5 Things You Should NEVER Do in Hungary ???????? Don't Do This in Budapest

In today's Hungary travel vlog, we discuss 5 Things You Should NEVER Do in Hungary and Don't Do This in Budapest.

There are a few other posts about Hungary: 25 Things to do in Budapest, Hungary Travel Guide, DO'S AND DON’T IN HUNGARY, Visit Budapest - Five Things You Will Love & Hate about Budapest, Hungary, and 3 Crazy Things About BUDAPEST. But none really touch on the things you should never do in Hungary. So I decided to make this travel vlog!

This isn't a complete list of what not to do in Hungary , just some things I observed from my recent trip to Budapest, Hungary. If you are Hungarian, a Hungarian expat, or living in Hungary and you have any other suggestions of things related to the topic of don't do this in Hungary , make sure you comment below. Make sure you also try Palinka! Palinka is a fruit brandy! If offered Palinka it is rude to turn it down.

Hungary tourism is a big driver of the Hungarian economy, so they do overlook somethings that tourist do, but try to respect the cultural differences when you travel Hungary.

Hopefully you can use this to supplement your Hungary travel guide advice and not be viewed as a rude tourist.

I love Hungary - don't let the rules or culture differences keep you from visiting. Just be mindful of those cultural differences and enjoy this awesome country.

5 Things You Should Never Do In Hungary

Let me start off by saying, if I had to recommend just one city in Europe to visit it would probably be Budapest. It’s got everything, old world charm but in a modern city, the architecture is amazing and exactly what you think of when you think European city, it’s very safe, the food is amazing and it’s soooo affordable compared to comparable cities.

1 - Never clink glasses or bottles together. There was a revolution in Hungary in 1848 that was defeated. Legend has it that Austrians celebrated in Vienna by toasting and clinking their glasses. Hungarians vowed not to cheers with glasses for 150 years. While that time frame ended in 1998 - many Hungarians still do not cheers! It was actually against the law until the mid 1990s!

2 - Never make the Hungry Hungary joke to a Hungarian. It’s one of those things that non Hungarians say to Hungarians and well….it’s just not funny. Don’t do that!!!!

3 - Never forget to tip. After spending 8 months in countries where tipping isn’t customary and sometimes considered offensive, I often forget to tip! In Budapest and Hungary in general tipping is customary. The acceptable tipping rate is around 15%. Side note: Don’t say thank you until you’ve paid your tab. Saying thank you when you pay your tab lets the server know you’re done and you don’t expect any change. So make sure you don’t do that if you want change back.

4 - Never refuse Palinka. Palinka is a fruit brandy that is a favorite with Hungarians. Hungarians like to say Palinka in small amounts is medicine, in large amounts a remedy! You don’t drink Palinka alone - it’s a drink Hungarians have with friends. It’s is a big no-no to turn down Palinka if it’s offered to you.

5 - Never say Buda-PEST. That’s the quickest way to get on a Hungarian’s bad side. It’s Buddah - PESHT. Side note: DONT CALL IT Bucharest! That’s in Romania! I made that mistake…didn’t turn out well for me! In my defense I had one to many Palinka!!!!

Also, never miss a chance to hang out at one of the Budapest ruin bars.

There are also many cafes which focus on delivering a cozy experience along with some specialty coffee, so if you also enjoy coffee for its flavor, make sure to visit them! You can also buy some excellent coffee beans!

What's also really cool about the Pozsonyi street is that most places are pet friendly, there are even dedicated spaces on the street in case your little one needs to go!

It's impossible to call out all the places, even we didn't have the ability to visit every single establishment. We wish that this video inspires you to visit the area and explore it for yourself!

HELLU FROM BUDAPEST!!!????

Here I am back to one of my most favourite cities for the 2nd time. The last time I visited here was in 2019 with my family and this time I traveled SOLO and it feels AMAZING!

On Day 1, I kicked off with a chill 45-min walk to the Buda side to soak in the city's charm at my own pace. First stop: the breathtaking Fisherman's Bastion… it’s especially beautiful at sunrise so definitely visit at that time. Next up, I explored the Buda Castle and then relaxed at the famous Gellert Thermal Baths.. simply divine!

If you want to skip the walk; don’t worry cause this city has an excellent public transportation system. You can even use the ‘Bolt’ app for taxis, but honestly, the buses here are super convenient, cheap and well connected✅

On Day 2 I discovered Budapest's hidden gems, with a Off the Beaten Track walking tour guided by the lovely Irene from Withlocals. I highly recommend taking tours and activities with Withlocals as their experiences are SUPER authentic and amazing!! Irene took me around the city spilling old secrets and lil nugget facts that truly blew my mind.????️‍♀️

Here’s the tour I did:

Some recommendations to take away:

- Karavan Bar HAS TO BE your go-to spot with its food trucks and chill vibes. ‘Las Vegans’ there offers fantastic vegan options!
- DO NOT MISS the ruin bars! Szimpla Kert is the biggest and best and promises an unforgettable evening.
- Get the best views of the city from Gellert Hill – it's the highest point and oh-so-worth it.
- And lastly, you HAVE TO experience the thermal baths!!

Stay tuned for my next vlog about Budapest and let me know in the comments what was your fav part of this one?

What to do in BUDAPEST. Your Travel Guide to the City

Last week we tried Hungarian food ( and this week we explore the incredible city of Budapest!

We start the day at the amazing Central Market (Great Market Hall). Here you’ll find loads of food, souvenirs, and clothing in one of the biggest indoor markets we’ve ever seen. Because we’re still full from eating all the Hungarian food, we only get some fresh made orange juice.

After that we head over to check out the outside of the famous Hungarian Parliament building, definitely one of the more iconic buildings in the country. After this we walk along the Danube River where we find the art installation called A History of Shoes on the Danube. We then head over to the Buda side of the city using the Chain Bridge.

On the Buda side we visit the Fisherman’s Bastion, a castle-like structure with great views over the city.

Lastly we head back to the Pest side, to the Jewish Quarter where we first head to an outdoor street food market, called Karavan where we try Kobe sausages. Then we make our way to the original and most famous ruin bar in Budapest called Szimpla Kert.

Divided by the Danube, the city is made up of Buda on one side, where you can find Ottoman-era thermal baths at the foot of the spectacular Gellert Hill, the royal place and Matthias Church. This place of the city radiates peace and calm. The other side, with its museums, extraordinary Secessionist architecture, its majestic parliament building, Saint Stephen’s Basilica, and its entirely renovated Jewish Quarter and Palace district, is incredibly vibrant and lively.

Besides its history, Budapest has one of the best cultural scenes in Europe. world-class festivals, theatres, museums, concert halls and sporting events. As for foodies, the celebrated creations of Hungarian cuisine are a definite must!

Central market (Great Market Hall)
The Great Market Hall (Nagycsarnok) built in 1897 is the most beautiful of all Budapest market halls. If you love fresh goods, people watching, shopping, or just sightseeing in amazing places, this is the right place for you.

Hungarian Parliament Building
The Hungarian Parliament Building, also known as the Parliament of Budapest after its location, is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination in Budapest. It lies in Lajos Kossuth Square, on the bank of the Danube.

Danube River
The Danube, known by various names in other languages, is Europe's second longest river, after the Volga. It is located in Central and Eastern Europe. The Danube was once a long-standing frontier of the Roman Empire, and today flows through 10 countries, more than any other river in the world.

History of Shoes on the Danube
Link to the memorials:

The Shoes on the Danube Bank is a memorial in Budapest, conceived by film director Can Togay with sculptor Gyula Pauer (hu) to honor the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II.

The Chain Bridge:
The Chain Bridge is one of the best known landmarks of Budapest. It offers one of the city’s most stunning views with the mighty Danube flowing below you.
You can walk across it from Buda to Pest and back – an excellent way to absorb the World Heritage-protected sites and panorama and to take wonderful photos. It offers one of the city’s most stunning views with the mighty Danube flowing below you.

Fisherman Bastion:
The Halászbástya or Fisherman's Bastion is a terrace in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style situated on the Buda bank of the Danube, on the Castle hill in Budapest, around Matthias Church.
