Grytviken Whaling Station | South Georgia & the Falklands | Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

We think of whaling as something that happened 100 or 200 years ago, but whaling activity actually reached its peak during the 1950s. This whaling station on South Georgia Island was where whales were processed for oil and other products -- dangerous, difficult work.

Ocean Giants of the Falkland Islands

Seals and sea lions are found in many locations Around the Falkland Islands. Floating in the shallows, basking in the sun, lazily flipping sand, nuzzling young, there is always something to observe. Sea Lion Island has the added chance of spotting an orca (killer whale) on the hunt for the next meal!

Falkland Islands | A Journey to the Bottom of the Earth

Come along on a journey to the bottom of the earth on my two week trip to the Falkland Islands. I assembled this video to show you what I saw and hopefully, I can make you feel, at least a little bit, the way I did when leaving the Falklands.

And for those of you who might not know that much about the Falkland Islands, I also added a real brief history of the islands and a little bit about the Falklands War.

The Falkland Islands are one of those rare places left where you can escape the modern world. Located 300 miles to the east of the bottom tip of South America. Their remote location has left the Falklands a place for one of a kind wildlife encounters.

Of all the places we’ve visited in recent years the Falklands are unlike any of the others – and I think that is was what I grew to love about the Falklands the most.

Highlights of Stanley in 5 minutes! Falkland Islands

Susa and Masa visit Antarctica and Falkland Islands with MS Roald Amundsen ship in January 2020. Join us on the scenic tour to several places around Antarctic Peninsula. We have a video of all our landings in Antarctica: Cape Horn, Half Moon Island, Brown Bluff, Antarctic Sound, Astrolabe island, Wilhelmina Bay, Orne Harbour, Damoy Point, Deception Island and Elephant Island; as well as landings to Falkland Islands.
The beauty of the landscape leaves us speechless and the humoristic penguins gave us many laughs.

???? A sighting of 500 Whales!

Leaving the Falkland Islands, we made a 2 day transit to South Georgia which turned out to be a highlight of our voyage across the South Atlantic due to a remarkable encounter off Shag Rocks with up to 500 fin whales.

There were wall to wall whales feeding on krill along side Antarctic fur seals, penguins and sea birds.

Falkland Islands Whale Watching

Not sure if they're killer whales or dolphins. Saw these marine mammals while visiting Bleaker Island of Falkland Islands during A&K Le Boreal Antarctica cruise trip in January 2014.

Falkland Islands - Incredible Aerial & Underwater

An incredible view, both aerial and underwater, of one of the last remaining untouched wildlife destinations on the planet. This is a breathtaking look at wild landscapes and incredible marine life like elephant seals, penguins, albatross and sea lions.

The Falkland Islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean off South America are the perfect destination to experience the wonders of nature and wildlife; an unpolluted environment with fantastically clear blue skies, seamless horizons, vast open spaces and stunning white sand beaches. Wildlife is free to roam and many species have chosen the Islands as their home including gentoo and magellanic penguins, southern sea lions, Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins and over 200 species of birds.

About Scott Portelli:

I have travelled the world extensively photographing in some of the most remote destinations, including the Arctic, Antarctica, Galapagos, Azores, Africa and the South Pacific. As a wildlife photographer I have spent hundreds of days in pursuit of different wildlife and been privileged to be up close and personal with many creatures.

I have spent the last decade working with Humpback whales photographing and filming their behaviour above and below the waves. I have received a number of internationally acclaimed awards with works appearing in a multitude of magazines and publications including BBC’s ‘Life’ series book and various documentaries on Australian and New Zealand Television. I have a passion for the ocean and an affinity with whales and cetaceans.
