REUNION ISLAND: Ultimate Travel Guide to VOLCANOES & BEACHES in the Indian Ocean

This is the French paradise in Africa! Far away in the Indian Ocean is an incredible nature paradise island called La Réunion. Between Mauritius and Madagascar, this island has crazy white beaches, stunning volcanic landscapes, lush waterfalls and cosy colonial towns.

During our two week family holiday full of sun, beaches, hikes and great food, I show you all the highlights of La Réunion and all the top sights. At the airport in Saint-Denis we rent a car and drive to Boucan Canot, a hotspot near the best beaches. We visit the best snorkeling spot at Plage de l'Hermitage and drive down south to Saint-Pierre. We visit the volcanos at Piton de la Fournaise and see the best jungle waterfall Cascade de Grand Galet. Of course we brought the drone for perfect 4K footage. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Reunion Island!

In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on for a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. After the Kruger Park, we fly out of Johannesburg to take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Réunion.

Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. La Réunion is already destination number 26, after Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mauritius. We have also been away from home for one and a half year now. Follow us on this world tour, now in La Réunion and then to many more beautiful destinations across the globe! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

How much it costs to live on La Réunion

It is time to talk about money or how much it costs to live on La Réunion. I know that the prices on this remotest part of the European Union will be higher than in Germany. Many products however shocked me because many were 4 times as expensive as back home. This is just an overview what I paid however have in mind that my diet may different from yours or that prices are completely different after Covid-times.

Flights
During Covid19 everything changed, planning was a nightmare because you never knew if regulations change and if you are allowed to travel after all. So I booked my flights 3 weeks prior to depature. I paid 440€ for an Air France flight from Paris to La Réunion. October to December usually are the highseason on the island so it could cost easily double in non-pandemic times.

Accomodation
I only lived in AirBnbs because it felt like the most reliable option for me and my limited French skills. The reason why I speak about different prices per night is that I sometimes didn’t include the service fees that apply additional to the price per night that is shown on AirBnb.
If you want to stay in one place for several weeks on the island have a look for Facebook groups. I was part of one for Expats and there cheaper apartments/rooms were shared. The area between Saint Paul and Saint Pierre is the most expensive part. The higher you go the cheaper it gets. The south was pretty cheap compared to the other parts of the island.
Here is what I paid:
Apartment in Boucan Canot just 3 Min walk from the beach 60€/night
Room with bathroom in Saint Gilles-les-Haut with shared pool 32€/night
Apartment in Vincendo with own garden and seaview 26€/night

Car
I organized the car rental before I came to La Réunion but it should be easy to organize a car as soon as you get there. I paid the same as people who organized a car after they arrived. The prices start from 27€/day. I paid 31€ because I didn’t take the smallest car and wanted a full insurance.

Groceries
You get quite a lot of things in the supermarket however the prices are very high because most thing are imported and I heard about a special French fee for oversea departments. Beside the roads there are often stands which sell produce. It is a little bit cheaper there than in the supermarkets but still way more expensive than in Germany. Even the local fruits that have season aren’t cheaper.
Here are the products that were way more expensive than in Germany:
Bell pepper 200g 3€, Toast, 4,5€, Blueberries 7€, pack of cigarettes 11-14€, Sunscreen 300ml 28€, 25 Tide pots 22€, 750ml yoghurt 7€.

Free time activities
The French school was around 360-400€/week depending how long you booked your course for. The dives were around 50€ including all the equipment.

Do you need to speak french to visit La Réunion?

Do you need to speak French on la Réunion? This is a question I will answer in this video as well as what I am doing here.

But first things first. This is not an accurate picture to which amount the people speak French or English on the island. I neither measured anything nor had a look into official numbers. This is only my personal impression after a very short amount of time on the island. I don’t want to judge if it is good or bad if people speak English here or not. I just want to give advice where you might need your French vocabulary.
It could also be different when there is no Corona virus which limits the number of tourists on the island.

I also enjoyed both of my dives at the two diving schools and they tried their best to make my experience as nice as possible. I saw the briefing and debriefing in French as an exercise to practice my newly gained French skills. It was secure for me and will be for non-french divers at all times. I just want to emphasize that an “only French” introduction might not reduce the general nervousness many people have before they dive.
I visit a language school here to learn French because I can not image a nicer place to learn French. I had French already in school but forgot most out of it. It left me with a kind of trauma because I almost had to repeat a class.

