Cruising is back and we are in Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas on the Celebrity Edge. We're going to give you a tour of what you’ll experience here when you walk around the port. This can help you to understand if you should pick an excursion or not. Stay tuned to find out what we thought and how you can prepare for your day in Charlotte Amalie.
For arrivals and departures at Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas cruise port it is nice there is a dock and no tendering needed. The dock is not long at all and the shore excursions pick up is right at the end. If you are looking to take a taxi you walk through the port shopping area and there is a taxi pick up on the other side. It only takes a few minutes to walk through the shopping area. In terms of masks you are supposed to wear them when inside and outside at the port.
In terms of port atmosphere there is a shopping area at the Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas port. The shopping area has all the typical shops and essentials you see in a port. There are a lot of souvenir shops that are all locally owned and a camera store with crucial items you may have forgotten ashore. There are a couple bars and restaurants you can stop to have a drink, enjoy the views and take a mask break. Also if you have forgotten anything there is a small pharmacy as well. The port was not very busy as most people getting off the ship did excursions and there were some others like us who walked around the port or took local transportation. There is a lot of shade which is nice if you are waiting for people in the shops or have done a bit of shopping and are waiting for your excursion. There are some renovations in the back so there will be even more shops and shade.
A question a lot of people ask is what things to do in Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas? We just wanted to mention a couple things that are close to the port to do. If you are vaccinated most cruise lines allow you to explore the port on your own. Be sure to check the rules for each port with your cruise line. With Celebrity we were able to explore on our own. We are focusing on what is right at the port but wanted to highlight a few options that aren't far away. There are some beautiful beaches you can head to including Coki Beach, Magens Bay, Sapphire Beach and Secret Harbour Beach. The oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands is Fort Christian and from there you have gorgeous views of Charlotte Amalie Harbor. If you are looking for something on the more extreme side you might want to check out Tree Limin’ Xtreme Zipline. I have never done a zip line before but the views do look amazing. We know there are a lot more experiences to do. If you are choosing to go on your own, be sure to check it is open beforehand. Some companies in Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas have not opened yet or have adjusted hours.

May 2022: Today we are walking Main Street and Back Street in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI. Cruise passengers are back but there is no vessel in today.
Here, they can typically shop at many of the duty free stores and enjoy the colonial architecture. The Main Street revitalization projects are complete, a good use of the Covid-enforced downtime.

Drive along beautiful Charlotte Amalie newly remodeled waterfront on Veteran's Drive. From the Weymouth Rhymer Hwy astonishing vistas of Havensight marina, passing by the Lockhart Gardens Shopping Center, Schneider Regional Hospital Medical Center, CAHS, entrance to Bluebeard's Castle road, Fort Christian, Emancipation Gardens, ferry terminal downtown and ending the tour at the Seaplane Terminal. The video was filmed early morning on June 29, 2021.

St Thomas's reputation as a paradise island appears well deserved. Famed for some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, visitors are spoiled for choice with activities and things to do. But if you are cruiser on a tight budget can you still enjoy this paradise? Absiolutely ! In our day we found a fabulous beach, explored a remote island in the bay, witnessed a street party, explored the historical sites in Charlotte Amelie and witnessed the best sunset of our holiday, spending less than $35 pp during our day ashore.
Its a great place to explore and a place to go back to.

This is how to walk from the St. Thomas cruise ship port to downtown Charlotte Amalie. Charlotte Amalie is the best place to buy duty-free watches, jewelry and souvenirs in St. Thomas. It's a safe and easy walk from the cruise ship terminal in St. Thomas. Please note that all shops in Charlotte Amalie close by 6 PM during the week and sometimes at 2 PM on weekends. Avoid Charlotte Amalie after the shops close, as it could be mildly unsafe. I've explored both St. Thomas and St. John tip-to-tip and have never encountered any issues with crime though. During our free time in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI, we decided to walk around near the cruise ship dock and this is what we saw on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. We were here as part of Viking Cruises West Indies cruise on Viking Sea which overall was an amazing cruise, although I think in general I like Europe more than the Caribbean.
Driving from Charlotte Amalie to Yacht Haven Grande St. Thomas USVI

