Amazing weather led us to take a boat trip, go snorkelling, hiking and visit some great places of interest in the area!

The 74 Whitsunday Islands lie between the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef, a massive stretch of coral teeming with marine life. Most of the islands are uninhabited. They're characterized by dense rainforest, hiking trails and white sand beaches. The town of Airlie Beach on the mainland is the region's central hub.Skipper-yourself “bareboat” sailing is popular for island-hopping. Whitehaven Beach, on Whitsunday Island, may be the best known beach of the Whitsundays, for its pure white silica sand. Many of the other islands serve as day-trip, camping, snorkelling or diving destinations and are protected parkland. Only a few have accommodations, including Hamilton Island, known for its high-end beach resorts, watersports and golf. From Airlie Beach, a range of tours are on offer, including helicopter and seaplane flights with aerial views of the Whitsunday Islands and farther out to sea, the Great Barrier Reef.

The Whitsundays lie in the tropics and have warm days year-round. Summers (Dec–Feb) have intense sunshine and afternoon thunderstorms, while the winter (Jun–Aug) is cooler and drier. The islands are popular all year, with peak travel coinciding with school holidays (Dec–Jan, Easter, Jul–Aug). Airlie Beach hosts 2 major events in Aug: the Airlie Beach Race Week, which draws competitive sailors, and the Whitsunday Reef Festival, featuring street parties and fireworks.
