At the top of South America are three small territories. Until about ten years ago, not a single road connected them to the outside world. They are some of the world’s least talked about places and yet all three have interesting stories to tell. Stories of sugar and slavery, calypso and cults. In this series of videos I’m going to tell the story, of the Guianas...

French Guiana: the treasures hidden in the forest | WIDE

Olivier Dummett grew up alongside the Approuague river. One day, when he was exploring the river, he discovered an old abandoned cacao plantation. Since then, he has been harvesting the cacao trees and protecting the areas. He advocates that leaving the forest in its wild state can be more profitable for humans than cutting it down.

Mimiséku shares his beliefs. He is a medicine man and one of the last people alive to still know the secrets of French Guiana's plants. He is living proof that the forest has infinite therapeutic potential that could prove a treasure for our future.

The Secret to Crossing the Border from French Guiana to Suriname

Crossing the border from French Guiana to Suriname - As you approach the border between French Guiana and Suriname, the landscape undergoes a subtle transformation, hinting at the shift from one country to another. The lush rainforests of French Guiana slowly give way to the dense, untamed wilderness of Suriname, creating an ambiance of adventure and discovery.

As you reach the official border crossing point, a sense of anticipation builds. The border is marked by a modest outpost, where immigration and customs officials carry out their duties. The atmosphere here is relaxed yet efficient, reflecting the region's unique blend of cultures and influences.

Stepping out of your vehicle, you are greeted by the warm tropical air, carrying with it the scents of exotic flora and the faint echoes of distant wildlife. The bureaucratic formality is seamlessly intertwined with the laid-back charm of the region, setting the tone for your Surinamese adventure.

Once the necessary formalities are complete, you embark on a short journey across the border. The road before you is enveloped by dense foliage, the verdant greenery seeming to engulf you as you traverse deeper into Suriname. Cayenne, French Guiana

map of French Guiana

French Guiana ; French: Guyane , is an overseas department/region and single territorial collectivity of France on the northern Atlantic coast of South America in the Guianas. It borders Brazil to the east and south and Suriname to the west.

With a land area of 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi), French Guiana is the second-largest region of France (more than one-seventh the size of Metropolitan France) and the largest outermost region within the European Union. It has very low population density, with only 3.5 inhabitants per square kilometre (9.1/sq mi). (Its population is less than 1⁄200 that of Metropolitan France.) Half of its 294,436 inhabitants in 2022 lived in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. 98.9% of the land territory of French Guiana is covered by forests, a large part of which is primeval rainforest. The Guiana Amazonian Park, which is the largest national park in the European Union, covers 41% of French Guiana's territory.

Since December 2015, both the region and department have been ruled by a single assembly within the framework of a new territorial collectivity, the French Guiana Territorial Collectivity (French: collectivité territoriale de Guyane). This assembly, the French Guiana Assembly (French: assemblée de Guyane), replaced the former regional council and departmental council, which were disbanded. The French Guiana Assembly is in charge of regional and departmental government. Its president is Gabriel Serville.

View from Salvation Islands
Fully integrated in the French Republic since 1946, French Guiana is a part of the European Union, and its official currency is the euro. A large part of French Guiana's economy depends on jobs and businesses associated with the presence of the Guiana Space Centre, now the European Space Agency's primary launch site near the equator. As elsewhere in France, the official language is standard French, but each ethnic community has its own language, of which French Guianese Creole, a French-based creole language, is the most widely spoken. mapa de Guayana Francesa , carta de Francais Guyane French Guiana lies between latitudes 2° and 6° N, and longitudes 51° and 55° W. It consists of two main geographical regions: a coastal strip where the majority of the people live, and dense, near-inaccessible rainforest which gradually rises to the modest peaks of the Tumuc-Humac mountains along the Brazilian frontier. French Guiana's highest peak is Bellevue de l'Inini in Maripasoula (851 m, 2,792 ft). Other mountains include Mont Itoupé (826 m, 2,710 ft), Cottica Mountain (744 m, 2,441 ft), Pic Coudreau (711 m, 2,333 ft), and Kaw Mountain (337 m, 1,106 ft).

Several small islands are found off the coast: the three Salvation's Islands which include Devil's Island, and the isolated Îles du Connétable bird sanctuary further along the coast towards Brazil.

The Petit-Saut Dam, a hydroelectric dam in the north of French Guiana forms an artificial lake and provides hydroelectricity. There are many rivers in French Guiana, including the Waki River.

