What It's Like To Visit San Juan Del Sur NICARAGUA (Nicaragua 2021)
In this video I will show you what it’s like to visit San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua. San Juan Del Sur is a small coastal town in southern Nicaragua that is home to beautiful beaches, great surfing, a nice local market, and incredibly friendly locals. I visited San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua in 2021 so I am extremely excited to give you a tour of San Juan Del Sur in this Nicaragua Travel Vlog.
To start off my San Juan Del Sur Travel Vlog I head to the local market for a delicious and authentic Nicaraguan meal. For about $4 I got a meal with grilled chicken, rice, beans, plantains, a salad, and a mango smoothie. After walking around the local market I went to one of my favorite cafes I have ever been to called The Art Warehouse. This cafe in San Juan Del Sur has such an amazing atmosphere with tons of beautiful art and greenery inside the cafe. Later that night I hiked up to the main viewpoint in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua for incredible views of the town, mountains, and beach.
I was extremely lucky to be in San Juan Del Sur during a local festival that happens once a year to celebrate the town of San Juan Del Sur. There was a big parade with tons of music and dancing. After a delicious local dinner in town, I woke up the next day to experience surfing in San Juan Del Sur. Playa Hermosa, Playa Maderas, and Playa Yankee are all close to San Juan Del Sur and great for surfing!
The next day I continued to explore the beautiful town of San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua and visited a local bakery for breakfast and the local park for a little relaxation. I absolutely loved visiting San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua and I think it’s a great place to backpack Nicaragua. I hope you enjoyed my first Nicaragua Vlog and now have a good idea of what to do in San Juan Del Sur.

San Juan del Sur is a town on Nicaragua’s southwest coast. It’s known for a string of nearby Pacific beaches, such as Maderas Beach, with its strong-breaking waves, and the quieter Marsella Beach. A towering, contemporary Christ of the Mercy statue stands on a cliff above the bay. Near a creek on the outskirts is an ancient petroglyph. South along the coast, olive ridley turtles breed at La Flor Nature Reserve.

San Juan del Sur & Playa Maderas - A party town without the parties

We recently visited San Juan del Sur & Playa Maderas in the South of Nicaragua, close to the border with Costa Rica on Nicaragua's Pacific Coast.
We had been told by friends that San Juan del Sur was a party town, with 'Sunday Funday' being a particular highlight with a pool party at Naked Tiger. However, due to the current travel restrictions and health concerns with such a thing, it was a bit of a ghost town. In fact, this created a strange issue. Now that San Juan del Sur had lost one of its attractions as a party town, should we stay there?
San Juan del Sur as a town is very quaint. It's colourful and a really nice place to visit, but after a few hours you've pretty much covered the town. Farrah went and visited the statue of Jesús de la Misericordia which overlooks the town and bay but again that's only an hour trip.
Furthermore, If you don't have a car, San Juan del Sur is not a great place to stay for surf trips. The surf beaches are 15-20 minutes drive either North or South. As such, we decided to stay North of San Juan Del Sur in Playa Maderas.
The area around Playa Maderas is much more remote - it's pretty much just dirt roads and hills. There are a few places to stay (we stayed in Selina) and a good recommendation is either staying, or at least going for dinner, at Hush Maderas. It has a great sunset view over Playa Maderas and the food is particularly good. You can also go for breakfast/lunch and Machete which is about 20 minutes walk from Playa Maderas beach (South).
Unfortunately, there wasn't any swell so there weren't any waves to surf, which meant that we were in a remote area with not much to do! Ultimately we used the time to relax and catch up on some projects but be warned, whilst it is very peaceful there are limited things to do to fill your time in Playa Maderas!
Our time in San Juan Del Sur/Playa Maderas was strange. There was no Sunday Funday, there were no waves. Would I go back? Not right now. I would wait until travel fully opens up again as it appears the volume of people is one of the attractions of San Juan Del Sur.
Finally - if you're staying in Playa Maderas you can also visit Playa Marsella where there are crocodiles in the river (don't go swimming!).

