this website and learn more about this fascinating and vibrant culture.

A note by me:
I deeply respect this culture and i don't want to be disrespectful to the Māori!
If there's something that has to be deleted, please let me know.
Humbly,
Heiko
