NOTE: When this video was filmed, I forgot to bring our RE-USABLE GROCERY BAGS with us to the store. We do our best to reduce our carbon footprint by recycling as much as we can, bringing re-usable bags to shop with and maintaining a robust compost for use in our yard/garden. Walmart, as everyone knows, is a huge corporation with stores around the world. Being from the USA, I have grown up with Walmart being part of every community I have lived in. However, it was not until I started spending time in Costa Rica, that I actually grew to appreciate Walmart. My experience with Walmart in the USA has not been great. In my experience, most of the USA locations are messy, disorganized and the employee's usually seem to be apathetic. Of course there have been a few exceptions to that and not every experience was bad.
However, here in Costa Rica, the stores are very clean, well organized and the employee's take pride in their work. This store is located in La Lima, Cartago, Costa Rica. I've never had a negative experience in a Costa Rica Walmart. So, I hope this little video shows that outside the USA, the shopping experience at a Walmart can be very different than in the States.
NOTE: THIS IS BASED ON MY GENERAL EXPERIENCES. I RECOGNIZE THAT NOT ALL WALMART STORES IN THE USA ARE BAD. NOR ARE ALL WALMART STORES IN COSTA RICA GREAT.

Shopping at a Costa Rica rebranded Walmart | BIG DIFFERENCE from USA!!
Today, we go shopping at Costa Rica's rebranding of Walmart known as Maxi Pali. We take you inside the store, do some shopping and show you some foods that are unique to Costa Rica that you wouldn't otherwise find in USA Walmart stores.
This Maxi Pali is located in Grecia, Costa Rica and is extremely popular amongst the locals. It offers the same Great Value prices and selection as most Walmarts as well as many other items that are specific to Costa Rica.

We are often asked how is the exchange rate determined in Costa Rica, or more specifically, what one dollar equals in Costa Rica. The money in Costa is the colon and the plural is colones. Imagine yourself on the most stunning beach in Costa Rica. You look out over a gorgeous bay dotted with tropical islands and feel the warmth of the sun caress your skin. You stroll along the shore and smell enticing aromas from restaurants you pass along the way. But they can wait for later. Manuel Antonio National Park is just minutes away and you’re looking forward to a day filled with waterfalls, nature walks and wildlife watching.
When you arrive back at your beachfront vacation rental home an award-winning staff greets you with friendly waves and smiles. Each day they make you feel pampered in unique and personalized ways. We can’t share our trade secrets here, so you’ll have to visit us and see for yourself.
Change Dollars and SIMM cards at San Jose Airport Costa Rica
Off the plane, down the escalator, see two booths. Money changing and SIMM cards.
We traveled with a press tour group. Pearlman changed dollars at the booth. Not the best rate of exchange. However, the tour group never stopped for money changing at a bank.
Actually, changing dollars for colones is not necessary in Costa Rica. The US dollar is the second currency of the country. The problem is the rate of exchange. The week we traveled, the official rate offered 570 colones to the dollar. When buying with dollars, we often received only 500, almost a 9% loss.
A greater loss came from buying at the expensive markets near the hotels. The tour operator placed us in luxury hotels. We remained in the tourist bubble the entire week in Costa Rica --
--- except when we took the City Tour through San Jose. In a bus, with a guide, rushing from site to site in the city. A good introduction to the city and the people.
All decent, very often kind and generous, never objecting to this foreigner with a video camera.
