Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | From the port of Kuşadası, we wander the streets of ancient Ephesus, soak in a natural spa at Pamukkale, learn why the dervishes whirl at Konya, munch lunch in a Turkish pizzeria, and cruise the Mediterranean on a traditional Turkish gulet from Antalya. Turkey is a mighty nation whose ancient heritage, Muslim faith, and western ways are coming together...and we’ll see how. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #turkey

Discovering the Beauty of Turkey's Turquoise Coast | Dalyan and Fethiye

Discovering the Beauty of Turkey's Turquoise Coast | Dalyan and Fethiye

Hey Y'all, welcome back to another video in our Turkey travel vlog series. Today we are traveling down the west coast of Turkey, also known as the Turquoise Coast!

Our first stop on our road trip is the town of Dalyan. The town sits on a winding river, between a huge lake and the lovely beach of Iztuzu. On the way to the beach, we saw some beautiful Carian tombs, which are carved into the cliffside. At the southern end of İztuzu Beach is the turtle rescue centre, established in 2009 largely through the influence of an English woman named June Haimoff. She campaigned for years to save this beach from development. We were lucky enough to meet Captain June and hear her story! This center has saved many loggerhead and green turtles from injuries done by fishing hooks, nets, and boat propellers.

After that, we made it to the town of Fethiye where we enjoyed a seafood dinner right on the water. The next morning we took a boat cruise from town that brought us to a few islands as we sailed along the stunning Turquoise Coast.

How A 92-Year-Old Saved The Ancient Craft Of Parchment-Making In Western Turkey | Still Standing

Parchment is one of the most durable writing materials in the world. The ancient paperlike material was invented more than 2,000 years ago in Turkey but almost went extinct after the Middle Ages. At 92, İsmail Araç is one of the last artisans in the world still making it by hand.

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | We marvel at the fascinating landscape of Cappadocia from high above in a balloon...and from deep below, prowling an underground city where Christians once hid out. We’ll join a circumcision party, explore troglodyte ghost towns, shop for sheep at the market, and chat with an imam. Then we enjoy the modern capital, Ankara, and pay our respects to the father of modern Turkey, Atatürk. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #turkey

The Beauty of Turkish Women | Traveling Turkey (Turkiye ????????)

►Pimsleur Language Course 7 day FREE trial:

Turkish men ????????, their style, their beards, and their beauty. They are so popular that their image has become the international logo of barbershops around the world ????
But what about their counterpart, the Turkish women, well they are truly spectacular people, and for so many reasons they deserve our attention ????

In this one-minute video, I tried to show you as much as I can about the women of Turkiye (Turkey) ????????but the truth is that they are so much more than this.
Beautiful, Smart, cute, and Strong are just some of the reasons Turkish women deserve a spot in this channel and in our hearts ❤️.

One of the points that I make in the video is about the way they speak ????, and I want to invite everyone to pay attention next time you hear Turkish women speaking because it’s not a popular language for romantic movies but in my opinion, it should!.

When I hear Turkish women speaking, it doesn’t matter if they are saying “I love you” or ordering a chicken soup, it always sounds like they are saying something romantic ????‍♂️????

What do you think of Turkish women?

Istanbul

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2008 | In Istanbul, we'll lose our way in the Grand Bazaar and munch our way through the famously fragrant Spice Market. We'll follow the fall of the ancient capital of Byzantium and the rise of Islam at the city's ancient wall, and wander among the treasures of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapı Palace. To escape the city bustle, we'll cruise the churning waters of the Bosphorus, make friends over backgammon, and try a traditional Turkish bath. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #istanbul

Rick Steves' Europe Preview: Western Turkey

From the port of Kuşadası, we wander the streets of ancient Ephesus, soak in a natural spa at Pamukkale, learn why the dervishes whirl at Konya, munch lunch in a Turkish pizzeria, and cruise the Mediterranean on a traditional Turkish gulet from Antalya. Turkey is a mighty nation whose ancient heritage, Muslim faith, and western ways are coming together...and we'll see how.

At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.

Turkey - the classical sites of north western Turkey

Most of the places we are going to visit today were, at some time in their past - Greek. And this is the common thread that runs through the places we visit. However, Greek influence in the area was more by settlement rather than the foundation of colonies (in the way that we have seen in Sicily and Southern Italy). Probably the Greeks simply took over the places they inhabited over the course of centuries.

The Greek cities we are going to visit were thus not “Greek” in the Archaic period and therefore had nothing of the divine heritage of the cities we come across in Greek - Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Corinth and so on.

Prior to the arrival of Greek culture, the undoubted power in the regions were the Lydians. But also the Lycians.

The in the 5th century BC, Persia asserted its power in the region. There were battles with the Athenians at Thermopylae (480BC - Persian victory) and Salamis (480BC - Greek victory). And thenceforth, the Persians were an important power in the region.

In the 5th century BC Darius I built the Royal Road which connected Susa in Persia with Sardis in Western Anatolia.

Western Anatolia then played a pivotal role in the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire.

This was until the arrival of Alexander the Great in 334BC, after which Greek culture was reasserted on the region in the form of the Macedonian Empire. In fact Alexander the Great visited many of the sites we visit today.

Ephesus, Gallipoli, and the Cotton Castles (Pammukale) in Western Turkey!

There is A LOT of history that has happened in Western Turkey. Check out Pamukkale, Ephesus, Canakkale, the Ruins of Hierapolis, the Ancient Ruins of Troy, and the Battlefields of Gallipoli!

It actually took me about 2.5 weeks to visit everything in this video, as western Turkey is VERY big. The best way to visit Canakkale, Ephesus, and other places in Western Turkey is either via bus or train! (Unless you have your own car.) I hope you enjoy this clip as we discover some amazing historical sights in Western Turkey!
