SECRET NORTH KOREA | YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT IT'S LIKE

I'm just back from North Korea - this is what it's like. Imagine living like you were on a movie set. Welcome to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Imagine having to wake up everyday of your life and perform like you are on a movie set and if you don't - it could mean death?

This is real life North Korea today. I travelled to North Korea and filmed this so you can see what it's like.

Some of this footage is secretly filmed.

You'll get an idea of what it is like to travel to the most isolated country in the world. Visiting many places, including the capital Pyongyang and the poor countryside.

Please do not judge the North Korean people in this video. It is impossible to make a fully balanced view of the country by traveling there - on a controlled guided tour. This video is simply presented to give you an indication of my travel experience and my thoughts after returning.

North Korea is a unique, if not slightly weird experience. It was safer than many countries I've visited. Hopefully, this will give you another perspective on the DPRK.

Thanks for watching.

???? The Strange Land of North Korea (DPRK) ????

⛄ NORTHEAST PASSAGE ON ICEBREAKER ???? -
This is a film about a traveller in the strange land called North Korea or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Tours to the DPRK are tightly scheduled and normally include a visit to the demilitarised zone, museums and statues to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, Pyongyang’s amusements parks, chandelier-laden metro system and showcase entertainment facilities such as the Circus and the SchoolChildren's Palace. In addition to these, I took a flightseeing flight on a Mi-17 helicopter over the DPRK's capital city of Pyongyang. As well, as my tour was an extended one, it also went the northeast of the DPRK to the tri-country area around the Rason Special Economic Zone where the DPRK, China and Russia conjoin.

The cult of the Kims is perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the DPRK. Images or statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il are found everywhere. These graven images are effectively worshipped. This film shows scenes of the veneration of the Kims (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il) that were witnessed.

The government guides control both what you can see and also what you can take photographs of. If you take a photograph of the military, construction or something that they feel does not portray the DPRK in a positive light then they force you to delete the photograph. On exiting the country, the border guards also reviewed photographs to see if they conformed to the aforementioned standards. Despite these restrictions, this film contains images that accurately portray the state of the country as I saw it.

South Koreans are checking themselves into prison to relax

People are paying to go to prison in South Korea because life is too stressful.

A fake prison called “Prison Inside Me” has become a retreat for harried South Koreans looking for a clean break from the daily demands of their careers. Paying visitors are issued a standard blue uniform and must follow the facility’s strict rules. Prisoner guest can even spent time in solitary confinement. Time in this prison is an escape from modern life.

Prison Inside Me in Seoul has hosted a few thousand visitors in the past few years. Many of them are seeking temporary solace from the stress in this resort disguised as a jail.

What is Life Actually Like in North Korea?

What is life like in North Korea? It’s difficult to say. That’s why life in North Korea has come under greater scrutiny in recent decades. Worries about political and economic stability in the country are increasing the curiosity of international communities about how life is in North Korea. Unfortunately, it is hard to describe the quality of life in this country without sounding too critical or negative.
The country’s leadership is succeeding remarkably in alienating the people from the outside world and vice versa. Therefore, North Koreans are contented or compelled to be coping with the political and economic situation in their country. While outsiders see life in North Korea as weird, repressive, and sad, I will try to show you here the real living condition in North Korea. Once again, what is life actually like in North Korea?

What you NEED to know about Traveling to North Korea!

Here's what you need to know about traveling to North Korea! Did you know that taking pictures of soldiers is not allowed, or that you have to take a tour and it’s forbidden to walk around by yourself?! Learn about what you can and can not do in this video about North Korea!

Here’s what you need to know about traveling to North Korea!
10 - Tours
Contrary to popular belief, people can actually visit North Korea. The only detail is that you can’t do it on your own, like say, backpacking through Europe and staying at hostels all over the place. And if you’re an American, it’s RIGHT NOW HIGHLY recommended to NOT visit North Korea, as diplomatic relations are pretty much nonexistent right now. They’re just snatching up Americans left and right as bargaining chips.
But anyways, to visit North Korea you have to buy a guided tour with one of the authorized agencies. These tours are all government-approved and include 24/7 attention by official “minders” that explain the sights, take you to museums, and ensure that you abide the law. This is useful if you want to avoid doing something that might land you in jail, such as in the unfortunate case of Otto Warmbier, but if you were planning to get to know the REAL North Korea, you’ll have temper your expectations a bit.
Tours will mostly take you to the few tourist places that have been previously authorized by the government, so you most likely won’t be seeing how the general public actually functions and lives. The one good thing about the tours is that they’re pretty affordable. If you stay where you’re told to, and don’t go into the country planning to question everything you see, you should be fine. If you want to go off the beaten path all by yourself, then North Korea isn’t the ideal place to plan your next vacation.
9 - Visa
Citizens of most countries need a visa to visit North Korea, after doing the proper visa work, of course. Only a few countries have visa exemptions for its citizens to visit North Korea. After booking a tour with a travel agency, the tour must be approved by North Korean authorities. Once you have authorization, a visa will be issued. The travel agencies you travel with will take care of all the visa paperwork, but sometimes tourists are required to have a phone interview. These interviews are supposedly pretty friendly and usually only touch on certain aspects of your profession. If you’re a journalist or member of a political party, you’re pretty much gonna be rejected. South Koreans and journalists of any nationality can say goodbye to doing a special piece for a news channel. Missionaries and religious people are also forbidden entrance. Although the North Korean Constitution provides for freedom of religious belief”, let’s not forget the government doesn’t exactly actually allow religious freedom.
When traveling with a tour, the visas will be issued as a group. This way, visas are never held by the individual tourists. This might cause worry for some people, but you can take a picture with your phone of your visa and the tourist card of your tour guide, just in case. But then again, we ARE talking about travel to North Korea….so really, if they really wanted to do something, they’d be able to do it.
Ok, you have your tour booked, and your visa looks promising. Now you actually have to get into the country. Most foreigners can enter North Korea by train, plane or boat. But, US Citizens must enter and exit North Korea by air only. Flights for North Korea only depart from China, so tourists flying in are forced to travel to there first.
8 - Sightseeing
So, what would a typical tourist see inside North Korea? Nothing too exciting apparently. Tours will mostly consist of visiting war memorials and monuments dedicated to the supposedly great North Korean leaders of the revolution. There will also be museums that are mostly related to the war and the further glory of the Workers Party of Korea. Many tour groups also visit the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ for short, which is a very popular destination.
