What it's like on the northernmost tip of Japan

Continuing the journey to Cape Soya, the northernmost point in Japan, I woke up at a hostel in Sapporo. I then went to Sapporo Station to ride the Soya limited express train to Wakkanai, the closest city. Along the way, I was treated to a beautiful view of the Hokkaido countryside.

After arriving in Wakkanai Station, I had to quickly board the bus to get to Cape Soya. This was the last bus I could take, because they don't run that often, and it would give me 30 minutes to see the northernmost point of the country. There were lots of different monuments there including the Monument of Peace, the Tower of Prayer, a statue of Mamiya Rinzo, and more.

In the distance you could just make out the Sakahlin Islands, a part of Russia. I saw as much as I could, but the temperature was below freezing, so I took refuge in the bus shelter until the bus arrived.

Afterwards, I got back to a hotel, then checked out the North Breakwater Dome in Wakkanai. Pretty cool structure, and added to the mystique of the frozen landscape. I then had a bowl of ramen at a little restaurant near the station called Hitoshi no Mise.

Then it was time to go to sleep for one last leg of the journey, heading back to Tokyo, but stopping in Sapporo on the way.

What is Japan's Northern tip like? | Journey Around Hokkaido Day 3

Journey around Hokkaido Day 3

Today we travel to the Northern area of Hokkaido known as DoHoku..
From Abashiri to Sounkyo and along the Sea of Okhotsk all the way to Wakkanai.
Cape Soya and the white shell road were both absolutely beautiful. They're only 4km apart so If you happen to plan a trip to Wakkanai, definitely consider visiting both of them.
Sounkyo was great too. I was the type of place that you have to see with your naked eye since I'm sure that the camera definitely didn't do it justice.
Overall, today was a long day/drive but I can assure you it was a fantastic one. Please enjoy watching.

10 Best Places to Visit in Japan - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

With its enormous cities and towering skyscrapers brightly clad in neon lights, Japan is a fun country to visit, full of history and with a rich cultural heritage. Temples and shrines dot its streets, while world-class restaurants rub shoulders with ancient castles and imperial palaces, and its cities bustle with life and energy. Japan is a warm, welcoming and endlessly interesting travel destination with something for everyone. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Japan:

Things you should do - Visit Wakkanai, the northernmost city in Japan

Wakkanai is the northernmost city in Hokkaido and Japan. The North of Hokkaido has struggled economically but it has a certain charm about it. This trip took place in winter in the days after New year's. Probably not the best time to visit as many people are on holiday which makes the city seem even more abandoned.

I recommend visiting Wakkanai and the north of Hokkaido in summer. Winter is ok to visit but be prepared for snowstorms and cold. Have fun though whichever season you go.

Hokkaido | Visually Exploring Japan's Northernmost Coast in Summer [4K]

This video is a bit of a change from what I've posted here previously. I spent 2 weeks camping in Hokkaido in the summer of 2023 and shot a lot of footage along the way.

We start hiking Asahidake, which is Hokkaido's tallest mountain and a semi-active volcano. There are a number of volcanic vents shooting hot gasses into the air, and they sound like jet engines. I hiked up late in the day, and I actually had to hurry a bit to the campsite before the sun set so I didn't film quiet as much as I wanted to, but still some nice views.

Next we pay a quick visit to the islands of Rebun and Rishiri, a few kilometers off the coast of Wakkanai on Hokkaido's north western tip. The islands are on the northern edge of the Sea of Japan, and close together, but very different. It seemed Rebun was an island without shade. There were very few trees on the island, and almost all the buildings are along a coastal road between the sea and rolling grassy hills. On the other hand Rishiri Island is dominated by Rishiri-fuji, a Mt. Fuji lookalike volcano in the center of the island. Like Rebun, the buildings are almost all along the coast, but there was a bit more flat land, and the landscape seemed a bit more lush. I camped at the base of Rishiri-fuji in heavy rain, and it seemed almost like a temperate rain forest.

The next stop on our journey is Cape Soya, the northernmost point in Japan, where the Russian island of Sakhalin can be seen off in the distance. I had a swim event at Lake Kussharo, which is across the island on the north-eastern side, and I was undecided if I should take the somewhat more popular interior road or go along the coast. I decided to go along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, and I'm very glad I did. The landscape was unlike anything I've ever seen in Japan, with beautiful open road, rolling hills, distant mountains, and almost no signs of human development. It really had a wild and untouched feel that I hope I was somewhat able to capture on video. The fog rolling down the coastal mountain was unreal from the ground, and even more spectacular from the air. The weather on the trip changed so quickly, fog, clouds, rain, wind. Very dynamic conditions.

The final stop is Lake Kussharo, which is a beautiful volcanic lake not far from Shiretoko in north-east Hokkaido. I was there in late-August and it was unusually warm, over 30 degrees celsius, so there were still people out enjoying the cool waters from the lake, as well as the warm natural hot springs on its shore.

I didn't intend for this description to go on so long, but I guess in many ways this trip was one of the main motivations for starting this channel. I'm well aware that there are a number of technical issues with the footage, audio, and edit, but I think it's a good starting off point. I'm looking forward to more adventures and being able to share new sights and sounds. Let's see what else is out there!

⑹ We went to the northernmost point in Japan (Cape Soya)

Today I traveled from Asahikawa to Wakkanai via Nayoro, Otoineppu, Horonobe, and to the northernmost point, Cape Soya. It was a long journey but it was an incredible experience. Also Hokkaido was much bigger than I thought. All the snow I saw here can’t been seen in the rest of Japan.

本日は宗谷本線にて、旭川から名寄、音威子府、幌延を経て稚内まで乗車した後、宗谷バスで日本最北端の宗谷岬まで行きました。本当に寒くてキツかったですが、素晴らしい経験ができたと思っております。
