St. Mark's Historic District is a historic district located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The district was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1969, and it was extended in 1984 to include two more buildings on East 10th Street. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and was expanded in 1985. The boundaries of the NRHP district and its expansion are now coterminous with those of the LPC.
St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery is the centerpiece of the district, but it extends beyond the church and its rectory to include much of Stuyvesant Street and some of East 10th Street, which contain a small collection of Italianate and Federal-style houses and residential buildings.

St. Mark's Place is considered a main cultural street for the East Village. Vehicular traffic runs east along both one-way streets. St. Mark's Place features a wide variety of retailers. Venerable institutions lining St. Mark's Place include Gem Spa and the St. Mark's Hotel. There are several open front markets that sell sunglasses, clothing and jewelry. In her 400-year history of St. Mark's Place (St. Marks Is Dead), Ada Calhoun called the street like superglue for fragmented identities and wrote that the street is not for people who have chosen their lives ... The East Village has been the home of to every kind of individual imaginable: Young, Old, Beatniks, punk rockers, hippies and even today’s yuppies. No matter what you do or where you come from, the East Village will open its doors to you.
The artistic essence that was intrinsic to the area when artists like Iggy Pop and Basquiat, took over is still palpable today, even as the neighborhood has become a friendlier, touristy area. Everywhere you go, art is present. Just a stroll down the street can reveal a number of murals.
Having a long history as a center for counterculture gave the area a certain cultural allure and edge that propelled its nightlife scene to one of the hottest in the city. As soon as you walk out of your apartment you’re bound to see people roaming the streets at all hours of the night and people queuing up for one of the many uniquely wild clubs in the area.
But it’s not all wild nights in the Village; residents are proud of the neighborhood and are deeply involved in its upkeep. Community gardens are a dime a dozen around the village, exemplifying the unity of its eclectic residents.

#NY #NYC #AvenueB is a north-south avenue located in the Alphabet City area of the #EastVillage neighborhood of #Manhattan, #NewYorkCity, east of #AvenueA and west of #AvenueC. It runs from #HoustonStreet to #14thStreet, where it continues into a loop road in #Stuyvesant Town, to be connected with #AvenueA. Below #HoustonStreet, #AvenueB continues as #ClintonStreet to #SouthStreet. It is the eastern border of #TompkinsSquarePark.
The street was created by the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 as one of 16 north-south streets specified as 100 feet (30 m) in width, including 12 numbered avenues and four designated by letter located east of #FirstAvenue.
On the #UpperEastSide, #AvenueB reappears as #EastEndAvenue; principally residential in character, it runs only from East #79thStreet to East #90thStreet through the #Yorkville neighborhood. It was called #AvenueB under the original Commissioners' Plan of 1811, but is no longer given that designation. Carl Schurz Park, the location of Gracie Mansion, is adjacent to the avenue at this point. In 1928, the #NewYorkCity Board of Estimate ruled that development below East #84thStreet was restricted to residential use.
Landmarks
* The Christodora House, a former women's #SettlementHouse and now a condominium, is located on #AvenueB at #9thStreet.
* The #CharlieParkerResidence at 151 #AvenueB between 9th and #10thStreets, where jazz musician Charlie Bird Parker lived from 1950 to 1954, is a #NewYorkCity landmark.
* #GracieMansion, a #NewYorkCity landmark and official residence of the mayor of #NewYorkCity, is located on East End Avenue at #88thStreet.
Transportation
Currently, there is no bus that travels on Avenue B. The M9 bus formerly used this street from East #HoustonStreet to #14thStreet. The M9 now travels on #AvenueC from #Houston to #23rdStreets. The M79 bus travels along East End Avenue from #80thStreet to #79thStreet.

* In 1922 Fannie Brice recorded The Sheik of Avenue B, a parody of The Sheik of Araby written by Harry Ruby and Bert Kalmar
* In Jonathan Larson's musical Rent, most of the characters live on #AvenueB and #11thStreet

EAST VILLAGE is a neighborhood on the East Side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It is roughly defined as the area east of the Bowery and Third Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south. The East Village contains three subsections: Alphabet City, in reference to the single-letter-named avenues that are located to the east of First Avenue ; Little Ukraine, near Second Avenue and 6th and 7th Streets; and the Bowery, located around the street of the same name.
UNION SQUARE is a historic intersection and surrounding neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City, located where Broadway and the former Bowery Road – now Fourth Avenue[4] – came together in the early 19th century. Its name denotes that here was the union of the two principal thoroughfares of the island. The current Union Square Park is bounded by 14th Street on the south, 17th Street on the north, and Union Square West and Union Square East to the west and east respectively. 17th Street links together Broadway and Park Avenue South on the north end of the park, while Union Square East connects Park Avenue South to Fourth Avenue and the continuation of Broadway on the park's south side.

Last weekend, I was in East Village, a popular and dynamic neighborhood in New York City, and I filmed it for you. East Village is known for its restaurants, bars, nightlife, music venues and beautiful community gardens.
We start from 4th Ave & E 8th St and walk towards Avenue A and Tompkins Square Park. Along the way, we will have a short stop at Ray's Candy Store and Tompkins Square Bagels. I walk NYC's East Village on a Friday Night via St. Mark's Place & Avenue A to Houston Street. There were many restaurants, bars, and people having a great time outside. The East Village is hanging in there, but much needs to be done before NYC returns to normal.
