Location
1. The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall (because the Jews weep here during their prayers) is located on the western side of the Temple Mount.
2. The Western Wall Tunnel is accessed on the northern side of the Western Wall Plaza and runs north to the end of the Temple Mount Platform.
Historical Background
1. When the Romans destroyed the temple in 70 AD, part of the western side of the Temple Mount Platform survived. For hundreds of years prior to 1967, people prayed in the small area of the wall that could be seen at that time. However, in 1967, following the Six-Day War, Israelis excavated below the ground level of the wall and found two more stone rows. They then cleared the area around the wall to create the Western Wall Plaza that visitors see today.
2. The Western Wall is part of the retaining wall, or support wall, that Herod the Great built in 19 BC when he enlarged the Temple Mount complex in order to accommodate a larger temple and Temple Mount area. It was a massive undertaking that required exceptional and sophisticated engineering.
3. Unlike many think, the Western Wall was not part of the wall of the temple King Herod Built.
Places of Interest
1. In the Western Wall Plaza area, a walkway bridge can be seen that tourist use to access the Temple Mount.
2. The Western Wall Plaza is divided into two sections: a men’s and a women’s section.
3. The area close to the wall is considered a synagogue, so men must wear a head covering when entering the men’s section.
4. Most Jews do not enter on the Temple Mount for fear of unknowingly walking in the place where the Holy of Holies might have been. Plus, Muslims do not want them entering there as well.
5. The Western Wall Plaza is the closest large public area to the temple and Holy of Holies for the Jews. Therefore, it is their most holy site.
6. On the northern side of the Western Wall is Wilson’s Arch, which is the modern name for a stone arch whose top is still visible today. It once supported a bridge that provided access to a gate that was level with the surface of the Temple Mount during the time of Jesus. Under this arch is a synagogue where Jews pray and read the Scriptures.
7. The Western Wall Plaza is only 10% of the entire western wall of the Temple Mount Platform. The majority of the wall is accessed by entering what is called “The Western Wall Tunnels.” We will see that part shortly.
8. The entire length of the Western Wall is 1,575 ft. long (480 m.), almost a third of a mile (.53 km.).
9. South of the Western Wall are stones that the Romans cast down when they destroyed the city in 70 AD. under the leadership of the Roman General, Titus.
10. The broken pavement of the street that the massive stones crushed when they fell is sobering to see.
11. Burn marks remain on some of the stones as a result of fire from the Roman conquest of the city in 70 AD.
12. There are remains of shops that were part of a large shopping plaza at the southern part of the Western Wall.
13. This is the same wall that Jesus and His disciples would have seen.
14. On the Southern Stair entrance to the temple is where Jesus would have taught His disciples and entered the Temple Mount area.
15. At the southernmost end of the Western Wall is a significant stone which stood upon the uttermost southwestern corner of the Temple Mount.
• It has words written in Hebrew that mean “The Trumpeter’s House.”
• A priest would stand at this corner announcing with a loud trumpet the beginning of the Sabbath, and other festival days the Jews celebrated.

The Western Wall of the Temple Mount (also known as the “Jerusalem Wall”) is one of the most magnificent and significant remnants in Jerusalem from the days of the Second Temple, destroyed approximately 2,000 years ago.
The Western Wall stretches along almost half a kilometer, but today, the part visible to all at the Western Wall Plaza is a mere 70 meters of it. The tour of the Western Wall Tunnels allows visitors to reach the segments of the Wall hidden from view, and to touch the original and special stones that tell the story of the Jewish nation. Visitors to the Western Wall Tunnels walk through ancient and fascinating subterranean spaces with exquisite archeological findings, such as large stone arches, water pits, an ancient water aqueduct that ends at the Strouthion Pool, and more.
The Western Wall (the Kotel in Hebrew) is impressive, but its greatness is truly discovered when you descend underground to the Western Wall Tunnels. The tunnels run along approximately 488 meters of the Western Wall, giving visitors a taste for the challenge that stood before Herod the Great during this biggest of all his immense building projects—the expansion of the Temple Mount. One such example is the famous western stone which is 14 meters long and weighs almost 570 tons.
These complex underground tunnels create a direct link between the history of the Hasmonean period and modern times. The tunnels are supported by many arches and contain stairways that connected the ancient city with the Temple Mount, over the Tyropoeon Valley that ran along the western side of the Temple Mount, separating the two. Today these passageways support streets and homes in the Muslim Quarter.
The tunnels were first discovered during digs done by British archaeologists in the 19th century, but the real digging was done after the Six Day War, after 1967, by the Israeli Ministry of Religions. One of the most special places to visit inside the tunnels is the part of the Western Wall traditionally considered closest to where the Holy of Holies used to be on the Temple Mount. The Holy of Holies, where the Foundation Stone and the Dome of the Rock are located, is the holiest place for Jews. In this location in the tunnels, there is a small synagogue where Jews come to pray.

A trip to Jerusalem isn't complete without a pilgrimage to the Western Wall. Here's what you need to know before you go.
Step 1: Know its Hebrew name
Know the Wall’s Hebrew name -- the Kotel, which simply means the Wall. This is what everyone in Israel calls it.
Tip
Don't call the site The Wailing Wall. Many people find the term offensive.
Step 2: Understand its history
Understand the history of the Western Wall. It’s located at the site of 2 ancient Jewish temples, both of which were destroyed -- the first by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, and the second by the Romans in 70 CE. The Western Wall was built in approximately 20 BCE around the Second Temple.
Step 3: Know where it is
Know where the Western Wall is located: in the Old City of Jerusalem at the foot of the Temple Mount. The area in front of the Wall, where visitors from around the world come to pray, is known as the Western Wall Plaza. It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Tip
Consider taking a Kotel tunnel tour, which takes you further along the wall than you’d otherwise be able to go.
Step 4: Dress properly
Dress properly. Men must wear a hat or other head covering; those who don’t have one are provided a free skullcap, called a kippah. Women must wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees; they can borrow shawls at the entrance if need be. Shorts and jeans are not appropriate for anyone.
Step 5: Behave appropriately
Behave appropriately. Women are expected to pray in the section reserved for them, and are barred by law from reading aloud from the Torah and wearing prayer shawls. Smoking, picture-taking, and cellphone use is forbidden on Shabbat -- from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. Pets are not allowed into the Western Wall Plaza.
Step 6: Leave a note
Write a prayer on a tiny piece of paper and slip it into one of the Wall’s crevices; it’s a time-honored tradition. Because more than a million notes are left in the Wall each year, they’re collected twice a year and buried on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives.

The Western wall, wailing wall or The Kotel is The holiest place for the Jewish people. The Western wall is one of the support walls of the temple mount complex built by King Herod the great. Also known as the wailing wall because this is where Jews come to wail the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem.
The Western Wall (in Hebrew: The Kotel) is one of the four retaining walls surrounding the Temple Mount for about two thousand years, from the end of the Second Temple period to the present day. In the Jewish tradition, the Western Wall is widely regarded as sacred, and probably as early as the 14th century a place of worship was established near it, used to this day.
The Western Wall is of religious, national and historical importance, bringing millions of visitors every year, both Jews and non-Jews. Bnei Mitzvah is there for the Torah on Mondays and Thursdays, soldiers swear allegiance to his supreme square, and people from around the world visit him.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
