Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Beware of THIS in New Zealand!

Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.

They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.

This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.

If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.

There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.

Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob. from Wikipedia.

Life During Covid Lockdown 2020 in Northern Ireland (UK)

When the coronavirus in Northern Ireland arrived my parents had to be repatriated from a 3-month cruise whereas Fanfan’s flights had been cancelled from Thailand leaving her stranded in Bangkok. I had otherwise been housesitting for my parents in Bangor Northern Ireland which is where I would remain for the months ahead with quarantine and lockdown during the coronavirus in Northern Ireland.

The first weeks in lockdown were surreal with people-free streets and adjusting the new normal in Northern Ireland and the shakeup in society. Normal things like business, schooling, and socialising became a thing of the past. But I already knew the potential consequence as Fanfan had already lived through similar in Bangkok and Asia.

The Coronavirus was only really labelled a pandemic on 10th March by the World Health Organization (WHO) when outside China it had increased 13-fold in two weeks. Italy quickly becoming a source of concern for Europe. Then comes the stockpiling, the panic buying, and supermarket shelves were quickly emptied of things like big rolls and pasta. So we ended up relying on delivery from online shopping.

Otherwise no-one really cared about the Coronavirus in Northern Ireland until the first local deaths and when the ‘hazmat suits’ were seen spraying down shops in Victoria Square of the city centre. The first death in Belfast (19th March) was the real realisation that the pandemic was getting closer. Along with an announcement that up to 9000-14000 people could die in Northern Ireland.

So Northern Ireland goes into lockdown with measures for those going outside to social distance with only essential services allowed to open with the emergency closure of schools, businesses, travel, and non-emergency roles in society. A 1-hour escape was allowed for households to exercise but this just meant people congregated in public as if the holidays had come early and the virus was spread dramatically in Northern Ireland.

On the 23rd March Boris announced the lockdown in the UK and nationwide including Northern Ireland. People are told they may only leave home to exercise once a day and to travel to-and-from work only when it is “absolutely necessary”, and to only shop for essential items. So other than essential personnel/ key workers the nation was pretty much locked in their homes for the coming months.

Simple things became essential e.g. washing our hands, not touching our faces, avoiding contact with others, and disinfecting anything and everything that arrives to the house. Social distancing was applied outside at all times where we all had to be 2-metres apart. Businesses were furloughed and self-employed workers were provided with 80% income.

Video conferencing adopted into daily life and became the new normal for socializing and connection with family including weekly pub quizzes, regular chit chats, and daily aerobics (09:00 AM) led by Fanfan from Bangkok while the rest of us are holed up in Northern Ireland during the coronavirus pandemic. A year after the WHO officially recognized “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition they were now encouraging us all to stay in and play games.

The original lockdown was strange in many ways but there were many benefits. The roads were silent and the streets were empty and life was kind of serene. The sun was out the entire month and it was like summer for most of the time despite being Spring. The sun was shining, wildlife was appearing in unlikely places, and the nearby coasts were beautiful without the interruption of noisy crowds.

Emergency in Puerto Rico | What to expect in a Medical Emergency | Living in Puerto Rico

Medical emergencies happen, even in Paradise. Before you go to the emergency room or hospital in Puerto Rico, here are a few things you need to know.

Bring your own blankets, pillow, and bed sheets. The hospital is cold and they do not provide any supplies for comfort. Several friends recommend an emergency bag packed with pajamas, slippers, antibacterial wipes, and extra blankets.
Like any hospital stay, bring your own toothbrush and toiletries including shampoo and body wash.

Ambulance companies require payment before transport, accepting only cash or ATH Movil, no credit card payments. Ambulance fees vary based on your insurance and typical cost between $125 – 300.
Not all hospitals are equal. As I previously discussed in my Video going to the Doctor in Puerto Rico, heathcare is significantly lacking outside the major cities. Local emergencies are fine for minor injuries and stitches. For anything more severe, go to San Juan metro area, Caguas, Ponce, or Mayaguez hospitals for treatment.
Doctors will speak English, but do not expect nurses and health technicians to be bilingual. If you do not speak fluent Spanish, have a bilingual friend on standby for quick phone translations, if necessary.
Most importantly, be prepared to be your own advocate! There are not enough nurses and staff, so IV’s are not changed or checked on regularly. Possibly combined with language barrier, updates and regular communication is lacking compared to continental US medical care.

These are my personal observations and experiences and in no way should be taken as medical advice. I am not a Doctor or any kind of medical professional.
