Travel Guide to Antigua/Guatemala

In this Guatemala and Antigua travel video guide, I head down to Guatemala and explore scenic Antigua, hike Volcano Pacaya, take a road trip to Lake Atitlan (and ride a horse along its banks), then head north to Tikal, home to the capital of the once mighty Mayan Empire, where I climb the many temples that have been discovered at the site.

I started by having a delicious breakfast at the Real Intercontinental Guatemala and some fantastic coffee. From their we drove one hour south to Antigua. We partnered up with A La Carta Tours and Antigua Rides to give us this unreal food tour of Antigua.

We started by heading to the neighborhood of San Juan del Obispo. Their we saw a 15th century church and had some Chuchitos (Guatemalan version of Tamales). They were spicy and delicious!

Next up we entered Chocolateria Antigua to see how they turn Cacao into chocolate bars. We then tried 13 different chocolates. They were all so good! I had to buy myself some.

From their we walked down the street to El Abuelo del Vino which is a fruit fermenting factory. They ferment over 40 different fruits and turn them into fruit wine. We saw the process and tried a dozen very strong wines!

After that we drove across town to Cerro de la Cruz to get an incredible view over the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Antigua. To end the tour we hit up La Cuevita de los Urquizu to have a truly unique Guatemalan meal. When you visit Antigua you have to eat here!

Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours: and Antigua Rides

Big thanks to my friends at the Real Intercontinental Guatemala:

Antigua, Guatemala is a city in Guatemala with so much history and beautiful architecture. As soon as you enter Antigua, the first thing you'll notice are the colorful buildings. I was fortunate enough to do this walking tour and this volunteer trip right before the volcano erupted. Although I was safe, many locals were affected and have become victims to this tragedy. I was able to see Antigua through the eyes of a local with our guide Diego, who was born in Antigua. He showed us the lookout point where we could see the best views of all of Antigua, Guatemala. I had an amazing time with Hopscotch the Globe and Vivid Roots as we got to know Antigua a little bit better, before continuing on our volunteer trip.

Solo Female Travel - Antigua, Guatemala

My first time in Guatemala was so awesome! I visited Antigua and spent the last few days of 2016 exploring this laid-back, beautiful, colourful cobble-stoned town that is surrounded by volcanoes. I rang in the New Year 2017 in Antigua and climbed Pacaya volcano for a challenging hike up and back down. While walking the streets there I knew I wanted to go back one day and explore Guatemala even further. I found the place very relaxing and was able to unwind with other travelers.

This solo trip to Mexico City and Guatemala was unforgettable and I encourage you to get out there, solo or not, and travel this incredible world. Thank you for watching and make sure to subscribe to watch my future travel adventures!

AMAZING Guatemalan STREET FOOD + Antigua Walking Tour | Antigua, Guatemala

On my third day in Guatemala in partnership with the Real Intercontinental Guatemala we explored Antigua's main attractions and we ate some amazing Guatemalan street food!

We started our exploration of Antigua by walking through the historical center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Antigua. We first saw La Carmen Convent ruins, then we went to La Perla to have a quick espresso and then we visited La Merced Church.

From there we made our way across the city and stopped at Santa Catalina Arch which is the icon of Antigua. It's a a 15 century arch built to help the nuns cross from the convent to a school. Next up we saw the Antigua Cathedral ruins. It was destroyed during an earthquake in the year 1773.

We then made a quick stop at La Casa del Ron and tried some amazing Zacapa rums. We tried Zacapa 23, Zacapa Negro and we tried a Colonial rum which is an artisan rum made by the Zacapa brand.

To end the night we headed to the public laundry square and there, there is a lady selling amazing Guatemalan street food. I tried four different things:
-Chuchitos
-Alot del Elote
-Rellenitos de Platano
-Tostada de Ensalada de Pollo

Each thing was amazing and I highly recommend visiting that lady when you head to Antigua. She gets there around 5:30pm.

Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours:

Travel Guatemala | SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER | Ep. 40 | Antigua

Backpacked from San Pedro Lake Atítlan back to the traveler backpacker mecca Antigua, Guatemala. It felt good to be back in this beautiful Guatemalan colonial town! I was trying to come up with a travel plan for the upcoming days before traveling into El Salvador with a shuttle from Antigua. Most people skip El Salvador but I definitely wanted to see El Salvador's beaches, lakes, mountains, volcanoes and its natural beauty. Although I was a girl traveling alone, I didn't feel scared but more like excited to see a new country!

Solo female backpacker's travel documentary on Mexico, Central America & South America. Showing how to travel cheap in Latin America through hitchhiking, Couchsurfing and WorkAway. Adventure started in April 2017 - Hey! Let's Go Get Lost!

4K City Walks: Antigua, Guatemala 360 - old colonial city at foot of volcanos

City Walks: Antigua, Guatemala old colonial city at foot of volcanos

Many people go to Antigua Guatemala for the language schools. We went to hike up a volcano and see some history. Also because we got in late and it's close to Guatemala City. There is a lot of Mayan influence and culture all over Guatemala. I was impressed by the ordered chaos everywhere. The weather was hot and I like the bustle of mornings in a city so I walked fairly early. I started at our hostel, La Quinta, but there are many very nice hotels in Antigua if you are looking for accommodation in this small historic town.

Antigua Guatemala (Spanish pronunciation: [anˈtiɣwa ɣwateˈmala]) (commonly referred to as just Antigua or la Antigua) is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture as well as a number of ruins of colonial churches. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Antigua Guatemala serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. It also serves as the departmental capital of Sacatepéquez Department.
The city had a peak population of some 60,000 in the 1770s; the bulk of the population moved away in the late 18th century. Despite significant population growth in the late 20th century, the city had only reached half that number by the 1990s. At the time of the 2007 census, the city had 34,685 inhabitants

BLOG POST:

If you have seen my other videos in Antigua, Guatemala, you will notice that there are volcanoes surrounding the town of Antigua. Two main ones. One that looks like the mountain in Zelda Ocarina of Time, with the perfect ring of smoke over the top at all times. Then there is another, more in the distance, but visible from a lot of the rooftops, including the one at my hostel, which is still very active. In fact, a couple mornings when I was working from my laptop, enjoying the cool air and relaxed vibe of Antigua, I heard it go off in the distance. I will post that video.

Anyways, before I continue this description, if you are looking for those videos on the the walkaround Antigua, Guatemala, and the viewpoint over Antigua, Guatemala, then check the links below. Keep reading!

Tour of Antigua, Guatemala:
Viewpoint over Antigua, Guatemala:

One of the many things to do in Antigua, Guatemala is one of the volcano hikes. There is Pacaya Volcano which is a morning hike, or a afternoon hike that will take, including driving about 5 hours. There is also the Acatenango hike which is a longer, more gruelling hike that you spent the night on the side of the mountain hoping to get a view of the erupting volcano and hopefully, of a beautiful view at sunrise. As you will read in the BLOG LINK above about the hike up Pacaya Volcano, but I chose this one because of the conditions and reviews I heard of Acatenango. I heard it was an incredible hike, but the tours around the time I was planning to go, had poor weather conditions. As I was planning to leave the following day to El Salvador, I elected for Pacaya Volcano.

A few hour drive outside of Antigua, and about an easy hour hike up the side of the volcano you reach the open summit where you get a terrific view of the neighbouring volcano, Pacaya. We did the night hike so as you will see we got a beautiful sunset and walked down in the pitch black!

Make sure to SUBSCRIBE and check out the other videos from before, the travel videos to come and more volcanoes!!!
