What to eat in Luxembourg City? Luxembourg foods you need to try!

The old fortress of Luxembourg City is a great place to explore, with the towering city walls, tunnels built into the rock, and amazing views. But as you adventure around the city, you're going to need something to eat, right? In this video I'll show you some great Luxembourgish foods that you should definitely try well you're there. Because it's a small country, Luxembourg foods often don't have the same name recognition as foods from their bigger neighbors. So I'll tell you about five great foods that I think are definitely worth sampling. I'll cover some really hearty meals like Judd mat Gaardenbonen, Kniddelen mat Speck, and Bouneschlupp. I'll also talk about a two street/snack foods: Gromperekichelecher and Mettwurst. Make sure to bring your appetite because I found them all very filling.

What do people in Luxembourg Eat? | Food Tour | Gromperekichelcher, Feiersténgszalot, & Verwurelter!

During our visit to Luxembourg, we just scratched the surface when it comes to food. We passed up on some of the more flashy and popular foods to eat in the area, and tried to find some foods that are more traditional to the area. Were we expecting to eat a cold potato pancake, meat salad, and a donut?.... Definitely not! But the experience still memorable and fun to try some quick bites while we explored one of the world's most wealthy countries.

best street food in luxembourg perfect street food in luxembourg top 5 street food in luxembourg

Luxembourg offers a diverse range of street food options that reflect its multicultural influences. Here are a few popular street food dishes you can find in Luxembourg:

Gromperekichelcher: Gromperekichelcher, also known as potato pancakes or latkes, are a common street food in Luxembourg. These crispy potato fritters are made with grated potatoes, onions, and various seasonings. They are typically served hot and can be enjoyed on their own or with a side of applesauce.

Hot Dogs: Luxembourg has a strong American influence, and you'll find food trucks and stands serving classic American-style hot dogs. These are usually topped with a variety of condiments such as mustard, ketchup, onions, sauerkraut, and relish.

Fritkot: Fritkots are small stands or food trucks specializing in Belgian-style fries, known as frites. These fries are thick-cut and crispy, served with a variety of dipping sauces like mayonnaise, ketchup, or samurai sauce. You can often find fritkots scattered around Luxembourg City, offering a quick and delicious snack.

Waffles: Waffles are a popular street food in Luxembourg, influenced by neighboring Belgium. These sweet treats are served hot and fresh, with a variety of toppings such as powdered sugar, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, or fresh fruits.

Bretzels: Bretzels, or pretzels, are another popular street food option. These soft and chewy baked goods are often sprinkled with coarse salt and can be enjoyed plain or with mustard as a dip.

These are just a few examples of street food options you can find in Luxembourg. The country's diverse culinary scene ensures that there is something to suit every palate, whether you're looking for traditional Luxembourgish specialties or international flavors.

LUXEMBOURG TRAVEL | Highlights of Luxembourg Country + Travel Itinerary

The country of Luxembourg is situated in western Europe and borders Belgium, France, and Germany. With an area of 2,586 square kilometers (998 sq mi), Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in all of Europe. But in spite of its size, this country has deep historical roots and offers a lot of diversity. From the rocky gorges in the east to the river valleys in the north and medieval towns with castles perched in between. We’ll now dive into our top 7 interesting places to visit and things to do in the country of Luxembourg.

7. Echternach
Echternach is located in the east of Luxembourg, right next to the German border. It is known as the oldest town in the country, dating back to the end of the 7th century when the Abbey of Echternach was established. Today, you can find a lovely open square, beautiful historical buildings (including the Abbey of Echternach, the adjoined Basilica of Saint Willibrord, the Roman Villa and the Orangery), and cute restaurants. This town makes for a great stop while exploring the countryside, or as a base to explore the unspoilt Mullerthal Region.

6. Mullerthal
The Mullerthal Region itself is probably the most unique area in all of Luxembourg. With an abundance of mysterious caves, small waterfalls, dense forests, and sandstone rock formations, this region is best explored on foot. Experienced hikers can tackle the challenging 112 km (70mi) Mullerthal Trail. But if you just have a few hours or a day, we recommend hiking shorter trails (i.e. Schiessentümpel waterfalls, Huel Lee Cave, Kallektuffquell).

