Surviving Robbery, Extortion, Censorship In Congo ???????? DRC (#177)
Congo. The heart of Africa. A tragic, wartorn country that's never able to live up to it's potential. Due to it's turbulent past with brutal colonization by the Belgians under King Leopold, and also it's more violent recent history involving it's African neighbors, Congo is very wary of outsiders. It's extremely difficult to enter the country -- and also expensive. Something they don't tell you in any guidebook is the amount of money you need to prepare for bribes on the border.
Maybe I wasn't ready for the Congo DRC. I had always wanted to visit. I knew the country was home to beautiful jungles, mountains and rivers, and much of it was unknown. It's Africa's superstate: the country stretches from Tanzania in the east, almost to Nigeria in the west, and Zambia in the south. And it was on Congo's curiously shaped southern border that I decided to enter the country. I wanted to go to Lubumbashi, Congo's second largest city and a megacity in it's own right.
I had no idea just how insane the experience was going to be once I got there.

How Safe Is Democratic Republic of the Congo for Travel?
Full safety review:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo often referred to as its abbreviation – DRC or D.R. Congo is the single largest and most populous country in Central Africa.
This country has suffered tragic times and has had an extremely tumultuous history.
The presence of armed troupes makes it dangerous for tourists to visit DRC currently.
However, those who manage to enter DRC and are brave enough to spend some time here, are definitely in for an adventure.
Overall DRC isn't a safe destination for travelers. You should know that many governments advise their citizens not to travel to the country as it is considered very high risk. Be very aware of your surroundings at all times. Both petty and violent crimes are normal here.
What I learned in the Congo
This past summer I traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to produce a documentary short about a medical clinic being built by a nonprofit in Kinshasa. Getting to travel to the Congo was definitely an eye opening experience and perspective shaping experience! I'm super grateful for the opportunity and thought I'd what I learned with you :)

When I got a message on Instagram about 6 weeks ago from a guy named Obed, who invited me to visit his country - the Democratic Republic of Congo -- I nearly looked past it.
But as I was already planning to go there, I took him up on the offer and l did I know we'd have the most amazing week together!!!
Obed's story is incredible inspiring -- a refugee turned entrepreneur -- so it was only natural for me to share it with the world.

The Journey To Congo ????????⇨???????? (#79)
In western Rwanda lies Lake Kivu, which marks the border between Rwanda and the DRC (Congo). Not too long ago, it was possible to easily cross the border at Gisenyi and spend a day or 2 in neighboring Goma. But these days the border, like everything else, has become a complicated mess. One day, after downing a few glasses of the local Gwagwa moonshine, I decided I would walk all the way to the border and try to sweet talk my way in. This is the record of that journey.
