Today I woke up thinking I was flying from Chad to Mali. But due to an unexpected flight cancellation (on my 2nd leg), I was left in Lomé, Togo for 24 hours. I definitely wasn't mad about it because it means that I have the chance to explore a new place! It's country #150 and also my very first time in West Africa.

Here's what I discovered over 24 hours in Togo. Have you ever been before?

BURKINA FASO ???????? Best Places in 2024!

Travel to Burkina Faso, and the best places to visit in an off the beaten path West African country that has safari (Nazinga, Tengrela), waterfalls (Karfiguela), wildlife (elephants, hippos), cultural festivals like FESTIMA, incredible music and dance (in Bobo Dialasso especially), nature parks (Domes of Fabredougou, Sindou Peaks), UNESCO ruins (Loropeni), exquisite culture (Grand Mosque) and unique architecture (tiebele). Don't be scared by the media - yes there is terrorist activity, but it's confined to specific parts. My Top 11 things to do in Burkina Faso are mainly away from the danger areas. Still, be safe and hire an experienced guide who is all about SAFETY!

About Abidjan: Abidjan is the economic capital of Ivory Coast and one of the most populous French-speaking cities in Africa. According to the 2014 census, Abidjans population was 4.7 million, which is 20 percent of the overall population of the country, and this also makes it the sixth most populous city proper in Africa, after Lagos, Cairo, Kinshasa, Dar es Salaam, and Johannesburg. A cultural crossroads of West Africa, Abidjan is characterised by a high level of industrialisation and urbanisation. The city expanded quickly after the construction of a new wharf in 1931, followed by its designation as the capital city of the then-French colony in 1933. Abidjan remained the capital of Côte dIvoire after its independence from France in 1960. The completion of the Vridi Canal in 1951 enabled Abidjan to become an important sea port. In 1983, the city of Yamoussoukro was designated as the official political capital of Côte dIvoire. However, almost all political institutions and foreign embassies continue to be located in Abidjan. Because Abidjan is also the largest city in the country and the centre of its economic activity, it has officially been designated as the economic capital of the country. The Abidjan Autonomous District, which encompasses the city and some of its suburbs, is one of the 14 districts of Côte dIvoire. // Ivory Coast, also The Ivory Coast and formally Côte dIvoire, officially the Republic of Côte dIvoire, is a country located on the south coast of West Africa. Ivory Coasts political capital is Yamoussoukro in the centre of the country, while its economic capital and largest city is the port city of Abidjan. It borders Guinea to the northwest, Liberia to the west, Mali to the northwest, Burkina Faso to the northeast, Ghana to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean) to the south.

We Africa to Red Earth. Ed in che modo un idraulico avrebbe potuto aiutare questa gente se non portando… acqua?

Daily life in West Africa - Part 2

You can live well in West Africa. Lomé, Ouagadougou, Dakar, Abidjan… the big cit-ies in the western part of sub-Saharan Africa offer many advantages. Dakar in Senegal is enjoying increasing success as a “good place to live”, while Abidjan in the Ivory Coast is one of Africa’s most heavily-populated cities and is undergoing an urban development programme. In this programme dedicated to daily life in West Africa, we’re going to help you choose where to move to, how to go about finding accommodation and decide on the schooling options for your children. Let’s begin with a look at the local cost of living:

The cost of living in Africa: to answer the question about the cost of living, you really have to look at it in two different ways: either you want to live Western-style, in which case the cost of living will be high because everything, or nearly everything, is imported and therefore subject to heavy cus-toms duties, so things are expensive. For example, cars: a new car in Africa is very expensive, much more expensive than in Europe, about 3 times the price, because there’s the cost of trans-port, the customs duties, the distribution circuit, etc. So, if you want to live a Western life, the cost of living is not very different from what you have in Europe. On the other hand, if you want to live African-style, the Africans obviously have a cost of living in line with the level of development and the level of prices in these countries, in other words, a low cost of living because life is simple.

If you want to eat European-style or go out to a restaurant that serves Asian food, for example, you should expect to pay around thirty euros. The official currency of the eight member states of the West African Economic and Mone-tary Union, of which Senegal and the Ivory Coast form part, is the Franc CFA. One euro is equivalent to 655.96 Francs CFA and fixed parity was established in 1999. Rents vary according to the districts in the West African capitals. We’ll begin by listening to which are the recommended districts in Dakar, in Senegal.

The districts that we could recommend to a French person or a foreigner looking to move to Da-kar. There are a lot of very secure districts in Dakar nowadays, where you’ll find all the facilities that you have here in Europe, particularly in terms of amenities, such as schools and crèches, all the infrastructures that you’ll find here in Europe. For a long time, the Almadies district was the smart part of Dakar, but it’s now in competition with other districts such as the Fann Residence area and the Point E district, where there’s a very strong French community now because there’s a French school there. There are other districts that are a bit more working class but just as interest-ing to live in, such as the Ouest Foire, Nord Foire districts, Sacré Coeur too, and then there’s Hann Mariste, which is equally popular with the French community. They’re very pleasant places to live in. There’s a certain security and all the amenities that you need.

In Dakar, rents in the districts close to the Plateau will be the highest. The Fann, Ouakam, Point E, Mermoz and Almadies districts are also highly priced, while the Hann Mariste, Liberté, Comico, N’gor and Yoff districts offer more affordable rents. For example, you should expect to pay a monthly rent of 180,000 to 250,000 XOF for a 55-75 m2 apartment in the Sacré Coeur and Mar-iste districts.
Prices in the Yoff Virage, Sotrac Mermoz and Mamelles districts will be be-tween 250,000 and 450,000 XOF. Finally, in the Plateau, Fann Résidence and Almadies districts, monthly rents will be between 350,000 and 650,000 XOF. As in Senegal, prices can also be high in the Ivory Coast:

Abidjan is quite expensive for accommodation, especially if you’re looking for a short stay of a few months, 6 months or a year; it’s very difficult to find something that’s in line with local incomes, and prices are often inflated as soon as they see an expat arrive.

As far as districts are concerned, there are the residential and seaside districts, the best known being Cocody and Bietry, but I think that, for a young French person who really wants to feel the pulse of the city, I would advise him to get off the beaten track and go into the more working-class districts; they’re a bit more lively and give a much truer reflection of life in Abidjan.

The districts near the French schools allow you to avoid the traffic jams if you have chil-dren at school. You need to find the best compromise between rental cost and journey time, because Dakar, for example, has major traffic problems. In the Ivory Coast, Sene-gal, Gabon and Cameroon, you can put your children into French schools.
