Founded in 1548 as Nuestra Señora de La Paz (“Our Lady of Peace”) by the conquistador Captain Alonso de Mendoza on the site of an Inca village, the city was renamed La Paz de Ayacucho in 1825, in commemoration of the last decisive battle in the wars of independence. The seat of national government was established there in 1898, but Sucre remains Bolivia’s constitutional capital, home to the country’s Supreme Court; La Paz is the seat of the executive and legislative branches. The population of La Paz has grown greatly since the 2000s. The growth is largely because the city has one of the highest standards of living and security in Mexico.
La Paz is served by the Manuel Márquez de León International Airport with flights to the most important cities of Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey. Airlines flying into La Paz include Aeroméxico Connect, Volaris and VivaAerobus. Two ferry services operate from the port of Pichilingue outside the city, connecting the Baja California peninsula to the mainland at Mazatlán and Topolobampo, near Los Mochis.
Eco-tourism is by far the most important source of tourism income in La Paz. Tourists also visit the city's balnearios. There are some 900 islands and inlets in the Gulf of California with 244 now under UNESCO protection as World Heritage Bio-Reserves and the Isla Espíritu Santo group, which borders the northeast portion of the Bay of La Paz, the primary tourist destination of the area.
Industries include silver mining, agriculture, fishing and pearls. Tourism is also an important source of employment for this coastal community.

Santa Cruz is the wealthiest and most populous city in Bolivia and a fascinating place to spend a few days getting to grips with the fascinating diversity of Bolivia. Compared with the thin air and chilly nights of La Paz and other high altitude Andean cities, the climate of Santa Cruz (at just 400 metres) is warm and tropical.
For one thing, it’s totally different to the rest of the country. So much so that you may experience a bout of culture shock when arriving from more traditional areas.
It’s far more modern and westernised than the majority of Bolivia, with rampant capitalism on full display. International chains that you don’t see anywhere else are extremely popular here, and almost an attraction in themselves. Starbucks, Burger King, KFC, and many more brands are all popular.
Additionally, you’ll notice there’s far less traditional dress on show in Santa Cruz. While you do still get the odd person wearing it, they’re the exception rather than in the majority.
Santa Cruz has grown rapidly since the late 20th century, largely because of the expansion of agriculture (notably soybeans, sugarcane, and rice) and petroleum and natural gas mining in the surrounding valleys. The city produces soybean oil, dairy and meat products, refined sugar, wood products, leather, and alcohol. Oil refining is also important. By the turn of the 21st century, the population of Santa Cruz had surpassed that of La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital, making Santa Cruz the country’s largest city.
Santa Cruz is growing hugely and the main square is losing a lot of its draw. Instead, the hub of the city is moving to Barrio Equipetrol, where fancy restaurants and bars are popping up catering to wealthy tourists and locals.