Nicaragua travel tour. Captured by a drone, this video will introduce all travel enthusiasts to a video overview of the country of Nicaragua in an excellent 4k bird's-eye view.
General country information
Nicaragua is a country in Central America, located between Honduras and Costa Rica, and also washed by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Nicaragua has many active volcanoes, colonial cities and beaches amidst the picturesque Caribbean countryside.
Capital
Managua is not only the capital of Nicaragua, but also the largest city in the country after Guatemala. It is located on the shores of the lake of the same name near the Momotombo volcano. From 1 to 10 August, an annual festival is held here with festivities, music and dancing, and all this is dedicated to the patron saint of Managua, Santo Domingo de Guzman.
Nicaragua beaches
1. Playa Colorado. This beach on the Pacific coast (in the municipality of Tola, Rivas, Nicaragua) is recognized as one of the best for surfing. Its territory is about 2 kilometers long and covered with white sand.
2. Playa Maderas. A piece of paradise in the southern part of the country near the resort town of San Juan del Sur. This is not only a great place for surfers, but also for all lovers of quiet relaxation, walking and swimming in the picturesque bay.
3. Hikiliyo. Geographically, this beach is part of the Padre Ramos Estuari Nature Reserve, where the unique mangrove forests of Central America are protected. In addition to surfing and interesting excursions, you can also enjoy a relaxing holiday in the hot sun.
Nicaragua nature
Nicaragua's landscapes are filled with humid tropical and deciduous forests. In the highlands, as well as in the eastern lowlands, an abundance of palms, sapodillas and mahogany grows, and on the Atlantic coast there is plenty of space for mangroves. Pine, rubber plants, mahogany and oak are especially common. Beautiful sites are represented in the Rio Indio Mais Biosphere Reserve or in the Zapatera archipelago of Lake Nicaragua. The rainforests are home to different types of monkeys, wild pigs, jaguars, cougars, deer and bears, and there are a lot of parrots and hummingbirds among birds.
The main resorts of Nicaragua
1. San Juan del Sur. The small town is located in the south of Nicaragua, off the Pacific coast next to a large bay. Here, over the entire northern side, a huge rock rises with an erected statue of Jesus Christ and an observation deck overlooking the entire town. In addition to a large cozy park, the main advantage of this resort place is a wide and very clean beach.
2. Corn islands. There are two of these islands in Nicaragua. The Big Island is crowded with white sandy beaches, palm trees, and a coral reef. Small Island is a quiet place with a warm turquoise Caribbean Sea, suitable for everyone who wants peace, solitude and relaxation.
What to see
Nature lovers can explore the island of Ometepe with the Mombacho volcano, as well as the coffee-growing Matagalpa region, look at the isolated Caribbean coast or the Corn Islands. It will not be superfluous to go to the historically important cities of Nicaragua, for example, Leon and Granada.
Attractions Nicaragua
1. Basilica of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary. The official name of the cathedral is Basilica de la Asuncion. It is considered the pantheon of Nicaraguan culture with the tomb of the famous Latin American poet Ruben Dario inside.
2. Museum of Art of the Ortiz-Gourdian Foundation. The best contemporary art museum in Central America with collections of famous works by Picasso, Chagall and Miro.
3. Masaya handicraft market. A historic fortress market with neo-colonial Spanish influences, featuring the best handicrafts from different parts of the country.
Useful information for tourists
Russian citizens can fly to Nicaragua without a visa for up to 90 days. At the border, they usually don't ask for health insurance, but it would be better to get it in advance anyway. You won't have to worry about affordable accommodation here, as there are plenty of accommodation options - from a simple hammock in a common room or a bed in hostels to guesthouses and decent three-star hotels. It is customary to pay in the country with the Nirakagun cordon, the local currency, which is best obtained in special exchange offices and banks, not trusting the street assistants. A popular Nicaraguan souvenir is hammocks, which make them the best and most comfortable to use. Other favorite products of the country's guests include arabica coffee, natural Nicaraguan honey, genuine leather products and many colorful painted tableware.