Here I am visiting the school DP Langues . I can highly recommend the school (no this is not a paid promotion). I learned a lot and they really have a perfect fitting solution for your current level of French.

1st impression, La Réunion Island, pacific ocean

The most overwhelming France experience I had so far were the 5 days of visiting my boyfriend's family in La Réunion. 12h flight, 5 days on the magnificent island, 12h back to Paris.

I love exploring France and seeing more than just Paris. Paris is great but this island is like a paradise. It feels so French, at the same time so different.

What it's like to TRAVEL to La RÉUNION in times of COVID-19

Here are my thoughts on travelling during the COVID-19 crisis:
Travelling in Corona times is difficult and potentially dangerous to you and others, and I had a lot of concerns before I decided to go on my journey. In my opinion short term travels to La Réunion are a no go in times where the virus spreads faster than ever. In my case I moved for 3 month so I decided to go because I could isolate myself before the flight and after my arrival to keep the risk of spreading the virus to a minimum.
You need to be tested within 72hours prior the departure time of your flight and it is highly recommended that you repeat a test within the first week of your arrival.
Travelling to la Réunion is still possible but needs some preparation in advance. Beside the requirements for the flight you also need to think of possible lockdown situations during your stay. How will you supply yourself in case of a closing of all the restaurants? Is your health insurance covering a COVID-19 treatment abroad? Is my accommodation suitable for a lockdown?
With this careful preparation it is possible to move abroad at the moment. If you just plan to go on holiday to La Réunion I would advise you to wait until Corona infections went down again and it is safer and easier to go.
For me it turned out that La Réunion is a lot safer in Corona times than staying in Muni due to its remote location in the Indian ocean and the strict test requirements for travelling here.

Interesting facts about La Reunion (island)

Interesting facts about La Reunion (island off the coast of Madagascar).

You Should Visit Reunion Island For This

Why are the French building a road around the island Reunion is a piece of France in the Indian Ocea

Reunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean and representing French territory, is not very well known in our country, although this place is extremely interesting.

Why does Reunion Island choose to remain a French territory?

Have you heard of Reunion Island? Reunion is a tiny island off the East African coast that is part of France’s overseas territories. Its neighbours, Madagascar to the West and Mauritius to the Northeast are both independent nations. So why has this African Island not gained its independence? And has it ever pushed for independence in the first place?

To understand why Reunion has not sought independence, we have to understand its history. We have to go back to the very beginning.

Arab traders may have spotted the island while sailing from Madagascar to Malaysia but did not set foot in it because of its hostile volcanic activity. Diego Fernandez Pereira, a Portuguese sailor passed by the island in 1507 and named it Santa Apollonia but the first recorded visitors to set foot on the island were British sailors. They described it as a paradise of parrots and turtles. The animals were described as being unafraid of humans, probably because this was their first time encountering them. The island’s fishing grounds were so abundant that its birds were so obese from their catch; they could not fly and could barely walk.

After this, both the Dutch and French tried unsuccessfully to settle on the island. The French later named it L’ile Bourbon after France’s royal family’s name. The settlements never took root because settlers preferred Madagascar.

Finally, in 1664, the French king gave ownership of the island to the French East India Company. About 600 settlers including freed slaves forced into exile moved to Bourbon Island. They grew tobacco, pistachios, peanuts, and cotton and reared cows and goats. Its population remained tiny until 1716.

In 1716, coffee was introduced to the island by the company. To encourage new settlers who would increase the profitable coffee yield, the French East India Company offered free land to French citizens willing to settle on the island. Slaves from India, and Africa, especially Madagascar were also brought to the island to cultivate the crop. To add to this melting pot were the sailors from other parts of the world who settled on the island. This melting pot of races is still seen on the island today.

Later the French East Indian Company collapsed and the island fell directly under the French government once more. Coffee was replaced by sugarcane as the main cash crop. Because cane is labor intensive and more slaves were brought to Bourbon Island. This also led to smaller settlers losing their land to richer families who needed large tracts of land to grow it. This increased the gap between the rich and the poor on the island and its repercussions are still felt to this day.

In 1792, the French monarchy fell as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were imprisoned and later beheaded. The island was renamed Reunion Island after the union of the revolutionaries and the National Guard in Paris. The island's name changed again to Bonaparte Island during Napoleon's reign in France.

More change was to come to the tiny island when the British annexed it from France in 1810, and it reverted to Reunion Island. 4 years later, after fierce fighting the French got the island back, but it remained Reunion.
