Remember the handsome Chaiwala who went viral around the world in 2016? That was Arshad Khan from Pakistan. I went to Islamabad to find out what he's doing now and to of course try his famous Karak Chai.
Since rising to fame, he's worked in modelling and TV. Now he's gone back to his roots by launching Chaiwala Cafe in Islamabad. Make sure you try his famous Arshad Khan Karak Chai ₹60 and the juicy Malai Chicken Boti ₹499. Skip the Beef Paratha ₹299 - it's not good.

What's a Chaiwala in Pakistan Like?
Chaiwale (tea makers) in Pakistan are very different from the rest of the world! You have to see the unique style that Chaiwale have in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa!
There are two varieties of tea available. Chai (milk tea) or Kahwa (green tea). Both are sweet and boiled freshly in front of you in your own little green teapot.
In Pakistan, they generally don't use masala (spices) in their chai. They have it plain. Sometimes they'll add elichi (cardamom), but I never really tasted it when drinking.

Pakistani CHAIWALA Teaches Me How to Make CHAI
A Pakistani chaiwala gave me a masterclass in how to make authentic Pakistani chai (milk tea). He's a Tea Master from Quetta in Balochistan and I think he makes the best chai in Pakistan! I ate at his Dhaba (roadside restaurant) every morning while I was in Islamabad.
Chai master, Mr Karim Ullah, gives us his full recipe and tells us the secrets of creating the best chai. It's all about the ingredients and quality of the tea! He doesn't use store brought tea; he has his specially made. That's why it's so hard to recreate such an amazing chai at home.
Authentic Pakistani Chai Recipe from a Chai Master
Ingredients
- 1 mug of full cream milk (cheaper milk in the supermarket won’t cut it, you need to buy the most natural and unprocessed milk you can find. Ideally Buffalo milk if available.)
- 2 tsp white sugar
- 1.5 tsp black tea (ideally Tapal Danedar if you can find it! It’s not Pakistani chai if you’re not using Pakistani tea leaves.)
Recipe
1. Bring milk to nearly boiling. Stir so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot.
2. Add sugar. Stir while it’s dissolving.
3. Add tea. Stir and let it boil up 3 or 4 times.
4. Pour from a height through a strainer to get those creamy air bubbles on top.
If you're looking for a good tea, try Tapal Danedar. It's got a strong taste, and it's what I use. It's impossible to get the exact same flavour tea as what you'll find at his cafe though, unfortunately.

I take you through a traditional market in a very traditional part of Pakistan - Peshawar. We experience the food, fashion, locals, and the beautiful old-school style Chaiwalas serving Peshawari Green Tea (Kehwa).
Chitrali Bazaar is a feast for the eyes! It's full of hundreds of stores selling winter fashion from Chitral. There's hats (Pakol), shawls (Chaadar), waistcoats, and all sorts of warm fashion items for Men and Women. I bought a traditional Pakol for Rs. 1200 ($8). Shawls are Rs. 3500 ($21). You'll see Men all over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa wearing these.

Eating Literally on the Street in Pakistan
I was amazed to find that in Peshawar people literally eat ON the street. So I joined in with the locals in Peshawar to try real Pakistani street feed. Afterwards, I take you for a tour of a traditional Chaiwala (tea maker) - it's quite different to India.
This small food street is located at Khyber Bazaar next to HBL Khyber Bazar There they serve Chole, Rajma, Paye, Kheleji, and Naan. A full meal with bread costs just Rs. 100 (62 cents)!
A few lanes down you'll find the Chaiwala I visited and can have a Kahwa (Peshawari green tea) or Chai - I don't know the price because a kind local paid for my chai.
As you can see from the area, it was quite clean, as was the food. I had no stomach issues after eating there. I absolutely loved the street food in Pakistan and when you visit, you should try it too - if your stomach can handle it.

When you visit India or Pakistan you'll see chai makers (chaiwale) on every street corner. And you're probably wondering, is it safe to drink from these street vendors? Well, the answer is yes as long as your tea is served hot and you've seen the chef boiling it.
Want to see how chai is made in Pakistan?
This was filmed at a little chaiwala alleyway that I drunk chai daily from in Lahore. It's located across the road from Hafeez Centre down the alleyway from Food Point Their exact location is not on Google Maps.
Here's the exact advice from WHO, Hot beverages such as coffee and tea are often made with boiled water and are therefore usually safe.

Balakot... This Is What I Found ????????
Yup, I went to the now infamous #Balakot. I travelled from #Abbottabad through #Mansehra then along the Kunhar River to beautiful Balakot. Balakot will surprise you will it's epic scenery, street food, and hospitality. This is a good-old small town in #Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.
Once there, I explored this little town 50km from the LOC, and I ate two things: Shami Burger and Chapli Kebab. And of course 2 cups of #chai. Chai was Rs. 20 (₹9) per cup, Chapli Kebab with 1 Naan was Rs. 50 (₹22). I totally forget the price of the Shami Burger - it was probably Rs. 50 too.

Delhi Locals Won't Let Me Pay for Ginger Chai ????????
I visited the Sarojini Nagar Market in South Delhi and saw a chaiwala making what I thought was masala chai (spicy tea) but it was in fact ginger tea.
The chai is 10 rupees each and I tried to pay for myself and 4 others using a 50 rupee note, just to make things easier, as I wouldn't have a free hand to accept change. But the locals refused to accept me paying for them and instead insisted that they pay for me.

Project Chaiwala is the brainchild of two chai enthusiasts who worked in one of the skyscrapers in Dubai. They were colleagues who worked in the financial sector.
