Woodland Caribou P.P. 2018 Solo Canoe Trip - A Lesson in Solitude | 2 of 2

After a 6 day group trip ( I head back into the wilds of WCPP for my first solo canoe trip.

This is a somewhat lengthy movie detailing my first solo canoe trip in 2018 through the wilds of Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in NW Ontario, Canada. This movie isn't so much about the amazing canoeing and fishing one can discover in WCPP - I've detailed these attributes many times over the years.

This report is about my discoveries and thoughts on the latest trend in adventure travel - the idea of doing it alone as a necessary virtue over traveling with a partner or two (or even your dog). I've spent a lot of time alone in the wilderness as day trips in the Rockies but spending days on end by myself is still not something I'm 100% comfortable with as I re-produce this trip report in 2024.

Why do we feel the need to travel solo? Why is this considered the holy grail? Should it be? There are obvious advantages to traveling both with a partner and by oneself, but I am not convinced that one method is necessarily more hardcore or amazing and thus worthy of extra attention over any other. They are simply different, with different challenges and different rewards.

I'm not sure. Maybe in another 6 years I'll have more answers... But somehow, I doubt it. ;)

DO's and DON'Ts of Cuba

Cuba is now opening up for Americans to travel to. These are the Dos and Don'ts. Cuba has remained a bit of a dead zone to Americans and because of that, there are a lot of misconceptions about the country. Cuba is an awesome place full of friendly people but it's still useful to know a few tips before you go. President Obama is now putting in legislation to ease up travel restrictions to Cuba, and before you go there, it's useful to know the do's and don'ts. Even though Cuba just received it's 1st commercial flight from the US, President elect Donald Trump has stated that he will undo President Obama's legislation on Cuba if the Government doesn't make a better deal with the Cuban people. And also tweeting on the news of Castro.
Now in 2019 things have changed again. It's still a lot easier to go to Cuba than it was before, but there's still a few things to be aware of if you're looking to go in 2019 so above is a link to a 2019 update. Back when we went, there were 2 ways to go there. You could book though an authorized tour group or buy a ticket to a different country with inbound flights, buy a plane ticket to Havana, then just fly over. Now you can buy flights directly from the US to Cuba, but you have to choose between 12 different categories the purpose of your stay.
Staying at Casas have also changed. Instead of just flying in and relying on asking around (easier than it sounds), you can now just book places online to stay. The internet is becoming way more accessible there so now there's also an easier way to chat back and fourth and ask advice from the person you'll be staying with.
This video was out of date just a little while ago bun now since Trump is now changing laws back to the way they were, the video in this video may begin to be relevant again. This is Cuba in 2015.

Cuba SUCKS, I'm Leaving. (why it's the worst country i've ever visited) ????????

???? TRINIDAD, CUBA (1.9)
This video tells a story, so make a hot drink, turn your phone horizontal and get comfortable. Come with me as I explore Trinidad and chat to the locals about life on the island to find out what Cubans are protesting about? What's it like to live on the island? What basic amenities are available to the population? What's Cuba like? and more. #FREECUBA

I start off buying a sombrero from a couple that have never left Trinidad and explain their difficulties in buying materials for their business. I then head to the local store to show the limited stock they have and how it's impossible for locals to buy anything because the stores don't accept the national currency. Ridiculous I know. After drinking a Cancanchara we get a bicycle taxi to the housing projects where tourists don't go to show a different side to Trinidad. We ascend a roof through a tiny hole and get shown photos of La Trova when the island was a popular tourist destination.

There are a lot of things to do while in Cuba. I only went to Cuba for 1 week and it was NOT enough time. Cuba is bigger than you think. You should definitely consider going to Cuba if you love culture, meeting friendly new people, tropical weather, beautiful blue beaches, and fun music!

There is definitely a lot to Cuba aside from Havana. It's great riding in the classic cars from the 1950s, but what makes Cuba so special is the country side. Cuba has some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen with lush green forests and cascading waterfalls. Make a stop in Soroa to take a dip in the refreshing rivers that Cuba has to offer.

One of the highlights of my trip to Cuba was trying out the different paladares and eating delicious gourmet Cuba fusion meals. These paladares are scattered all over the island of Cuba. While some are more affordable than others, I would not overlook this experience!

If you love the beaches, then Varadero is going to be your favorite stop. The beaches in Varadero are absolutely beautiful and have crystal clear blue waters. In Varadero you can also find a restaurant this inspired by the Beatles! So if you're a fan of the fab four, then you definitely have to check it out.

Lastly, Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba! He saw the beauty in the island of Cuba and its people and had a lovely home there. While in Cuba, you can visit the house of Ernest Hemingway and see where he lived and wrote.