Within this video, I drive from downtown Charlotte Amalie where all of the nice duty-free stores are alongside the waterfront to where all of the more expensive clothing stores, etc. are in Yacht Haven Grande, directly beside the St. Thomas cruise ship port. You'll notice the to cruise ships sign on the right side of the road. St. Thomas has created a very nice and very safe waterfront sidewalk between the cruise ship port and shops downtown in Charlotte Amalie. If you're concerned about walking from the cruise ship port to the duty-free shops in Charlotte Amalie, don't be! It's a very safe walk and there should be an abundance of other tourists walking the sidewalk too! My advice is to avoid Charlotte Amalie after the shops close though. I think that the Charlotte Amalie shops usually close around 6 PM during the week and 2 PM on the weekends. The store schedule is dictated by the cruise ships that are in port. Ask your cruise line if you are unsure about the Charlotte Amalie store hours and they should be able to tell you. Have a good day and thanks for watching! This is the cruise ship port in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. If you cruise to St. Thomas, this is likely where your cruise ship will dock. Unlike other popular cruise ship ports, St. Thomas cruise ship port is VERY SAFE. There is high-end duty-free shopping and restaurants right at the dock. There is also some of the best duty-free shopping in the world a short walk along a waterfront sidewalk from the cruise ship port to Charlotte Amalie. Everything from excellent diamonds and other gems to high-end Swiss watches can be purchased for an incredible discount in Charlotte Amalie. My best advice is to make St. Thomas part of your cruise vacation. We've been to the western Caribbean area (Cozumel, etc.) and were not as impressed. St. Thomas is safe, clean and beautiful. We've never felt uncomfortable and have explored most all of St. Thomas and St. John by car. My best advice is to avoid Charlotte Amalie after the shops close though, as there is nothing in Charlotte Amalie from a tourist's perspective after the shops close. Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas is the best duty-free shopping in the world for watches and jewelry. The current duty-free allowance per US citizen is $1600 per person and I don't think that loose diamonds, loose tanzanite, etc. are counted against that allowance....always check with customs to be sure =) Almost every watch brand including Patek Philippe, Panerai, Vacheron Constantine, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger LeCoultre, Rolex, Breitling, Omega, Ulysse Nardin and MUCH MORE can purchased very nicely discounted in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. Ajante Jewelers is the best jewelry store in the world! It is located in Drake's Passage in Charlotte Amalie. They have loose diamonds and loose tanzanite. They also have a vast array of diamonds and other stones that are already mounted. If you're not yet engaged, I'd recommend flying to St. Thomas and buying the engagement diamond and/or ring there. You'll likely score a much better engagement ring and even with the airfare and hotel, it'll likely cost less than it would in the United States. Ajante Jewelers are great people! Post Covid St. Thomas - Walking Charlotte Amalie
October 2020: Today we are walking Main Street and Back Street in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI. Some shops are open but it is very quiet. This is one of the more popular areas for tourists that visit the island via cruise ship. Here, they can typically shop at many of the duty free stores and enjoy the colonial architecture, but there have been no calls at our ports for several months. We expect activity to potentially resume in December or the first part of 2021.
There is quite a bit of construction work. Some of the revitalization was scheduled prior to the pandemic, but it was a good use of the down-time anyway.

A visit to Charlotte Amalie on the island of St Thomas, the capital of the US Virgin Islands and a popular port of call for Caribbean cruise ships ????
The US Virgin Islands are an American territory and Charlotte Amalie is the busiest port in the country. It's also the biggest city in the Virgin Islands.
Charlotte Amalie, USVI was a port of call on our Caribbean cruise aboard the Oasis of the Seas. Lots of cruise lines other than @RoyalCaribbean stop in the US Virgin Islands.
Most ships stop at Crown Bay. It's about 20 minute walk to the centre of the city or about $5 in a cab. We enjoyed the walk along the waterfront and it was a great way to see the city.
Because the US Virgin Islands is a territory of the United States, it uses US dollars. English is the main language
We walked from the cruise port to the Island View Skyride to Paradise Point. We spent some time at the Paradise Point Lookout taking in the great view of Charlotte Amalie. The Skyride was fun and something a little different to do that we've not seen in other Caribbean ports.
We also visited Fort Christian which was built by the Danish when they owned the islands as the Danish West Indies. Denmark isn't as well known for it's colonialism as some of the other European countries so it was interesting to find out a bit about that.
We really enjoyed our visit to Charlotte Amalie, USVI and our walk around the city. The Skyride to Paradise Point was particularly enjoyable. We're definitely looking forward to returning some day. ⚓️
