Athens is both the capital and the largest city of Greece. With its urban area's population numbering over three million, it is also the eighth largest urban area in the European Union.
Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. The city was named after the Greek goddess of war. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.
From 900 BCE onwards Athens was one of the main centres of trade and prosperity in the region. The leading position of Athens resulted from its central location in the Greek world, its secure stronghold on the Acropolis and its access to the sea, which gave it a natural advantage over it's rivals. Athens, together with Sparta, led a coalition of Greek states that repelled the Persians. The decades that followed became known as the Golden Age of Athenian democracy, during which time Athens became the leading city of Ancient Greece, with its cultural achievements laying the foundations for Western civilization.
By the end of Late Antiquity, Athens had declined due to attacks by migrating peoples. It was relatively prosperous during the Byzantine era and the Crusades, benefiting from Italian trade. In 1458 it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and entered a long period of decline.
Following the Greek War of Independence, Athens was chosen as the capital of the newly independent Greek state. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis, central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. The heritage of the Classical Era is still evident in the city, represented by ancient monuments and works of art, the most notable being the Parthenon.

Athens Greece's - Virtual Walking Tour in Plaka Near The Acropolis
Take a virtual walking tour through Athens Greece's amazing Plaka neighborhood, AKA The Neighborhood of the Gods Plaka is the oldest area of Athens. Having grown up around the Ancient Agora, Plaka is built directly over the residential streets of ancient Athens and has been continuously inhabited ever since. It is loosely bordered by the base of the Acropolis to the southeast and the Monastiraki and Syntagma neighborhoods to the west and east. Though Plaka is one of the most touristy areas, the neighborhood still bursts with charm with its cobblestone pedestrian streets, sidewalk cafes, and small shops. Most of Plaka is designated for pedestrian use only. Some of the best restaurants and bars in the city are located here. Sights include the Roman Agora, Tower of the Winds, Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Hadrian’s Arch, and the Jewish Museum of Greece. Plaka is served by Monastiraki station on metro lines 1 and 3, which go directly to the Piraeus ferry port and the Athens International Airport, respectively.