5. Esch-sur-Sûre
Situated in a river valley in north-western Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Sûre is one of the tiniest villages in the country. Here, it seems as if time has stood still. You can see the remains of an old castle on the hill, with narrow streets surrounding it.

4. Clervaux
Located in northern Luxembourg, Clervaux is another countryside town that is worth a visit. Not only is it home to the beautiful Clervaux castle, but you can also walk here in the surrounding forests and hills or explore the small town center and nearby Abbey.

3. Bourscheid
Bourscheid is a small town in north-eastern Luxembourg, known for the country’s largest and most dramatic castle. But besides that, this village is located right next to the river and surrounded by rolling, green hills. Thus, it’s a great place for camping, swimming, and hiking. The long-distance Escapardenne Lee Trail runs through this area, and offers breathtaking views of the river valley (Gringlay View Point).

2. Vianden
Vianden is our favorite town in all of Luxembourg. Located in a valley along the Our River, this village enjoys an idyllic setting. But its main attraction is undoubtedly the Vianden Castle, which has been beautifully restored since 1977 when it passed into state ownership. You can easily combine a visit to the castle with a stroll through the town or a scenic ride on the chairlift.

1. Luxembourg City
Luxembourg City is the vibrant, cultural capital city of the country with an interesting layout. The city is divided into two sections: the High City (Ville Haute), which is the medieval town center situated on a cliff face, and the Low City (Ville Basse), which is located in the ravine that runs through the city.

10 Things To Do In Luxembourg City | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:

Well, welcome to Luxembourg! The only Grand Duchy in the world. Over the next few days we're going to be exploring the capital of Luxembourg City and this is going to be a little city guide to show you some of the highlights.

Located smack dab in between Germany, France, and Belgium, the little Grand Duchy of Luxembourg can be easy to miss if you're not looking carefully, however, we're of the opinion that this is a beautiful destination that you'll definitely want to make time for. From picturesque neighbourhoods with cream coloured walls, to dazzling views of blue rooftops in the Old Town below, Luxembourg City is a charming destination that you'll want to add to your European itinerary.

So this hear is the Corniche and it is a pedestrian promenade which has been called the most beautiful balcony in all of Europe because it gets some spectacular views of the old town.

So we are now entering the Bock Casemates and apparently this was the old fortification of Luxemborg and it was known as the Gibraltar of the north.

This was once one of the most envied fortresses in all of Europe.

Right now we're visiting the Three Towers which are remnants of an old fortress.

We've been walking around a neighborhood called the Grund which is directly below the city center. And it is really picturesque and without tourists.

So behind me we have Saint Michael's church which is the oldest church in Luxembourg. The first church to be built on this spot dates back to the year 987, however, the church was destroyed, rebuilt, and renovated many times over the centuries.

The Palace houses the Grand Duke's office and during the summer months.

There is no shortage of museums in Luxembourg City, so we took some time to visit the National Museum of Art and History.

We are now looking at the Passerelle which is Luxembourg's very own viaduct.

So we are now standing in William Square which is a really popular spot on Sundays and Wednesdays because local vendors setup shop and they sell all kinds of things from fresh produce, to flowers, street snacks.

So final thoughts of Luxembourg. Alright, to wrap things up here it was a really cool city. It is the type of city that you can explore in just one or two days. A weekend type of destination because a lot of the attractions are nearby one another. And we just found it a very easy city to get around in on foot.

So as a little travel tip if you're planning on being in the city for a few days we really recommend the Luxembourg Card. This is what we used while we were here and it is really good for public transportation across the city. Across the country actually and you also get access to seventy different galleries, museums, historic attractions and it is not that expensive. I mean it depends on whether you get a family or an individual card but we really recommend it because we made a lot of use of it.

Our visit to Luxembourg City was short and sweet, but we hope this video gave you a little taste of what it's like. Now it's your turn: have you ever been to Luxembourg? If so, feel free to share some of your tips in the comments below.

This is part of our Travel in Luxembourg series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Luxembourg culture, Luxembourg foods & Luxembourg cuisine.
