Episode 49 - The Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle Disasters

On January 28, 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger blew up 73 seconds into its flight during liftoff, killing all seven members of the crew. The entire sequence of events was carried live on television as a shocked nation watched the spacecraft explode and break apart in front of their eyes. 17 years later, Columbia had finished its mission and was returning to earth when it burned up and disintegrated during its return to Earth. The cause was a large hole in the left wing. In both cases the true source of the problem was organizational not mechanical. The failure of parts without negative consequences was so common in the space shuttle program, there was a name for it, normalization of deviance.

???? LIVE: Russian Spacewalk 61 at the International Space Station (ISS)

AfarTV will be covering Russian Spacewalk 61 at the International Space Station to install a synthetic radar communications system, deploy a solar sail technology satellite, replace electrical connector patch panels, and photograph the multipurpose laboratory module’s external radiator. Spacewalk expected to begin approx. 1:55 p.m. EDT and last 7 hours.

Expedition 70 cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub will venture outside of the station’s Poisk module to install a synthetic radar communications system and release a nanosatellite to test solar sail technology. While outside the station, they also will inspect and photograph an external backup radiator on the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module that experienced a coolant leak on Oct. 9.

The spacewalk will be the 268th in support of space station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades. It will be the sixth for Kononenko, who will wear the Orlan spacesuit with red stripes and the first for Chub, who will wear the spacesuit with blue stripes.

Astronaut Christina Koch back on Earth after record-breaking 328 days in space Feb 6 2020 - Hoodie

Awesome video documentary on the ISS:

Source: CNN

NASA astronaut Christina Koch made the most of her first trip to the International Space Station by breaking the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and conducting the first all-female spacewalk with fellow NASA astronaut Jessica Meir.

We caught each other's eye and we knew that we were really honored with this opportunity to inspire so many, and just hearing our voices talk to Mission Control, knowing two female voices had never been on the loops, solving those problems together outside -- it was a really special feeling, Koch said of that first spacewalk, on October 18.
Koch returned to Earth early Thursday along with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov. The Soyuz spacecraft carrying the astronauts landed near Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan at 4:12 a.m. ET.
During her mission, Koch completed six spacewalks -- including another two with Meir -- and spent 42 hours and 15 minutes outside of the station.

Day Trip to Kemah ???? (FULL EPISODE) S4 E1

THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS on October 11, 2012. Some of the locations may have changed. Check for the most up-to-date information.

The town of Kemah may be small, but it’s just one tiny piece of the massive establishment that is Houston, and part of the Houston subset known as “Bay Area Houston”, consisting of Kemah, Clear Lake, La Porte, League City, Nassau Bay, Seabrook, and Webster. In truth, it’s very difficult to visit one without visiting the others. And why would you want to? As this area is packed with Daytripper goodness.

The largest attraction in the area is by far Space Center Houston, which is the official visitor’s center of NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The Space Center has been the brain center for space travel since the 1960s. You could literally spend all day here between the historic museum, space games, mission control tours and more. But one thing you definitely don’t want to miss is the Saturn IV rocket which is identical to the ones that took humans to the moon. TIP: you don’t have to buy a ticket to the Space Center to see the rocket, just ask for the NASA side gate that allows admittance to “Rocket Park.”

Ever wondered how the Longhorn became such a strong symbol for Texans? Head to this museum in League City to learn the story of how the Butlers, a ranching family, saved the Texas Longhorn from becoming just another bull in the 1920s. Hook Em.

As the sunsets on your incredible day, follow the lights to the Kemah Boardwalk. where you’ll find all the entertainment, great dining and good times you could hope for. Whether you’re riding the carousel, braving the roller coaster, listening to live music or eating at one of the many restaurants, this place is sure to please. Don’t miss the Friday fireworks.

Your trip to space will undoubtedly bring you back hungry, and Bay Area Houston has some of the best food on earth. For an amazing sandwich, take the astronaut’s lead and head to Hoagie Ranch, which is a favorite among the space walkers and has been serving up good eats for over 20 years. I recommend everything!

For a delicious burger look no further than Tookie’s, where they’re still serving up soda-hop worthy burgers and fries like they have been since they first opened in 1975. Don’t miss out on their famous Pelican Eggs — jalapenos that have been fried, stuffed with cheese and bacon and served with homemade ranch.

Unfortunately, Bubba’s Shrimp Palace has permanently closed since we filmed this episode.

To experience the natural side of the Bay, I recommend a visit to the Armand Bayou Nature Center, which boasts being one of the largest urban wilderness areas in the United States. Since being protected, the wildlife and plant life of Armand Bayou have exploded — this includes the gator population… So since swimming isn’t such a good idea, to explore the bayou you can paddle around it in a canoe or kayak. I recommend a guided pontoon ride and “Breakfast on the Bayou” with a resident naturist who can tell you all about the bayou.
