La-Paz. Bolivia. 4K Walk

The administrative capital of Bolivia, located in the midwestern part of Bolivia. It is located 42 miles (68 km) southeast of Lake Titicaca.

Located 10,650-13,250 feet (3,250-4,100 m) above sea level, La Paz is the highest national capital in the world. La Paz, located 10,650-13,250 feet (3,250-4,100 m) above sea level, is the capital of the world's most highland nation. The city is located in a deep and wide valley formed by the La Paz River (Chokeup). Located 1,400 feet (430 m) below the Altiplano Plateau, the city is protected from the cold winds of the highlands, and since the late 20th century the population has grown and the city has expanded up the canyon walls to the edge of the Altiplano. La Paz was Bolivia's most populous city until the early 21st century, when it was overtaken by Santa Cruz.

La Paz is located in a valley in the Andes Mountains, a city bordered by clouds. The de facto capital of Bolivia, La Paz is the highest altitude capital in the world at 3,300-4,100 meters. La Paz, with its 19th-century churches, conquest-era artifact museums, rickety lookouts, and colorful markets, is a truly unique city. The witch market in the center of town sells amulets, potions and souvenirs used in Aymara ceremonies.

From abstract markets to bustling squares, La Paz is a colorful, chaotic and vibrant place. You can find historical landmarks and bargains to learn about Bolivian history.

You can learn more about Bolivia's traditions and development by taking a walking tour led by a local.

The city has many red brick buildings and hills that look like densely packed Lego pieces.

On a clear day you can see the snow-capped peaks of the impressive La Paz mountain range, and at night you will be dazzled by the hundreds of tiny lights that shine like stars on the highlands. It's both a beautiful and strange place that will never tire of delighting you!

La-Paz. Bolivia. 4K Walk

Founded in 1548 as Nuestra Señora de La Paz (“Our Lady of Peace”) by the conquistador Captain Alonso de Mendoza on the site of an Inca village, the city was renamed La Paz de Ayacucho in 1825, in commemoration of the last decisive battle in the wars of independence. The seat of national government was established there in 1898, but Sucre remains Bolivia’s constitutional capital, home to the country’s Supreme Court; La Paz is the seat of the executive and legislative branches. The Plaza Murillo, on the northeastern side of the river, is the heart of the city and site of the huge modern cathedral and government and legislative palaces. Although few colonial buildings survive, the narrow, steep, older streets, red-tile roofs, many skyscrapers, and highland Indians in colourful dress, with Nevado Illimani (21,004 feet [6,402 metres]) and other snowcapped peaks of the Cordillera Real in the background, give La Paz a distinctive atmosphere. La Paz is the site of the University of San Andrés (1830) and Bolivian Catholic University (1966). The National Museum of Art, a children’s museum, the Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, the National Museum of Archaeology, and the Mercado de Brujas (“Witches’ Market”), where herbs and other remedies used by the Aymara are sold, are among the city’s cultural assets. The city was hit by an earthquake in 1998 that killed hundreds of residents and destroyed many buildings.

Set at a staggering 3,600 metres above sea level, La Paz is likely to literally take your breath away. To help your body adjust to the altitude, get your hands on some coca tea and take it easy for a couple of days. To truly explore this crazy city, you’re going to need your strength!

La Paz’ markets are a great place to pick up South American souvenirs, though some rather wackier than others. The Witch’s market is thus named for all the weird and wonderful concoctions sold at the stalls there.

You can find a potion for every purpose, from ‘follow me’ dust to attract new partners, to ‘repel me’ powder to rid yourself of unwanted attention.

La Paz is fast becoming a must-visit destination on the South American gringo trail, partly due to its convenient location between many of Bolivia and Peru’s greatest sites. But this bustling metropolis at a breathtaking 11,600 feet (3,600 meters) above sea level has plenty of worthwhile attractions of its own. Let’s take a look at the top 20 things to see and do in what was recently declared one of the New Seven Wonder Cities of the world.

Santa Cruz, Bolivia. 4K Walk

Santa Cruz is the wealthiest and most populous city in Bolivia and a fascinating place to spend a few days getting to grips with the fascinating diversity of Bolivia. Compared with the thin air and chilly nights of La Paz and other high altitude Andean cities, the climate of Santa Cruz (at just 400 metres) is warm and tropical.

For one thing, it’s totally different to the rest of the country. So much so that you may experience a bout of culture shock when arriving from more traditional areas.

It’s far more modern and westernised than the majority of Bolivia, with rampant capitalism on full display. International chains that you don’t see anywhere else are extremely popular here, and almost an attraction in themselves. Starbucks, Burger King, KFC, and many more brands are all popular.

Additionally, you’ll notice there’s far less traditional dress on show in Santa Cruz. While you do still get the odd person wearing it, they’re the exception rather than in the majority.

Santa Cruz has grown rapidly since the late 20th century, largely because of the expansion of agriculture (notably soybeans, sugarcane, and rice) and petroleum and natural gas mining in the surrounding valleys. The city produces soybean oil, dairy and meat products, refined sugar, wood products, leather, and alcohol. Oil refining is also important. By the turn of the 21st century, the population of Santa Cruz had surpassed that of La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital, making Santa Cruz the country’s largest city.

Santa Cruz is growing hugely and the main square is losing a lot of its draw. Instead, the hub of the city is moving to Barrio Equipetrol, where fancy restaurants and bars are popping up catering to wealthy tourists and locals. As a result, rooms can be expensive and there is a lot of change in the backpacker hostel scene. These are some of the best options which look likely to stick around for a while:
