We Tried Macedonian Food In Skopje's Best Restaurants

We weren't exactly sure what Macedonian food was before we travelled to #Skopje. But after spending a week in the beautiful capital of North #Macedonia, we can officially say that Macedonian food is delicious! It's very similar to other Balkan cuisines, but with a bit more spice from its distinct Turkish influence!

In this video, we do a #foodtour to 4 amazing restaurants in Skopje and then pick up a delicious cup of gelato. Here's the full list of all the restaurants we visited:
- Krin Bakery
- Kolektiv
- Destan
- Kaj Serdarot

If you want to learn more about what we ate, feel free to visit our blog post:

Eating the BEST FOOD in the BALKANS! (Skopje, Macedonia)

We spent two days trying the most incredible food in the Balkans in Skopje, North Macedonia! We tried some of the most famous Macedonian/Balkan food from Tavce Gravce to Selsko Meso!

Macedonian cuisine was something we didn't know much about but is now one of our favourites! It is almost a representation of the Balkans itself, with an incredible mix of influence from other areas in the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire, some Slavic, Italian influence and just the amazing freshness of the ingredients straight from the fertile land. This was one of our most incredible food tours!

We tried Macedonian (Street) Food in Lake Ohrid Macedonia (Travel Vlog & Food Tour 2021)

In this travel vlog our 2021 Macedonian lockdown continued. Instead of being in Bitola, we were in Lake Ohrid Macedonia. Everything (even supermarkets and pharmacies) closed down at 8 pm (20:00). ⁣⁣

Have you ever done a socially-distant scavenger hunt for food? Even if you don't want to be indoors sitting around people this is still a great way to find new food and have an exciting time. ⁣Because you can't lock down Mother Nature!

When we were in Ohrid Macedonia we jotted down a list of traditional Macedonian foods we wanted to try on a sticky note. Then we went out to find them!

We had a time-limit impossed on us since everything shut down at 8 pm (20:00); which made it more challenging.⁣

But we found a lot of options available via take-away.⁣

Not everything. But still a lot. And we were able to keep our social distance since we could not sit down inside restaurants.⁣

The dishes that we tried to find this week were:⁣

???? Shopska Salad: made from tomatoes, cucumbers, onion/scallions, raw or roasted peppers, sirene (white brine cheese), and parsley. (This is also Bulgaria's most famous and national salad). (????????????????'???? ????????????!)⁣

???? Mućkalica: stew made of barbecued meat and vegetables. Its name is derived from mućkati, meaning to shake, stir, mix. (Also a Serbian dish).⁣

???? Tavče gravče: This meal is beans, peppers, and seasoning baked and served in a traditional unglazed earthenware pot. It is considered the national dish of Macedonia. (????????????????'???? ????????????!)⁣

???? Ajvar: A condiment made principally from red bell peppers, eggplants, and oil. The relish became a popular side dish throughout Yugoslavia after World War II.⁣

???? Mekitsa (plural: Mekici): made of kneaded dough made with yogurt that is deep fried. (Also a traditional Bulgarian dish).⁣

???? Rakia (Cherry): One of the most popular spirits. Found all over the Balkans but in Macedonia they have options with a cherry flavor.⁣

American Eating Traditional Kafana Food In Skopje, Macedonia
Gostilnica Chardak is a very traditional restaurant on the bohemian street in Skopje. It is just a 10 minute walk from the city center square. We tried a lot of traditional Macedonian foods served in small tapas bowls called Makalo. We had Sarma, Tavce Gravce, Musaka, Polneti Piperki and Zelnik just to name a few of the dishes.

We entered North Macedonia - Day 14 / Balkan Motorcycle Tour 2023 - TransALP 650

On the 14th day of our motorcycle tour through the Balkans, June 2023... we left after 8 days through Albania, in North Macedonia. We hiked a bit through the Galicica National Park and took in the scenery towards Lake Ohrid...then we visited a unique place for us, the Bay Of The Bones Museum...a special location with thousands of year old houses. During the day, we followed some very smooth, winding roads that took us along the Black Drin river. Towards the end of the day we also got to see a bit of the Matka Canyon... to end the day in Skopje at a very nice accommodation... Studio K2, where we were surprised to hear that On Her Bike (Kinga) was already stayed there 6 times from 2018 until now.

