During my last visit to this 64-year old eatery for breakfast, I learnt there were a bunch of popular dishes that were served only in the evening. And so when the opportunity to return to Gurudatta Bhavan, Hubli, presented itself on our recent drive to Goa, we jumped at the opportunity to savour these scrumptious snacks, some that though with roots far removed from the city have somehow come together in interesting avatars that the denizens of this city have fallen in love with over the decades. Established in 1940, Suvarna Mandir is perhaps Hubballi’s oldest restaurant, if not the oldest. Located amidst the hustle and bustle of Durgadbail market, it’s quite easy to miss the tiny doorway that opens into a courtyard setting in an ancient home from nearly a century ago. Looked after by third generation custodian Mr. Prakash Bhatt, when asked if he was the owner, replied that he was merely taking care of the space like his grandfather and father had before him, this eatery’s charming old school disposition extends to the fare that is served here. Misal, aloo bonda, poori bhaji, madke kaalu, etc. typical Hubli vegetarian breakfast snack fare, but one that is steeped in nostalgia for the locals, and reminiscent of old-fashioned goodness if you happen to be a visitor like me. In 2001, Mrs. Radha Bhat began a small eatery on the terrace of her home in Vidya Nagar, Hubballi to serve simple, fresh fare to students and working professionals in the neighbourhood who were yearning for home cooked meals. Slowly, but surely, the reputation of her Konkani seafood preparations, the fish sourced from the coastal town of Honnavar, began to travel, attracting not just those in the area but also visitors from far flung cities and towns in North Karnataka. Staffed only by women barring Mrs. Bhatt’s husband and son, Only Fish is a definite must-visit when in the city for its Konkani homestyle seafood fare served at extremely economical prices, as I discovered one rainy evening. Served in traditional homes of the Savaji community, almost hidden away in tiny bylanes of the city, the dishes are cooked by the women of the house and served exclusively by the menfolk. In this episode, we venture out to Nakod Savaji Khanavali in Durgadbail, and are rewarded with a delicious mutton meal, notwithstanding the seemingly brusque welcome and service ritual that only goes to reinforce the fact that it is all about the food here! Over 40 years ago, Mr. Chandrashekar, originally from Sasthan in Dakshina Kannada, had to wind up his long running restaurant in Shimoga during the emergency. Forced to once again begin from scratch, he chose a spot in Birur, then a sleepy village around 240 kilometres from Bengaluru to set up an eatery. Since then Birur has grown to a bustling trading town, the spot where his venture, Preethi Canteen stands, is now a busy highway. And this tiffin restaurant has been elevated to legendary status by its many patrons for whom a halt here is a must when on the road around here. Over time, I have received many requests to taste their iconic masala dosae, and so on a recent drive to Shimoga, I stopped here and caught not just a taste of their tasty fare, but also a conversation with its second generation owner, Mr. Prakash Holla on what makes Preethi Canteen a hugely popular culinary institution.
