I met up with Duong Nem for a few hours after not seeing him for many months. Our reunion in Saigon was very last minute and unplanned too far in advanced. I only found out that he was in town a day or two before he was scheduled to leave and before I was scheduled to fly to another city. We were very fortunate to see each other and I'm glad I got a chance to meet his family. His story is a little bit complicated. After spending time back in Vietnam, he was wanting to go back to Senegal to work again. Even though he was having a hard time when I came, he ultimately decided that life in Africa was better for him now than life in Vietnam. I want to wish his the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Giap's story is similar to many Viet kieu and Vietnamese overseas abroad. The resilience of the refugee immigration struggle combined with the eventual return home to support family and friends back in the motherland is something that is still on going today. It's an important historical and present sociological aspect of the Vietnamese diaspora that is seldom discussed even though it's apparent i almost every household past or present. Thank you to Giap for sharing his story. If anyone else wants their story told and our schedule aligns, then maybe it'll happen. Heck, Giap just reached out to me one day and I just came over to his house not even knowing a thing. And it turned out to be a great story, but also a great opportunity to share such a life.
Thanks to Giap for the chance to create this video and the main reason why I went back to Vietnam during the summer. When I left in March, I had no plans at all to return during the summer, but meeting him and his enthusiasm for sharing the Vietnamese diaspora and culture and his story made the decision a lot easier. Because of Giap, we have all of these Vietnam videos that I've released in the last few weeks and the next few weeks. Thank you Giap. Meeting one person can definitely change the course of our life. Who knows what's next?

Vietnam will always be on the back of all Vietnamese people living abroad. That's the one thing that all Viet kieu or Vietnamese abroad have in common, whether they are from America, Australia, Germany, Canada, and everywhere in between. Visiting Vietnam and visiting estranged family can be the most rewarding thing in a person's life. Visiting the countryside or the que can lead to new opportunities of self realization or discovery. This is exactly what Ngoc and I felt when we traveled to her birth place in a village not too far from Cat Tien. Everyone watching with family in Vietnam should go visit their family whenever they get the chance.

Vietnamese New Years TET EXPLAINED by Kyle Le
Kyle Le's Tet. Some call it Lunar New Year, others call it Chinese New Years, but I tend to call it Tet or Vietnamese New Years. This year I made it a point to spend it with my family and I wanted to share my experience with you. In this video I covered the basics of new clothes, lucky money or li xi, xong dat or being the first person to encounter a home on the first day of the new year, as well as issues that prevent me from fully feeling like my cousins and I don't have some kind of weird barrier. We didn't grow up in the same country. There's a lot of cultural and family situational drama, just like with any other Viet kieu and their families back in Vietnam. Deep down inside I still feel guilty that they didn't get to go to America and wonder what would their lives be like if they had the opportunity. Even though their lives are better in Vietnam and less rigorous, I still think about their potential and their children's potential a lot. My Vietnamese New Years resolution is to spend more time with my family and keep producing content that you enjoy to watch. Thank you so much everyone for following me.

By chance or (fate) I met Mr. Vu in the streets of Phnom Penh and was surprised that a Chinese man could speak Vietnamese so well. Then he told me his story and I was even more surprised. Mr. Vu's parents came from China and settled in Cambodia. They did make their way into Vietnam for a while but decided to move on towards Phnom Penh, where he was born. Many years later he had to flee by foot escaping the Khmer Rouge. He walked all the way to Saigon and then My Tho where he lived for 10 years selling ice cream. It took him 10 years to learn Vietnamese this well. More stories about Vietnamese aspects in Cambodia coming up!
