Maria and Teodoro Hammocks

Maria and Teodoro live in the town of Santa Rosa in the Mayan Yucatan in Mexico. The town of Santa Rosa was one of the first sustainable truism restoration projects established by the Fundación

Haciendas del Mundo Maya. Through this foundation, the hacienda of Santa Rosa was refurbished into a hotel, infrastructure was created within the town including a library and health center, and various artesian cooperatives were created as a means to create economic opportunities and self sustainability for the community and its inhabitants. As part of the cooperative Kichpan Coole, which means Beautiful Woman in Mayan, Maria and Teodoro have been dedicated to weaving hammocks for the last 5 years. Maria and Teodoro are 2 of the 4 artisans dedicated to hammock making in the Santa Rosa hammock workshop.

In order to make a Hammock, Maria and Teodoro must first determine which size hammock they would like to make and which type of yarn they would like to use. This determines the size and amount of time it will create to finish the hammock. Using a loom, Maria and Teodoro weave the hammocks by hand. The hammocks made out of the thicker yarn take about one week to complete. However, the white cotton hammocks made out of very fine cotton yarn called crochet take 4 months to make. These ones also require amount 4 boxes of yarn, or 48 spools of yarn to make. Since there are now less people working in the hammock workshop, Maria, and Teodoro often work into the night to finish their hammocks.

Sleeping in a Mayan Hammock

Decided to try sleeping in a Mayan hammock... I mean... when in Mexico! (although I have no idea how many Mexicans actually sleep in a hammock all night... until I did it, myself!)

Hamac Maya

How to put up your Mayan Hammock | Single Mom Travel #shorts

I've been sleeping in a hammock for a year and a half now, and there are two issues: getting the hammock easily out of the way (without it getting all tangled up) and cleaning the hammock.

Today, I'm going to show you how my part-time housekeeper wraps my hammock when she needs to sweep and mop because until now, I've just been swinging it out of the way, or gently laying it somewhere praying it doesn't get tangled!

Enjoy!
