Torrey Pines Gliderport - San Diego, California
Torrey Pines Gliderport played an interesting role in the aviation industry of Southern California. Beginning in 1930, this site was used for motorless flight. Gliders were car-towed off the beach parallel to a 350-cliff so they could fly in the lift created by the prevailing westerly wind at Torrey Pines. The nearly flat land of the mesa east of the cliff was used for launching and landing, providing a natural emergency runway. Many aviation pioneers flew at Torrey Pines. On February 24, 1930, Charles A. Lindbergh flew in the lift at Torrey Pines in a flight along the coast from Mt. Soledad to Del Mar, thereby establishing a claimed distance record.
Situated on the bluff above Black's Beach, the Torrey Pines Gliderport is the most historic aviation site in North America, and Southern California’s premiere location for paragliding, hang gliding, remote control models and sailplanes.

I went to the La Jolla Glider Port. Part 1 - A definite to do if you are on vacation in La Jolla San Diego. It was roughly $200. The video is a little extra. Totally worth it. One of the Highlights of my trip! Flew over the Razor Residence, La Jolla Farms, Torrey Pines. The Ocean and Blacks Beach looked amazing from up there. Enrique was my Pilot, a total pro. Paragliding is a unique sport that basically consists of jumping off a cliff with a parachute... Ok its not exactly that but its kind of that and its beautiful.

Our friend Kelli visited over the weekend and after watching the paraglider she decided to do a tandem ride. She LOVED it. Unlike skydiving where you are basically falling straight down the whole time, paragliding gives you the opportunity to ride the winds and she stayed in the air for about 20 minutes. Regular paragliders can stay in the air for as long as they wish.
The Torrey Pines Gliderport, is the most historic aviation site in North America, with nearly 100 years of flying history. It is Southern California’s premiere location for paragliding, hang gliding, remote control models and sailplanes. The Gliderport promoted paragliding during its infancy in the mid-1980s.
Today the Gliderport hosts several forms of aviation which, include radio controlled model aircraft, hang gliders, and paragliders. It may be the only site in the world where these aircraft all share the cliffs in harmony.
The great things is because its owned by the city anyone can stop by and just watch. The location offers beautiful views overlooking the pacific and the we have never failed to have a wonderful time watching the paragliders floating in the sky. Its a must see when visiting San Diego.

Must See When in San Diego - Torrey Pines Gliderport - 4K Drone Footage
Twenty minutes up the coast from San Diego, just south of Torrey Pines Golf Course, you will find the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Be sure to check it out...it's extremely interesting to watch the paragliders jump off the 350 foot cliff and ride the winds down to the beach. As you will see from the video, at times they get extremely close to the cliff walls. Enjoy...I did...no jumping just watching.