As of 2007, the Amazonian forest, located in the most remote part of the department, is protected as the Guiana Amazonian Park, one of the ten national parks of France. The territory of the park covers some 33,900 km2 (13,090 sq mi) upon the communes of Camopi, Maripasoula, Papaïchton, Saint-Élie and Saül. French Guiana is divided into 2 arrondissements and 22 communes:

Cayenne Drone Flight: Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America. Its 17th-century old town district blends influences from France, the Caribbean and Brazil. Tropical-colored Creole-style houses sit beside hilltop ruins of the French colonial Fort Cépérou, which overlooks the Cayenne River. Shops and cafes can be found on the main commercial thoroughfare, Avenue du Général de Gaulle. Place des Palmistes, at Général de Gaulles west end, is a palm-filled square surrounded by food carts. Nearby is the bright-yellow 19th-century Hôtel de Ville (the town hall). The Place Victor Schoelcher market features local spices, Amerindian crafts and Asian food. The Musée des Cultures Guyanaises focuses on the regions many ethnicities, while the Musée Alexandre Franconie has wildlife displays. The suburb of Remire-Montjoly to the east offers honey-colored beaches where leatherback turtles lay eggs, Fort Diamant overlooking the Mahury River and the 5km-long Rorota rainforest trail. Visiting Papillon’s Devil’s island - French Guiana 2018

Papillon’s world famous Devil’s island at ”Îles du Salut” - in French Guiana (South America). Known in English as the Salvation Islands, these little Islands were anything but ”salvation” for the prisoners sent here from the French mainland by Emperor Napoleon III and the subsequent French governments. This was the French smaller version of other more famous death camps. From 1852 to 1947, some 80,000 prisoners died from disease, inhumane conditions and the guillotine on these sad isles. So much for égalité, liberté and fraternité.

The three tiny former prison islands consist of Île du Diable, Île Royale and Île St Joseph and thanks to shark infested waters they were considered escape proof and extra appropriate for political prisoners: including the French/Jewish Alfred Dreyfus - wrongly convicted of treason in 1894.

The most famous prisoner though was Henry Charrière, who became known for his epic tale of nine remarkable escapes from French Guiana’s infamous prison camps. Nicknamed Papillon (Butterfly) for a tattoo on his chest, Charrière claims that after being wrongly convicted of murder he escaped from Îles du Salut by floating toward the mainland on a sack full of coconuts and cut his way through harsh malarial jungles to flee towards freedom eastward. Papillon is portrayed by Steve McQueen in a 1973 Hollywood version of his life also starring a young Dustin Hoffman in thick glasses

MAP OF FRENCH GUIANA

this is a map of French Guiana. French Guiana consists of two main geographical regions: a coastal strip where the majority of the people live, and dense, near-inaccessible rainforest which gradually rises to the modest peaks of the Tumuc-Humac mountains along the Brazilian frontier. French Guiana's highest peak is Bellevue de l'Inini in Maripasoula at 851 m. Other mountains include Mont Itoupé at 826 m, Cottica Mountain at 744 m , Pic Coudreau at 711 m, and Kaw Mountain at 337 m.

Several small islands are found off the coast: the three Salvation's Islands which include Devil's Island, and the isolated Îles du Connétable bird sanctuary further along the coast towards Brazil.

also, The Petit-Saut Dam, a hydroelectric dam in the north of French Guiana forms an artificial lake and provides hydroelectricity. There are many rivers in French Guiana, including the Waki River.
the Amazonian forest, located in the most remote part of the department, is protected as the Guiana Amazonian Park, one of the ten national parks of France. The territory of the park covers some 33,900 km2 upon the communes of Camopi, Maripasoula, Papaïchton, Saint-Élie and Saül.

French Guiana also has an equatorial climate predominant. Located within six degrees of the Equator and rising only to modest elevations, French Guiana is hot and oppressively humid all year round. During most of the year, rainfall across the country is heavy due to the presence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and its powerful thunderstorm cells. In most parts of French Guiana, rainfall is always heavy especially from December to July – typically over 330 millimetres or 13 inches can be expected each month during this period throughout the department.
Otras montañas incluyen Mont Itoupé a 826 m, Montaña Cottica a 744 m, Pic Coudreau a 711 m y Montaña Kaw a 337 m.

Our main area of operation is the south eastern part of Suriname, bordering French Guyana, far up the Marowijne, Lawa and Tapanahony rivers, in the heart of the Amazon jungle. Suriname is a small country on the northeastern coast of South America. It is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, Brazil to the south and the Atlantic ocean to the north . At just under 165,000 square kilometers (64,000 square miles), it is the smallest country in South America. It’s defined by vast swaths of Amazon jungle, Dutch colonial architecture and a melting-pot culture.
