Guyana Tourist Information
Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana. It is situated in Demerara-Mahaica, region 4, on the Atlantic Ocean coast, at the mouth of the Demerara River. It is nicknamed the Garden City of the Caribbean. It is the retail, administrative, and financial services center of the country, and the city accounts for a large portion of Guyana's GDP. The city recorded a population of 118,363 in the 2012 census.
All executive departments of Guyana's government are located in the city, including the Parliament Building, Guyana's Legislative Building, and the Court of Appeals, Guyana's highest judicial court. The State House (the official residence of the head of state), as well as the offices and residence of the head of government, are both located in the city. The CARICOM headquarters is also based in Georgetown.
Georgetown is also known for its British colonial architecture, including the tall painted-timber St. George's Cathedral and the iconic Stabroek Market.[1]

Michael and I walk through Stabroek Market, the heartbeat of Georgetown with a bustling shopping scene and the capital’s central bus station. I bought some super-cheap cookies-and-cream Oreos from a street vendor, which I would later realize had a “use by” date of 2015 and were horrible.

This is video 1 of 2. In September of 2017 I took a taxi from the Georgetown Guyana Airport to the city. The cost is 5,000 Guyanese dollars or $25 USD. The taxi only took about 45 minutes. The airport code is GEO named Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Stabroek Market, Ferry Pier, & Walking Thru Deserted Streets of Georgetown, Guyana
After Michael heads back to the hotel to relax, I take a second stroll through Stabroek Market, check out the ferry pier, and then head north. I buy a Guyana keychain from a street vendor. Another vendor tries to sell me knock-off clothes and jewelry. I continue strolling through deserted streets of Guyana’s capital on a Sunday afternoon.
