The Wessex Association of Model Railway Clubs hosted the Frome Model Railway Exhibition at the Cheese and Grain on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th January 2020. The venue was packed, lots of families with their children, not just the usual railway modellers. It's great to see there is interest in the hobby. A list of the layouts covered in this video follows in running order:-

Bognor Regis (England) Model Railway Club 2018 Exhibition

Bognor Regis is my home town and there was sign within sight of my house giving directions to the local school hosting this year’s exhibition. It had been a few years since I last visited the annual exhibition and it was nice to catch up with old friends and reminisce. There was a nice range of layouts on view along with various traders offering old, new and bespoke items to enhance any new or existing layout. Advanced, budget and children’s layouts were all well represented, there was even a ride on train to keep the little ones entertained.

Places to see in ( Frome - UK )

Frome is a town and civil parish in eastern Somerset, England. Located at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills, the town of Frome
is built on uneven high ground, and centres on the River Frome.
Frome is approximately 13 miles (21 km) south of Bath, 43 miles (69 km) east of the county town, Taunton and 107 miles (172 km) west of London.

In April 2010 a large hoard of third-century Roman coins was unearthed in a field near the town. From AD 950 to 1650, Frome was larger than Bath and originally grew due to the wool and cloth industry. It later diversified into metal-working and printing, although these have declined. Frome was enlarged during the 20th century but still retains a very large number of listed buildings, and most of the centre falls within a conservation area.

Frome has road and rail transport links and acts as an economic centre for the surrounding area. It also provides a centre for cultural and sporting activities, including the annual Frome Festival and Frome Museum. A number of notable individuals were born in, or have lived in, the town. In 2014, Frome was called the sixth coolest town in Britain by The Times newspaper. Frome has recently been shortlisted as one of three towns in the country for the 2016 Urbanism Awards in the 'Great Town Award' category.

The area surrounding the town of Frome is Cornbrash, Oxford Clay and Greensand. Frome is unevenly built on high ground above the River Frome, which is crossed by the 16th century town bridge in the town centre. The main areas of the town are (approximately clockwise from the north-west): Innox Hill, Welshmill, Packsaddle, Fromefield, Stonebridge, Clink, Berkley Down, Easthill, Wallbridge, The Mount, Keyford and Lower Keyford, Marston Gate, The Butts, Critchill, Trinity, and Gould's Ground.

The older parts of Frome – for example, around Sheppard's Barton and Catherine Hill – are picturesque, containing an outstanding collection of small late-17th- and 18th-century houses. The Trinity area, which was built in the latter half of the 17th century and first half of the 18th century, is a fine (and rare) example of early industrial housing. Cheap Street contains buildings dating to the 16th and 17th centuries and has a stream running down the middle fed by the spring at St John's Church. Cheap Street has never been used for vehicular traffic and its layout is based on land plots dating to approximately 1500.

Frome is served by the Bristol to Weymouth railway line which passes the eastern edge of the town. Frome station was opened in 1850 and is one of the oldest railway stations still in operation in Britain, now with direct services to London Paddington. Frome is also served by a number of bus routes.

( Frome - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Frome . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Frome - UK

Chiltern Model Railway Exhibition – 2019

Held over the weekend of 12th and 13th January 2019, this is the third time the exhibition has been held at the Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre.

In this short video I cover some of the highlights and major layouts that attended. One thing that I did notice was that most exhibitors were running to a time table and as such often there was a lack of movement for the viewing public. There were also a few abrupt stops where routes were not cleared or sections still remained isolated.... The video didn’t quite go to plan. I did ask a few exhibitors if they wouldn’t mind wearing a microphone and doing a bit to camera telling me about their layouts. They said they were either too busy with the timetable or simply refused... but would then answer questions from the guy next to me...

On a technical note, whilst there is still some background conversations, I used the Rode external microphone to try and capture some of the sounds from the trains themselves, which seems to have worked as on some clips you can hear the wheels over the joints etc.

Featured Layouts in order of appearance:

We Start with possibly the largest layout in the exhibition, Grantham. Measuring 33 feet by 17 feet this OO 4mm scale layout was very impressive, although for a large main station set in mid to late 1930’s it wasn’t really that busy. The layout still uses DC control systems, which might explain the odd running issue where a train would stop due to an isolation section. But overall the layout was really impressive and always had a large audience.

The next layout, Grindley Brook, was around the same size as Grantham at 34 feet x 20 feet, but only a portion of that was the actual display part of the layout. This superb fictional finescale O gauge layout is set between 1954 and 1964 as part of the ex LNWR line in Shropshire. Again DC powered, but didn’t exhibit any of the running issues like some other layouts. The 0-6-0 tank could do with a drop of oil though!

Moving on to Ackthorpe from the Southampton MRS, this 33 feet x 12 feet OO 4mm scale layout is inspired by two stations on the North Eastern Railway, Moorthorpe and Ackworth, hence the name. The period modelled is mid to late 1950’s, and used a pure DC system of control.

Oldham King Street Parcels is a O gauge layout and features a small fictional station and parcel depot in the North West of England around the early to mid 1970’s. DCC control is used, and many of the locos, including the class 40 shown here feature sound.

Running up to date rolling stock, Norwood Road is a small 11 feet by 5 feet layout based on the location on the outskirts of Croydon south London. Interestingly the layout uses Arduino’s to control the signalling in true prototypical fashion.

Next featured layout is Rugby Central. The layout is modelled on the actual location around the late 1950’s to early 1960’s. The 16 feet by 3 foot layout uses DC control.

Ferring is the next layout. A P4 standard layout, this features a fictional branch terminus off the Brighton to Portsmouth line near Goring. All track work is handmade to the P4 18.83mm gauge standard, with a unique 50 lever frame that controls most of the points by wires, cranks and springs.

The Final layout featured is Aber Emlyn. A 7mm fine scale terminal station set in South Wales in the 1930’s. At 34 feet by 20 feet it is an impressive layout. Track work has been built to a high standard, and all signals, including the ground signals are fully operational.

All Change at Eridge (model railway).

It has been about a year since I last posted video of my model railway layout 'Eridge'. That's because for most of that time I have been working on my other hobbies, but, Christmas gifts have brought me back to modelling and a change on the layout. The Peco track is being lifted and replaced with SMP track and Marcway points.
It will be a long (and expensive) job, but 15 yards of the layout have been changed during the last month.
This video shows my Southern Region sound-fitted stock at work at the end of the branch line. Locos are -
Hornby rebuilt West Country pacific 34045 'Ottery St. Mary' with sound bu Olivias Trains of Sheffield.
Hornby King Arthur 4-6-0 30799 'Sir Ironside', sound by Olivias Trains.
Hornby M7 0-4-4 tank and push-pull train with sound taken from a loco fitted with sound by Kytes of Essex.
Bachmann E4 0-6-2 radial tank 32556 with sound by Olivias Trains.
Bachmann N class 2-6-0 with sound by Olivias Trains.
Suttons Locomotive Works class 24 D5000 as it first ran on the Southern Region. Sound fitted from the supplier, an absolutely stunning model in looks, performance and sound.
Heljan class 33 diesel D6526 with sound by Olivias Trains.