#1EurochallengeForTheNewTransalp

My story as a motorcyclist started from my early childhood. Since I was only a few years old and my brother Atti (10 years older) would put me on the tank of his small 70cc motorcycle and let me pull the throttle...
Anyway, I think it was also genetic, since the time when my parents were traveled along of Romania in the 70`s, with their bike called Mobra 50cc.
At the age of 9 I acquired my first 49cc Yamaha Mint scooter.
One day, in 2005 my brother bought the 2001 TransALP 650, with 2145km. And from there his love story for TransALP but also mine, began!
At the age of 19, In October 2007 - I managed to complete the motorcycle driving school.
Just a few days later, the search began for my new motorcycle... which obviously had to be a TransALP! I had a maximum budget of 2000 Euros.
After further searches, we found in our city in Arad, Romania...
A TransALP 600cc, from 1992, green, with 64,500km, 1950 Euros.
The best life I could have started. From Oct 2007 to the end of 2010 I did about 50,000 km.
In that time the TransALPs bloomed like mushrooms after the rain. Somehow I became an unofficial TransALP Romania ambassador. We already had our gang and community of TransALPs. Many tours together followed, official annual meetings around the country.
After 2010, things changed, some personal, familiar problems appeared. And life took a completely different turn.
In all these years (2010-2016 aprox) this passion for motorcycle trips has dwindled drastically...

In 2020 I decided to resurrect my YouTube channel - Lutzifer Videographer. Channel established on March 1, 2008.
The years passed, and I had around 700 uploaded videos. Unfortunately, at that time I did not know how important the copyright of the songs is. 90% of my clips were either restricted or worse, blocked!
My decision was to delete everything and have it from scratch, on the same channel. But now it comes the time to make a new channel only for Motorcycle Travel and Exploring this beautiful world!
From 2020 I knew that going forward, this is my dream. To travel as much as I can by motorcycle. They are phasing them out with the neighboring countries and they are moving forward...step by step.
For the last 3 years I have been struggling to find a balance between Money - Free Time.
Even if we try to find the cheapest option, starting from accommodation, until two people eat a single portion of food, however, it costs.
Since I was a little kid, my dream was that one day to have a new motorcycle with which I can see the world. In addition to the fact that riding a motorcycle gives me personal satisfaction, I am even more happy when I can inspire others to do the same.
In the year 2021, after a long and complicated story, the whole family was left stranded and homeless. Moment when everyone went where they could, because life goes on. We're not complaining, some things are meant to happen to find a different path in life. Everything happens for a purpose!
And what I am about to tell you is not a begging, because from my point of view it is not about money, but about the power of people and the power of example.
After several clips, pictures, presentations, information about the new Honda TransALP 750 motorcycle appeared... I liked it a lot!
In 16 years of being a Honda TransALP owner and about 140,000 km traveled with two models (600/650), my heart still pulls towards the TransALP. Even though the market is full of many other similar models and brands.
The challenge is to reach 10,000 people who donate at least 1 Euro, as soon as possible!
The entire story is much longer...

Trying Macedonian Food | Skopje, North Macedonia

We only had three nights and two days in Skopje, so we had to make it worthwhile! Of course we made a beeline for Macedonian food. Priorities, right? In this video we tried Macedonian pizza, kebab, ivar, an assortment of grilled meats and veggies, baklava, and something that may have been called halga, according to a lady selling Angela Merkel baklava in a stall in the Old Bazaar. We're not entirely sure about the names of everything we ate, but it was all yummy, so no complaints!

???? ABOUT US

Hey y’all, we’re Alyssa & Noah, we’re Canadians who travel vlog & blog while we backpack around the world. We have a passion for travel, so much so that we have transitioned to a long-term travel lifestyle, but we’re broke post-grads so everything we do is on a budget!

Our travel journey started in 2018 when we took our first trip together. Immediately, we both caught the travel bug and we started planning our next trip on the flight home. From 2018-2020 we did the normal thing that university students / people with full-time jobs do, we took our 2-3 week vacations each year and we had the best times of our lives backpacking. Eventually, the short trips just weren’t enough for us and we really craved more of an immersive experience, to really live in different countries and fully experience the cultures. We both expressed this interest to travel more and we were so relieved that we felt the same. Ever since, travel has become an integral part of who we are individually and has come to play an important role in our relationship. Once we had both finished our university degrees, we decided it was finally time and we transitioned to a long-term travel lifestyle. As of September 2020, we have been backpacking through Europe, experiencing other cultures, staying in hostels & AirBnBs, and traveling on a budget.

This last year has been really difficult due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. When we first left Canada in 2020, we were told that everything would be okay and there were no problems with traveling to Italy. Of course, everything got a lot worse than any of us could ever imagine or expect. Unfortunately, we quit our jobs, gave up our apartment, and all of our belongings are in our parents’ house. So, it’s not an option for us to go back home to Canada, so we are in Europe trying to make the best of a bad situation. We are following health & safety regulations for each country, traveling as safely as we possibly can: wearing our masks all the time and constantly staying updated on travel advisories and travel updates.

Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about traveling and we want to share all our tips and trick as well as our ongoing backpacking adventures with you! We hope to inspire you to travel and help you to plan your next adventure!
As always, stay safe & happy travels!
