THIS IS WEST CORK

It's hard for me to express in words how much I love this part of our beautiful country. Its an area that means so much to me personally, having spent the last 33 years of my life, every summer down here camping and exploring with my family and friends. I learned so much and have only the best memories which I continue to make every time I visit. I hope the footage can speak for West Cork itself and you all enjoy.

Baltimore by drone, West Cork | IRELAND ????????

Baltimore is a village in western County Cork, Ireland. It is the main village in the parish of Rathmore and the Islands, the southernmost parish in Ireland. It is the main ferry port to Sherkin Island, Cape Clear Island and the eastern side of Roaring Water Bay (Loch Trasna) and Carbery's Hundred Isles.

Although the name Baltimore is an anglicisation of the Irish Baile an Tí Mhóir meaning town of the big house, the Irish-language name for Baltimore is that of the O'Driscoll castle, Dún na Séad or Dunashad (fort of the jewels). The restored castle is open to the public and overlooks the town.

In ancient times, Dunashad was considered a sanctuary for druids and the place name is associated with Bealtaine.

The town was depopulated in 1631 in the Sack of Baltimore, a raid by Barbary pirates from either Ottoman Algeria or Salé (Morocco). Between 100 and 237 English settlers and local Irish people were sold into slavery, of whom only two or three ever saw Ireland again. Reminders of the incident still exist in the form of pub names, like the Algiers Inn. The survivors fled to Skibbereen, and Baltimore for generations was almost deserted. A slow recovery began in the 18th century, and by the early 1800s the village was starting to prosper again, only to suffer further great losses in the Great Famine.

The conspicuous conical white painted Baltimore Beacon, sometimes called the 'pillar of salt' or 'Lot's wife' is approximately 15.2m high and 4.6m in diameter at the base.

Baltimore attracts visitors and the resident population increases in summer months due to the summer homes that have been built in the area. Baltimore is used by visitors interested in sailing, fishing and exploring the countryside. Baltimore is a base from which tourists explore Cape Clear, Sherkin and Lough Hyne. Lough Hyne, Ireland's first marine nature reserve is approximately 5 km from town. Baltimore also has become a venue for scuba diving, due largely to the number and variety of shipwrecks in the bay. These include a Second World War submarine (U-260), the bulk carrier Kowloon Bridge and the Alondra from 1916.

West Cork - Ireland

Aerial footage all around Cork but mainly West Cork.

It's no wonder they call West Cork “A Place Apart”. Nature sets the pace in this beautiful south west corner of Ireland, stretching from the south-coast of Kinsale to three rugged westerly peninsulas reaching into the wild Atlantic: Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head and Beara.
West Cork is the place many head for, leaving city lives behind to play along the long zig-zagging coastline, and walk or ride through peaceful inland woods and valleys. Hundreds of inlets, tiny coves, safe harbours and beaches are just right for long active days in the salty air.
There’s something restorative about the temperate climate and sub-tropical gardens, the tranquil lanes thick with fuchsia and montbretia, the sudden glimpses of water through the trees, the shifting light, and the soft greens, greys and violets of bays and distant mountains.
There’s edge-of-the-world drama too: climbing up to a mountain pass through ever-changing weather, crossing the bridge to the end of Mizen Head with the Atlantic crashing below, or taking the cable car to Dursey Island, one of over a hundred West Cork islands. Seven of these are inhabited, including Ireland’s most southerly community on Cape Clear “the storytellers’ island”, where Irish is spoken as a first language, and there’s an independent way of life.
Beyond Cape Clear, the imposing Fastnet Lighthouse stands on a rock known as Ireland’s tear drop, for emigrants to the new world, this was their last sight of their native land. The whole coast echoes with history, ancient sites, ruined castles, coastal forts, copper mines.
West Cork is both very Irish, and quite cosmopolitan, for many have ‘blown-in’ on the winds and stayed to make this beautiful place their home. There’s a strong creative community here.… It’s A Place Apart.
Places featured in this video include the following; Roaringwater Bay, Galley Head, Baltimore, Audley Cove, Mizen Head Lighthouse, Heir Island, Ballydehob, Sherkin Island, The Shakey Bridge, Sundays Well, Three Castle Head, Dursey Cable Car, Bantry House, Long Island, Castle Freke, River Ilen, Glandore, Kinsale, Kilcoe Castle, Liss Ard, Schull, Skeam Island.

Glandore, West Cork

Aerial footage of Glandore, West Cork.

Glandore (meaning harbour of the gold) is the name of both a harbour and village in County Cork, Ireland. Glandore is located about an hour's drive west of Cork city.

The village has several pubs, with traditional music. It is a very popular holiday destination for Irish holiday makers in particular. Famous homeowners include Margaret Jay, former leader of the House of Lords, and prominent business-man Tony O'Reilly. The Church of Ireland which is being restored is located at the entrance of The Rectory originally a private home and then home of the Rectory but now a popular wedding venue. The Rectory (originally called East View) along with Bearna Donn (originally called West View) & Stone Hall were built in the 19th Century by the Allen Family. The village yacht club's official headquarters is located near the pier on the Old School Road.

The Irish Coast Guard has a unit based in Glandore at the Rocket House at the western end of the village.

The annual regatta takes place the third weekend of August. Sailing is the main attraction to the village; however, rowing and swimming are also a part of the community. In former years there used also be Irish dancing competitions in the village square. The Lar Casey Cup is awarded to the winning Dragon class yacht.

Every 2 years (on odd years) the Glandore Classic Boat Regatta is held during the second week of July.
